St Benedict
DIARY (continued)
In the Lectionary, we commemorate St Benedict, Abbot on 11 July. Benedict was born in the Italian town of Nursia in Umbria in 480 AD. His contribution to the development of western monasticism and so to European life and culture cannot be underestimated. He founded 12 communities of monks at Subiaco just east of Rome before moving to Monte Cassino which is between Rome and Naples. An account of
his life is found in Gregory the Great’s Dialogues
(particularly the second book). But it was not so much the
events of his life which were to be Benedict’s lasting legacy –
it was his Rule of Life.

The Rule of St Benedict was largely drawn from the writings of John Cassian, a Romanian priest who founded an Egyptian style monastery in the tradition of the Desert Fathers in Marseilles, France in 415 AD. St Benedict
incorporated many of John Cassian’s principles into his Rule
and encouraged his monks to read the works of Cassian.
Sunday 21 July
FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
In residence: The Precentor
8.00 Holy Communion (Lady Chapel) 10.00 MATTINS
Southern Cathedrals Festival
Verse: Decani
Benedict’s Rule was written in 516 AD. It comprises 73
chapters and its subject matter falls into 2 categories: the spiritual (how to live a life in imitation of Christ) and the administrative (how to run a harmonious and well organised religious community). There is much that is instructive for the smooth running of any Christian community, including a
Cathedral!
Responses: Leighton Noble in B minor Elgar - The Spirit of the Lord Preacher: The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield, Precentor
- Psalm: 81: 1-8
- Hymn: 427
11.00 SUNG EUCHARIST

WORSHIP
AND MUSIC
In addition, Benedict set out the essence of a specifically monastic life: Ora et Labore – to pray and to work. The order of those two words is important as for Benedict it is prayer which needs to undergird everything. The practical
outcome of Benedict’s vision for monastic communities is
that they should pray for 8 hours, sleep for 8 hours and work for 8 hours (and work could include manual work or spiritual reading and writing). It is all about living a stable and balanced life, again an instructive insight for modern life
which can often lack the ‘stabilitas’ and balance that Benedict
advocates.
Preacher: The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean
- Psalm: 15

424 (omit *), CP 453, 308, 272

St Benedict contributed more than anyone else to the rise of monasticism in Europe and the majority of monks and nuns whether they are Benedictine or Cistercian follow his Rule. Benedict was made Patron Protector of Europe in 1964 by Pope Paul VI and Co-Patron of Europe (with St Cyril and St Methodius) by Pope John Paul II in 1980. Benedict died at Monte Cassino on 21 March 547 AD. Before 1970 his feast day was always on 21 March with a memorial on 11 July. This was changed in 1970 because the March feast day invariably fell during Lent. So after 1970 the memorial became the main
feast day and 11 July could be celebrated without any Lenten
restrictions.
