Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

In the 2006 season, the 38-year-old Audi factory driver is shouldering as Kommunikation 85045 Ingolstadt many as two racing commitments: In the Audi A4 DTM, he contests Europe’s www.audi.com most popular touring car series which is scheduled to start at Hockenheim on April 9th and, in addition, he is part of Audi’s ambitious diesel project in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The differences between these two racing disciplines notwithstanding, there is one thing they have in common: Tom Kristensen is considered one of the hot favourites in both. As many as seven times Kristensen has won the world’s most famous endurance race in France, now being the record holder. After his victory in the Audi R10 TDI at Sebring (Florida) this weekend, the new diesel sportscar’s debut, the Dane will be flying on Sunday night directly from Miami to London, where the official DTM tests at Brands Hatch are scheduled to start on Monday. There, Kristensen will be taking the wheel of his new Audi A4 DTM – bearing the internal designation “R12 plus” – for the first time. First Test of the Audi R8 Against Opposition Roll Outs at Nürburgring
27 April 1999 First test of the Audi R8 against opposition Next Sunday’s pre-qualifying for the Le Mans 24 Hours is the first major test for the Audi R8 against major opposition. Six weeks before the race, Audi Sport aims to qualify the four car line-up for the traditional race at La Sarthe in June. „The pre-qualifying is the first opportunity to test the car on the Le Mans track“, explains Audi‘s Head of Sport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. „This is extremely meaningful for us since we are newcomers.“ Roll outs at Nürburgring and Silverstone Each car has a time limit of just six hours to pre-qualify on Sunday hence the preparations are meticulous. Dr Ullrich: „The cars have been stripped down and re-built completely after the recent tests.“ In order to be prepared perfectly, both teams will do a roll out to check every part before they go to Le Mans. Audi Sport Team Joest will shake down the two open- topped R8Rs at the Nürburgring while Audi Sport UK will test the enclosed R8C at Silverstone. Line-ups will be defined on Saturday night The teams will qualify on Sunday in two separate groups. Only after the final scrutineering on Saturday night will organisers define which cars will start on Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon. Both Audi Teams will attempt to pre-qualify on the 2 May. „Our goal is to get familiar with the track in the best possible way“, explains Dr Ullrich. During pre-qualifying, 10 of the 12 Audi drivers will be present. -

But there were loads of other activities surrounding Audi at the Nürburgring as well. Many prominent guests came to visit Audi at the Nürburgring. The German national ladies skiing team around Maria Riesch and Katy Hölzl and their chief coach Mathias Berthold had the chance of a close-up DTM experience including a peak behind the scenes during a pit lane tour. Real-world and TV judge Alexander Hold, actor Sam Eisenstein (“Alles was zählt”) and TV presenter Kai Pflaume were guests too, as were footballer Lukas Sinkiewicz from Bayer 04 Leverkusen and actor Norbert Heisterkamp (“Alles Atze”, “7 Zwerge”). At the “World of Race Cars” fans were treated to a “meeting of generations” featuring two very special Audi models. The Audi R10 TDI, which has already become a legend with 17 victories clinched in 31 racing events, met a true-to- the-original copy of the Auto Union Type D with a double-compressor engine. While Le Mans winner Dindo Capello was at the wheel of the R10 TDI, Frank Stippler piloted the copy of the 485-hp pre-war racing car at its German début. -

Audi has set standards with its ultra-lightweight design in the area of the sports prototypes. In 15 years of development, the motorsport engineers have achieved best marks. Since 1999, ultra-lightweight design has been playing a central role with Audi’s Le Mans prototypes (LMP). Materials, such as CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic), harbor major potential for optimizing weight. “In the space of 15 years, we’ve also achieved major progress in the area of ultra- lightweight design,” stresses Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “Audi’s LMP sports cars have continually become lighter, stiffer, safer in crashes and more efficient. There is hardly another motorsport discipline in which the creativity of the engineers is rewarded as highly as it is with the Le Mans prototypes. Whether in terms of engineering design details or materials: many of the ultra-lightweight ideas from motorsport have the potential of positively influencing the development of Audi’s production models. Reducing the weight of the cars is the key to our successful future – in motorsport and in production.” Even in its first LMP sports car – the 1999 R8R – Audi used a carbon fiber monocoque.
