Diplomacy and Life on Georgia's Boundary Line Caecilia J. Van Peski 1
Diplomacy and life on Georgia’s boundary line Caecilia J. van Peski 1 Five days of war During the night of 7-8 August 2008, Georgia launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reconquer the territory. Georgia claimed that it was responding to attacks on its peacekeepers and villages in South Ossetia, and that Russia was moving non-peacekeeping units into the country (Asmus, 2010).2 The Georgian attack caused casualties among Russian peacekeepers, who resisted the assault along with Ossetian militia. In the early hours of War, the Georgian army successfully captured most of Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. Russia reacted by deploying units of the Russian 58th Army and Russian Airborne Troops in South Ossetia, launching air strikes against Georgian forces in South Ossetia and military and logistical targets in Georgia proper. Russia claimed that these actions were a necessary humanitarian intervention and peace enforcement. Subsequently, Russian and Ossetian troops battled Georgian forces throughout South Ossetia for five days, with the heaviest fighting taking place in Tskhinvali. On August 9, Russian naval forces blockaded part of the Georgian coast and landed marines on the Abkhaz coast. The Georgian Navy attempted to intervene, but were defeated in a naval skirmish. Russian and Abkhaz forces then opened a second front by attacking the Kodori Gorge, held by Georgia.3 1 Caecilia J. van Peski is the founder of Van Peski Consult (www.vanpeskiconsult.org) and works as a policy officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2010, she was deployed to the Republic of Georgia as Deputy Team Leader Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance within the European Union Monitoring Mission, EUMM. -
AACTA Announces China | Australia Film Forum
Media Release For immediate release AACTA Announces China | Australia Film Forum Tickets have today gone on sale for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA)’s China | Australia Film Forum, to be held on Tuesday 4 December at Doltone House in Sydney. The latest event to be held as part of AACTA’s Asia International Engagement Program, the Forum aims to further encourage collaboration between filmmakers in Australia and those of our close neighbour, China. As the Chinese film industry continues to grow at pace, so does the Australian film industry’s relationship with it. Earlier this year, two of the biggest China-Australia co-productions yet were announced, THE WHISTLEBLOWER and LEGEND OF SUN AND MOON. The two films follow in the footsteps of other recent co-productions such as AT LAST (2018), THE LONGEST SHOT (2018), GUARDIANS OF THE TOMB (2018), THE DRAGON PEARL (2011) and AFI and AACTA nominated films 33 POSTCARDS (2011) and CHILDREN OF THE SILK ROAD (2008). The past few years has also seen a growing number of Chinese filmmakers choosing to film in Australia, including BLEEDING STEEL (2017) starring Jackie Chan and web series OLD BOY (2018), which has received over 230 million views online and debuted in the number one spot on Hunan Television. AACTA’s China | Australia Film Forum will bring together some of the most important figures working in the Chinese film industry today, including: China-based director and member of AACTA’s 2018 Best Asian Film Grand Jury Renny Harlin (THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, SKIPTRACE, THE LEGEND OF THE ANCIENT SWORD, DIE HARD 2 and the upcoming BODIES AT REST); Chinese screenwriter and AACTA Best Asian Film Grand Juror Liu Yi, whose film WOLF WARRIOR II is the highest grossing film in Chinese history, earning AUD $1.2 billion at the box office worldwide; China-based producer Ellen Eliasoph (SHADOW, MOUNTAIN CRY). -

CHAPTER I Historicizing 5 Days of War the Phrase the Historicity Of
CHAPTER I Historicizing 5 Days of War The phrase the historicity of text and textuality of history has been popular among new historicists ever since the 1960s. They examine the dialectical relationship between history and literature. They interpret a literary text as a product and a producer of history. History cannot be divorced from textuality. Neither the text can be divorced from historicity, nor the text from contexts. Louis A. Montrose, a new historicist, in "Introduction: Professing the Renaissance: The poetics and Politics of Culture" underscores a reciprocal relationship between historicity and literature. While examining the dynamic dialogue between literature and history he appears with a phrase, "the historicity of texts and textuality of history". He further clarifies, "By the historicity of texts, I mean to suggest the cultural specificity, the social embedment, of all modes of writing" (20). Montrose suggests that history itself is a text and a literary text is bound up in its historical context. History is not something absolute and unchanging. It is a dynamic process of making, breaking and remaking of a text and its meanings. There is no one true version of history, just as there is no one true interpretation of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. When historicists write history, they do not just re-state facts and figures but interpret these data. Historians compose history in the same way an author composes a literary text. Hence, literature is historically determined: 1 By the textuality of history, I mean to suggest, firstly, -
