1:18 Autoart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The Lamborghini Murcielago was built between 2001 and 2010. It was the successor to the Diablo and served as the flagship model for the brand. Murcielago is Spanish for “bat” and was also the name of Navarra fighting bull. This was a key model for Lamborghini as it was the first all-new car produced under the stewardship of new owners Audi – it was actually their first new design in 10 years! This LP640 coupe was revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006 and was officially called “Murcielago LP640”, with the LP standing for the engine’s orientation (Longitudinale Posteriore) and the 640 denoting the power output. Displacement was increased from 6.2 to 6.5 litres and a 0-60mph time around the 3.2 second mark with a top speed of 211mph included in this piece of automotive art and aural drama. This model hails from AUTOart’s Performance range and is presented here in Arancio Atlas (orange to you and me). As you’d expect from AUTOart, the paintjob is lovely and reflects the light nice and cleanly. There is a bit of glue visble at the bottom of oneof the rear air vents, however. The overall shape and look of the model is just amazing – you’d expect nothing less from a Lamborghini and AUTOart have faithfully reproduced it in every way possible. It is such a low-slung beast, I’m not sure how anyone can actually fit inside! I know some people aren’t fans of model makers including number plates on their models, but at least here they are proper solid pieces – not just stickers that will eventually peel off. I’ve always found the rear three-quarters of the real car a bit awkward, as well as the rear wheels slightly and AUTOart are so good at their job, that this model follows suit. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 1 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 2 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 3 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 4 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 5 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review A Lamborghini just wouldn’t be a Lamborghini without the scissor doors – how cool do they look?!?!?! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 6 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review In my opinion, wheels, brakes and grilles are a few of the main things that can make or break a scale replica. This model is a tour de force and a veritable feast of grilles, grilles and MORE GRILLES – they are everywhere and done so well!! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 7 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 8 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 9 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Other features such as the asymmetrical intakes along the sides and the wing mirrors look really good as well. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 10 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 11 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 12 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The deployable side vents that pop up when the engine requires more cooling are all present and correct here with included perforated grilles – I couldn’t manage to get them to stay open on my model, so if anyone knows how to do this please let me know! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 13 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 14 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The hinge work on this model leaves nothing to be desired. The bonnet opens on a set of struts, while the rear engine hatch features the same struts as well as solid metal hinges (the good type). www.themodelcarcritic.com | 15 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 16 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The headlights are very well done, although mine have very small amounts of glue residue around the edges – only really noticeable in close up shots. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 17 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The tail lights are a sight to behold. They were upgraded to LED units on the LP640 and just look at the detail in them. Another AUTOart trait. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 18 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 19 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Oh yeah….more grilles!! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 20 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 21 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The centre exit exhausts don’t look too shabby either! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 22 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Remember how I said wheels and brakes are key success factors of a scale model? AUTOart have delivered yet again on this front. My only gripe is the black calipers against the black rims – they should have been matched with the body colour perhaps? The lettering on the calipers is crystal clear, however, and the brake discs look like real carbon-ceramic! www.themodelcarcritic.com | 23 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 24 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 25 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The petrol cap looks like it opens – it doesn’t. I’m also not sure what those two little circles are above and below it. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 26 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The front badge on my particular model has peeled around the edges slightly, but you can clearly see the raging bull and Lamborghini lettering is there. The rear photoetched badge sits atop even more perforated grille…. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 27 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 28 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Onto the engine bay and this is where the 6.5 litre V12 beast lives below the louvred glass engine cover. The engine and ancilliaries all look present and correct, but a bit of extra colour wouldn’t have gone amiss – the black and silver make it look a bit bland. The carbon surrounds and yet even more perforated grille serve to elevate it, however. