Or sensed an uplifting wave of tenderness carried on a soft breeze? Maybe you’ve momentarily smelled a very strong flower scent where there were no flowers present, or seen a waft of smoke appear and disappear in an instant. Have you ever heard soft music that no one else could hear? If none of the above examples sounds familiar to you, don’t be discouraged. I believe that we all have been nudged by Spirit in one way or another. The signals are so extraordinary and short-lived we usually discard these fleeting episodes as figments of our imagination. They are ignored or forgotten by most of us. All of these apparitions are signs of angelic and spirit guide presence intended for us personally. They’re meant to intrigue, inspire and get our attention, nudging us to expand our awareness of a broader reality. Yes, your spirit helpers are real, and they are waiting for you to acknowledge them so they can begin actively participating in your daily activities and your life journey. Without exception, God has blessed every one of us with a guardian angel and spirit guide to support us in so many ways with our journey on earth. Our spirit guidance will assist us in heading in the direction best suited to our individual nature, life goals and karmic challenges. As we become receptive to their involvement our lives are sparked with the magic of Spirit and our growth is greatly accelerated. Angels are Miracle Workers, Magicians and Nurturers of the Heart. Angels are the most radiant and highest vibrating beings in God’s creation and they are the purest expression of God’s love. They are like God’s hands: loving messengers assigned to us 7/24 to help orchestrate the big and small miracles in our lives when we ask for help. Angels are masters of: * Love * Protection * Healing * Inspiration * Creativity We must ask for their assistance and involvement in our lives. Because the laws of “free will” dictate our right to make all choices for ourselves Angels can only intervene on our behalf if we ask them for help. (The exception to this rule is that they will intervene to save our life if we are confronted by death before our time). Angels love to be called on for assistance in all matters - it is their purpose for being. Blessing us with loving assistance is their means of evolvement. We actually deprive them of fully expressing their purpose when we exclude them from our lives. Angels love to assist us through our struggles and to share our joy as our requests are fulfilled. Angels can help us with every aspect of our lives. Ask for their assistance with; healing for yourself and loved ones, personal and professional inspiration, or guidance with a special venture you’re starting. You can request them to assist you with passing tests, cooking a delicious meal and finding a perfect gift for a loved one. Ask them for guidance and help with any of the major and minor challenges in your life. Remember that it is their purpose and their joy to help you. Allow yourself to accept their active participation in your life. It’s free, it’s easy and it’s an incredible blessing! Spirit Guides are Masters of Human Life. Spirit guides provide similar service and teachings as the avatars that have incarnated on earth, such as Buddha, Krishna and Sai Baba. They are our personal enlightened masters who guide us in the areas of life that help us to evolve spiritually and move us closer to fulfilling our soul’s purpose. Your guides resonate to your soul purpose and are specialized in the area in which you most need to accomplish growth in at this time. At certain points in your life the primary guide will temporarily step aside to enable another guide to provide assistance in an area of his/her particular expertise. Your main guide resumes counsel once this special need has been fulfilled. There may be periods when you feel a lack of connection to your spirit counsel. This may occur when you are shifting to a new spirit guide or when you feel the need of some time for assimilation and independence. Trust that your spirit guide is there in the wings ready to resume active guidance when you’re ready. As we progress spiritually we graduate, in a sense, to new guides. This is wonderful feedback from the universe. The change of guides is a very positive sign of our achievement and that of our previous guide. It is a feather in their cap as well as our own. As with the angels, our spirit guides evolve by assisting us to grow spiritually. It is their service to us as well as to our creator. Spirit guides are masters of universal law and spiritual evolvement in the material world (earth). They possess the knowledge and wisdom necessary to guide us on our path towards ultimate soul enlightenment. Spirit guides lead us to experiences of growth that enable us to overcome: * Pride * Selfishness * Fear * Attachment * Addictions * False Beliefs They direct us towards unconditional love, communion with our Creator and fulfillment of our life purpose. Our spirit guides are not meant to answer all of our questions but to steer us to the answers within ourselves. They help us to get in touch with our own inner wisdom, which is the connection to our higher, all-knowing self. Some spiritual teachers call this “the still small voice within.” I relate to it as the subtle knowing of divine truth achieved through the connection with my Higher Self within. The Higher Self is at one with God and is our most important source of divine guidance. Spirit guides also help create the synchronistic events that delight and charm us. Since spirit guides have lived incarnate lives on earth they are more knowledgeable about the workings of the material world and human consciousness. They work hand in hand with the angels, assisting in the physical orchestration of purposeful “chance” meetings and bringing about the small and large miracles in our lives. ~ o ~ Many people gravitate to either angels or spirit guides as their primary source of guidance. It doesn’t matter which we choose to start with – we each should do what feels right for us individually. I began with spirit guides because they first approached me in a powerful way that got my attention. Eventually, I became educated about angels and have greatly benefited from working with them as well as spirit guides. They are wonderfully effective teammates. Not everyone will gravitate to having alliances with spirit guides. The notion may be perceived as too far “out there.” The topic of angels is widespread and is supported by religions around the world. The introduction of spirit guides is more of a “new age thing” and can be off-putting to people who have no understanding of their existence or purpose. I believe that spirit guides have always existed alongside angels and have forever been mistaken as angels. This would be difficult to prove and it truly doesn’t matter one way or another. When we ask for angel assistance our spirit guides are also authorized to assist us, whether or not we accept the reality of their existence. Since light beings in Spirit work together on our behalf, we will rarely know where our divine assistance comes from. Angels and spirit guides will always assist us with our requests if it is for our highest good and the highest good of everyone concerned. An unfulfilled request is a signal that what we have asked for is not for the highest good – we may be headed in the wrong direction or not yet ready for what we have requested. It may also be a matter of timing and the window of opportunity just hasn’t opened yet. We must learn to trust that God’s messengers are doing everything they can to assist us to achieve what is needed right now and in the unfolding future. Our friends in spirit will discourage our adoration and over- dependence on their advice. Angels and spirit guides are in service only to empower us and to strengthen our abilities to create wonderfully for ourselves.

