DIARY (continued) St Benedict

Saturday 20 July Southern Cathedrals Festival In the Lectionary, we commemorate St Benedict, Abbot on Margaret of Antioch, martyr, 4th century 11 July. Benedict was born in the Italian town of Nursia in 8.00 Mattins (said) Umbria in 480 AD. His contribution to the development of 11.00 FESTIVAL EUCHARIST sung by the combined boy choristers western monasticism and so to European life and culture cannot be underestimated. He founded 12 communities of and lay clerks and Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester Cathedrals at Subiaco just east of Rome before moving to Monte Victoria - Missa Laetatus Sum Cassino which is between Rome and Naples. An account of Victoria - O Domine Jesu Christe his life is found in Gregory the Great’s Dialogues Preacher: The Revd Ronald Corp OBE (particularly the second book). But it was not so much the Hymns: 197, 492, CP 450, events of his life which were to be Benedict’s lasting legacy – CP 618 it was his Rule of Life. 5.00 Evening Prayer (said, Bishop’s Chapel) 6.00 SCF Concert 3: J. S. Bach - St John Passion The Rule of St Benedict was largely drawn from the writings of John Cassian, a Romanian priest who founded an Sunday 21 July Southern Cathedrals Festival Egyptian style in the tradition of the Desert FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Fathers in Marseilles, France in 415 AD. St Benedict In residence: The Precentor Verse: Decani incorporated many of John Cassian’s principles into his Rule 8.00 Holy Communion (Lady Chapel) and encouraged his monks to read the works of Cassian.

10.00 MATTINS Benedict’s Rule was written in 516 AD. It comprises 73 Responses: Leighton chapters and its subject matter falls into 2 categories: the Noble in B minor spiritual (how to live a life in imitation of Christ) and the Elgar - The Spirit of the Lord administrative (how to run a harmonious and well organised Preacher: The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield, Precentor religious community). There is much that is instructive for Psalm: 81: 1-8 Hymn: 427 the smooth running of any Christian community, including a 11.00 SUNG EUCHARIST Cathedral! Mozart - Spatzenmesse WORSHIP Mozart - Ave verum corpus In addition, Benedict set out the essence of a specifically Preacher: The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean monastic life: Ora et Labore – to pray and to work. The Psalm: 15 Hymns: 440 (omit *), order of those two words is important as for Benedict it is AND MUSIC 424 (omit *), CP 453, 308, prayer which needs to undergird everything. The practical 272 outcome of Benedict’s vision for monastic communities is 3.30 EVENSONG with Dismissal of Choristers that they should pray for 8 hours, sleep for 8 hours and work Responses: Leighton for 8 hours (and work could include manual work or spiritual 7 - 21 July 2019 reading and writing). It is all about living a stable and Howells - Collegium Regale balanced life, again an instructive insight for modern life Wesley - Blessed be the God and Father which can often lack the ‘stabilitas’ and balance that Benedict Harris - Bring us, O Lord God advocates. Psalm: 82 Hymns: 394, 339 St Benedict contributed more than anyone else to the rise of www.chichestercathedral.org.uk monasticism in Europe and the majority of monks and whether they are Benedictine or Cistercian follow his Rule. Benedict was made Patron Protector of Europe in 1964 by Follow us on Twitter @ChiCathedral Paul VI and Co-Patron of Europe (with St Cyril and St Methodius) by Pope John Paul II in 1980. Benedict died at Monte Cassino on 21 March 547 AD. Before 1970 his feast day was always on 21 March with a memorial on 11 July. This was changed in 1970 because the March feast day invariably fell during Lent. So after 1970 the memorial became the main feast day and 11 July could be celebrated without any Lenten restrictions.
