BEHP 0719 T RENÉE GLYNNE Transcript British Entertainment History Project – Interview No. 719 26th January 2018 INTERVIEWEE – RENÉE ALMA GLYNNE INTERVIEWER – DARROL BLAKE Transcriber – Linda Hall-Shaw DARROL BLAKE: So, can you tell me your name and where you were born and when. RENÉE GLYNNE: I am Renée Alma Glynne, nee Renée Galler. I was born in Hackney in 1926 which was the year of The General Strike, of very nice parents, whose parents were living in Russia at the time of the pogroms and left in, say, 1890, something like that. Went from there, accidentally, to New York – I think they were meant to come here. They stayed in New York and then they did come to London and respectively had my parents. So sometimes I think I am Russian, but I grew up absolutely being an English child with no foreign languages around me or anything foreign. (TIME 01.09) DARROL BLAKE: And where was that? RENÉE GLYNNE: It began … I was born in Hackney overlooking Victoria Park. Very beautiful. Went down the drain later and is now up the drain. DARROL BLAKE: Did you have any ambitions when you were a young girl? Did you always want to go into the film business? RENÉE GLYNNE: Entertainment business, behind stage. I really wanted to be, probably, in the wardrobe of theatre or an ASM [Assistant Stage Manager]. And I knew that it was going to be theatre and I hadn’t really … I went to cinemas and saw films, but I never yearned to do movies. DARROL BLAKE: Was that in your family at all? (TIME 02.00) RENÉE GLYNNE: My two uncles were in very well-known bands. -

Lyubov Orlova: Stalinism’S Shining Star,’ Senses of Cinema, Issue 23: the Female Actor, December 2002
Dina Iordanova, ‘Lyubov Orlova: Stalinism’s Shining Star,’ Senses of Cinema, Issue 23: The Female Actor, December 2002. Available: https://www.sensesofcinema.com/2002/the-female-actor/orlova/ Lyubov Orlova: Stalinism’s Shining Star Dina Iordanova Issue 23 A Lyubov Orlova filmography appears at the bottom of this article. A misguided assumption about Soviet cinema, which still persists, is that it’s a national cinema mostly comprised of depressing war dramas in which popular genres were neglected and even suppressed. This is certainly not the picture of Soviet cinema I remember when, 1 growing up in 1960s Bulgaria, I could enjoy a fair share of popular films, like the Soviet action-adventure Neulovimyye mstiteli/The Elusive Avengers (1966) or Yuri Nikulin’s superb comedies, all playing in theatres alongside the comedies of Louis de Funès or Raj Kapoor’s ever-popular weepy Awara/The Vagabond (1951). A highlight was Eldar Ryazanov’s musical, Karnavalnaya noch/Carnival Night (1956), with Lyudmila Gurchenko’s unforgettable dancing and singing. Made several years before I was even born, Carnival Night was so popular that by the time I started watching movies it was still regularly playing in theatres as well as being shown on television. Here, a buoyant and beautiful Lydmila Gurchenko leads a group of amateur actors to undermine the plans of the Culture Ministry and its boring leadership in order to turn a New Year’s Eve celebration into an exciting vibrant extravaganza, with confetti, sparklers and crackers. It was only later, in my teenage years when I started visiting the Sofia Cinémathèque, that I realized how Carnival Night in many aspects replicated Grigoriy Aleksandrov’s musical extravaganzas of the 1930s. -
Diplomacy and Life on Georgia's Boundary Line Caecilia J. Van Peski 1
Diplomacy and life on Georgia’s boundary line Caecilia J. van Peski 1 Five days of war During the night of 7-8 August 2008, Georgia launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reconquer the territory. Georgia claimed that it was responding to attacks on its peacekeepers and villages in South Ossetia, and that Russia was moving non-peacekeeping units into the country (Asmus, 2010).2 The Georgian attack caused casualties among Russian peacekeepers, who resisted the assault along with Ossetian militia. In the early hours of War, the Georgian army successfully captured most of Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. Russia reacted by deploying units of the Russian 58th Army and Russian Airborne Troops in South Ossetia, launching air strikes against Georgian forces in South Ossetia and military and logistical targets in Georgia proper. Russia claimed that these actions were a necessary humanitarian intervention and peace enforcement. Subsequently, Russian and Ossetian troops battled Georgian forces throughout South Ossetia for five days, with the heaviest fighting taking place in Tskhinvali. On August 9, Russian naval forces blockaded part of the Georgian coast and landed marines on the Abkhaz coast. The Georgian Navy attempted to intervene, but were defeated in a naval skirmish. Russian and Abkhaz forces then opened a second front by attacking the Kodori Gorge, held by Georgia.3 1 Caecilia J. van Peski is the founder of Van Peski Consult (www.vanpeskiconsult.org) and works as a policy officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2010, she was deployed to the Republic of Georgia as Deputy Team Leader Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance within the European Union Monitoring Mission, EUMM. -