  • “Spiritist Mediumship As Historical Mediation: African-American Pasts
Journal of Religion in Africa 41 (2011) 330-365 brill.nl/jra Spiritist Mediumship as Historical Mediation: African-American Pasts, Black Ancestral Presence, and Afro-Cuban Religions Elizabeth Pérez, Ph.D. Dartmouth College, Department of Religion 305 !ornton Hall, Hanover, NH 03755, USA [email protected] Abstract !e scholarship on Afro-Atlantic religions has tended to downplay the importance of Kardecist Espiritismo. In this article I explore the performance of Spiritist rituals among Black North American practitioners of Afro-Cuban religions, and examine its vital role in the development of their religious subjectivity. Drawing on several years of ethnographic research in a Chicago-based Lucumí community, I argue that through Spiritist ceremonies, African-American participants engaged in memory work and other transformative modes of collective historiographical praxis. I contend that by inserting gospel songs, church hymns, and spirituals into the musical reper- toire of misas espirituales, my interlocutors introduced a new group of beings into an existing category of ethnically differentiated ‘spirit guides’. Whether embodied in ritual contexts or cul- tivated privately through household altars, these spirits not only personify the ancestral dead; I demonstrate that they also mediate between African-American historical experience and the contemporary practice of Yorùbá- and Kongo-inspired religions. Keywords African Diaspora, Black North American religion, historiography, Santería, Espiritismo, spirit possession Pirates of the Afro-Caribbean World Among practitioners of Afro-Cuban religions such as Palo Monte and Lucumí, popularly called Santería, Spiritist ceremonies are frequently celebrated. !is has been the case wherever these traditions’ distinct yet interrelated classes of spirits—including Kongo mpungus and Yorùbá orishas—have gained a foot- hold, particularly in global urban centers.

  • The Problem of Seth's Origin: a Case Study of the Trance-Possession Mediumship of Jane Roberts Paul Cunningham Rivier College
Running head: THE PROBLEM OF SETH'S ORIGIN The Problem of Seth's Origin: A Case Study of the Trance-Possession Mediumship of Jane Roberts Paul Cunningham Rivier College Author Note Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Paul Cunningham, Department of Psychology, Rivier College, Nashua, NH 03055. E-mail: [email protected] Running head: THE PROBLEM OF SETH'S ORIGIN 2 Abstract Jane Roberts channeled the purported discarnate entity called "Seth" from 1963 through 1984. The purposes of this paper are to (a) discuss the question of whether the content of a mediumistic communication can aid in determining the source of that communication, (b) address a gap in the literature by presenting an outer history of the trance-possession mediumship of Jane Roberts, and (c) examine eight explanations for Seth's origin in light of the published evidence of the case, including fraud, cryptomnesia, hypnotic self-suggestion, incipient schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, high creativity, psi functioning, basic source Aspect, and energy personality essence. Either Seth is or is not a production of Jane Roberts' psyche. In either case, we are led to the possibility that human personality may have a greater reality and greater awareness than is generally supposed. Keywords: case study, mediums, mediumship, possession, trance, survival of consciousness, discarnate communication, content analysis. Running head: THE PROBLEM OF SETH'S ORIGIN 3 The Problem of Seth's Origin: A Case Study of the Trance-Possession Mediumship of Jane Roberts On December 8, 1963 an entity that called himself Seth emerged under the auspices of a ouija board to take possession of the body of a woman named Jane Roberts of Elmira, New York with the expressed purpose of dictating information about the nature of reality beyond the five senses in a trance-possession mediumship that lasted for 21 years.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from die document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete, 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • A Model Explaining Brazilian Spiritist Surgeries and Other Unusual, Religious-Based Healingsi
Report A MODEL EXPLAINING BRAZILIAN SPIRITIST SURGERIES AND OTHER UNUSUAL, RELIGIOUS-BASED HEALINGSI Sidney M. Greenfield, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explain unusual surgeries performed withour antisepsis or anesthesia in which patients bleed but minimally when cut. experience little if any pain, do nor develop infections or other post-surgical complications and furthermore, recover. Operations performed by three Brazilian Spiritists healer-mediums are described. The explanation of the Kardecist-Spiritists, whose belief system informs the surgeries and other healings, is presented and examined. The author then seeks an objective, scientific explanation for the phenomena in recent developments in new fields within biomedicine and in psychosomatic healing. Ernest. L. Rossi's model (as developed in The Psychology oJlvfind-Body Healing) which focuses on information flow as a way to resolve the mind-body problem, is taken as a point of departure. Rossi proposes that hypnosis can be used therapeutically to introduce information ar the level of the psyche that is then transduced ro the endocrine system, the immune system, etc., activating them ro contribute to the healing process. Observing that hypnosis, as undersrood and used in the individualistic west, usually requires someone to induce a patient so that healing and therapy may be initiated (by suggestion), the aurhor then turns to the comparative record of anthropology to show that individuals regularly enter into trance states during religious rituals where they also are exposed to alternative real ities in which there are forces and beings believed able to both cause and cure illness. This information, it is hypothesized, is transmitted symbolically to the psyches of individuals in both words and images.