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 29 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 30 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 31 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 32 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 33 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Turning our attention to the interior, I’d say it’s close to perfection. The carbon embossed kickplates are a lovely touch, while the carbon fibre trim and diamond-stitched alcantara everywhere are fabulous. I was annoyed at first that the raging bull wasn’t present on the steering wheel, but when I Googled for interior shots of the real car, it is merely embossed in black, so you can’t really see it anyway. There are real fabric seatbelts with photoetched buckles as well. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 34 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 35 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 36 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 37 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review The diamond-stitched effect continues onto the scissor doorcards, seats (with Lamborghini embossed headrests) and bulkhead. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 38 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 39 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review Dials behind the steering wheel are pretty clear, if not 100% legible. The buttons to the left of the steering wheel are nice and crisp, however, and the column-mounted paddles are good to see. There’s also a nice bit of carbon trim around the instrument binnacle. www.themodelcarcritic.com | 40 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review www.themodelcarcritic.com | 41 1:18 AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Review This is a phenomenal effort from AUTOart on the whole – and to think this was only from their “Performance” range of models! I have no doubt this would probably sit in their Signature range alongside the Aventador if it was made nowadays. This is the kind of model they should be producing nowadays, instead of the sometimes shoddy composite models like the AMG GT S. Hope you enjoyed this review….. • Forged Composite®” Technology for the Suspension Arms of the Sesto Elemento
LAMBORGHINI “FORGED COMPOSITE®” TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SUSPENSION ARMS OF THE SESTO ELEMENTO Paolo Feraboli1, Federico Gasco, Bonnie Wade Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory Dept. of Aeronautics & Astronautics, University of Washington Seattle, WA (USA) Steve Maier, Roger Kwan Innovative Composite Engineering White Salmon, WA (USA) Attilio Masini, Luciano DeOto, Maurizio Reggiani Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composites Research Center Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A Sant’Agata Bolognese (ITA) ABSTRACT Recent composite technology research and development efforts have focused on new out- of-autoclave material forms, and automated processes that can markedly increase production efficiencies. In a fashion similar to the aviation industry, manufacturers of high performance automobiles are moving away from costly manufacturing processes based on manual lay-up of prepreg and autoclave cure. Since 2007, the research and development efforts at Lamborghini have aimed at reducing composite part cost and increasing production rate. This effort has culminated in the development of Forged Composite® technology, which is an advanced compression molding technique that utilizes carbon fiber sheet molding compounds. This publication constitutes the first public technical disclosure of both Forged Composite® and of the control arms manufactured using this technology. The process, which uses high pressures but conventional temperatures, is used to manufacture parts with complex geometries and subject to combined loadings, which were typically manufactured as aluminum and titanium forgings. This technology was used to manufacture the inner monocoque and the suspension control arms of the Sesto Elemento, a multi-million dollar composite technology demonstrator vehicle unveiled in September 2010 at the Paris Autoshow. This paper focuses on the development of the suspension control arms, which aim at a 30% weight reduction, as well as a cost and cycle time reduction with respect to the baseline forged aluminum construction.

This paper highlights the fundamental contributions of advanced composites in the production of the body panels and integrated chassis components for the Murcièlago and Murcièlago Roadster. Keywords: composites; carbon fibre; manufacturing methods; class A surface; environmental effects; adhesive bonding. • 50 Years on the Red Carpet So Sensual, Intriguing and Elegant As
50 years on the red carpet So sensual, intriguing and elegant as to steal the scene from one of the most fascinating catwomen ever played by Anne Hathaway; no, we’re not talking about an actor or an actress, but about the silver Aventador LP 700-4 in which Bruce Wayne (played by Christian Bale) drives to Gotham City when he decides to come out of his self-imposed seclusion, after an absence of eight years, and return to play the role of Batman in “The dark knight rises”. The car chosen by Wayne for his return could hardly have been anything other than a Lamborghini, because the Gotham City millionaire is one of the greatest collectors in film history of the Italian cars made by the House of the Bull. In “Batman Begins”, the Batmobile co-starred with a Murciélago, and in 2008’s “Dark Knight”, with a Murciélago LP 640. Could it be a coincidence that the word Murciélago, as well as being the name of a famous, and famously fierce, fighting bull bred by Joaquin del Val de Navarra, also means “bat” in Spanish? Lamborghini is a true star of the red carpet. For the world premiere of “Mission Impossible III” (2006), the leading actors in the film arrived in 10 Lamborghinis, including a yellow and red Gallardo. But then of course an orange version of the supercar built by the Sant’Agata Bolognese manufacturer appeared as a member of the cast in the film. Perhaps the decision to arrive in Lamborghinis was taken to cheer up the stunning Maggie Q, who in a scene in the film is asked by Tom Cruise to blow up the supercar.