Because I am interested in what emic explanations reveal about scholarly categories and methods, a dialogic approach in which I consult practitioners’ explanations to test the appropriateness of academic categories is central to this work. Thus, this study is grounded in an ethnographic study of the Voodoo Spiritual Temple, which was founded and is operated by Priestess Miriam Chamani, a bishop in the Spiritual Churches. The Spiritual Churches first emerged in the early twentieth century under the leadership of Mother Leafy Anderson. Voodoo, Pentecostalism, Spiritualism, and Roman Catholicism have been acknowledged as their primary tributary traditions. This study examines the material culture, such as statues and mojo bags, at the Voodoo Spiritual Temple as it reflects and reveals aspects of Temple attendees’ world views. In particular, material culture begins to illuminate attendees’ understandings of non-human beings, such as Spirit and spirits of the dead, as they are embodied in a variety of ways. Conceptions of Spirit and spirits are revealed to be interconnected with views on physical and spiritual well-being.

  • Prophetess of the Spirits: Mother Leaf Anderson and the Black Spiritual Churches of New Orleans
SIXTEEN Prophetess of the Spirits Mother Leaf Anderson and the Black Spiritual Churches of New Orleans Yvonne Chireau Mother Leaf Anderson, a thirty-two-year-old missionary, preacher, and proph etess, went to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 19 ig to establish a church that would reflect her distinctive vision of sacred reality. In 1927, when she died, she left a legacy of women’s leadership and spiritual innovation that had transformed the religious landscape of the city for both blacks and whites. Anderson, a woman of African and Native American ancestry, founded a religion that would carry her signature into the present day. Leaf Anderson’s role in the formation of the New Orleans black Spiritual churches reveals the unusual and complex cultural configurations that she embodied in both her life and her ministry. The ways that she redefined gender and religious empower ment for women in the Spiritual tradition influenced all who came after her. This essay considers gender and race as intersecting categories in its analy sis of the churches established by Anderson, a network of congregations that synthesized elements of Protestantism, Catholicism, nineteenth-century American spiritualism, and neo-African religions. My focus on African Amer ican women serves as a counterbalance to interpretations of religious his tory that fail to account for race, class, and gender as determinants of female subjectivity. The contrasting social and cultural realities for black and white women underscore the differences in the religious options that both groups have historically sought and chosen. The black Spiritual movement is one product of those differences.

  • Mediums, Spirits, and Spooks in the Rocky Mountains: a Brief History of Spiritualism in Colorado 1860-1950
Mediums, Spirits, and Spooks in the Rocky Mountains: A Brief History of Spiritualism in Colorado 1860-1950. “Scarcely another cultural phenomenon affected as many people or stimulated as much interest as did Spiritualism in the ten years before the Civil War and, for that matter, throughout the subsequent decades of the nineteenth century…. ‘in 1856, it seemed more likely that Spiritualism would become the religion of America than in 156 that Christianity would become the religion of the Roman Empire, or in 756 that Mohammedanism would be that of the Arabian population.’”1 Introduction During the second half of the nineteenth-century, the country was swept off of its feet by spiritualistic phenomena. Broadly defined, Spiritualism is the belief that the dead survive as spirits and can communicate with the living through the use of mediums or people with a special otherworldly perceptiveness or sensitivity that enables them to detect the presence of and communicate with spirits. Although documented happenings of otherworldly communication and paranormal phenomena have occurred around the world since the beginnings of written history, it was not until the year 1848, with the emergence of organized Spiritualism in the United States, that communication between the living and dead necessitated the assistance of a medium.2 The development of this Modern Spiritualism (the version that requires a medium) began in 1848 with the Fox sisters in Hydesville, New York. After the “Hydesville episode” of 1848, Spiritualism rapidly spread throughout the rest of the United States, starting a very popular trend that appealed to politicians of great import, quintessential authors, the elite of society, and the under classes alike.
