In some cases, we have fol- lowed the old format you are familiar with (i.e Background, In Depth, The Word in from generation to generation. Our Lives, Test Yourself, Discussion Questions, etc). In others a write-up on the topic has been presented. As much as possible, the biblical basis of the topic has been given in the write-up. It is expected that the exposition will be well studied to form the basis of the Discussion.

We encourage every literate member of the Church to have their own copy of the WBL and study the exposition at home, so that there can be a meaningful discussion of the topic at the Bible Class Meeting. The writers have researched into the topics and presented you with a wealth of information. Therefore let us make very good use of these materials.

It is our hope that this new approach will help deepen your knowledge of the Bible, especially as it relates to the every day issues that confront us. We welcome any suggestions that will help us improve on this new approach to our Christian Education.

God bless you for using the Weekly Bible Lessons.

be used with a short exhortation.

Prayers may be varied in the following and other ways:  Each person prays for one item  Each person prays for the person on his/her left or right  Conversational prayer in which persons utter one-sentence- for a specified item  Prayer may be made for specific things on certain days. For example: Monday Pray for relations, Tuesday: Pray for use of Weekly Bible Lessons ………… Saturday: Thank God for his mercies during the week  Hold hands whilst praying

Involving as many people as possible enhances participation and interest. Family members may conduct the devotions, take turns to read scriptures, pray, ask/answer questions depending on their age and ability.

Christian fathers are the spiritual heads of their homes. The conduct of the family devotions is thus their responsibility. They may however, delegate responsibility to wives or other family members.

Since the Christian faith is to be lived out in the practicalities of daily life, other media different from the above may be used for worship and teaching of spirituality. Christian music on tape or video, Christian films, Christian books and articles, as well as teachable moments (periods when certain principles are most appropriately taught) may all be used for the purpose.

Other activities that may be undertaken by families to foster faith include:  Family Conferences – the family discusses together issues affecting members and the family as a whole, with a Christian perspective.  Celebrations of birthdays and other special family events, with thankfulness to God.  Working together to undertake a project that glorifies the name of God, such as giving sacrificially towards a cause, or helping someone in need.

One Malachi 2:13-16 way of enabling this is through the conduct of family devotions.

REVIEW OF PREVIOUS STUDIES In the Health and Sanitation Section of the Jan-June 2008 issue of the Weekly Bible Lessons, we discussed topics that are closely related to this week’s topic.

We would like to repeat some sections of the June 8, 2008 study entitled ‘Cleanliness and Godliness’ for emphasis, because we believe these are very important issues that affect our daily lifes.

BACKGROUND The need to keep our environment clean has become a major topic for discussion in the media. Many communities undertake clean-up campaigns now and then and the television sometimes highlights these events to serve as an example for others to emulate.

In spite of these efforts, our streets are littered with plastic waste and our gutters are choked with garbage, some of the containers of which contain human excreta. The situation in our cities and towns is so desperate that an observer suggested that the country's quest to become a middle-income nation may not be achieved if good

The wealth that God promised his people was defined as follows: 1. VERSE 10: When you have eaten and are satisfied. To be wealthy means to have enough to eat and not worry about where the next meal is going to come from. 2. VERSE 12: You build fine houses and settle down. As mentioned in the introduction, one of the basic human needs is housing. Sometimes people live in houses and other types of accommodation that dehumanize them. Young people in our churches who migrate to the cities must be encouraged to join the churches in the urban centres and be active in these urban churches. The church must be a family to them.

2. The Church’s mission in the city i. The church as a family: Our urban churches must open their eyes to the needs of the jobless youth and even adults among us. A close look at our urban churches will reveal that people from certain parts of the country who migrate join particular congregations. This is because they want to find family away from home. The church stands in the place of the parents of these young ones and we must not fail them. ii. Job Creation: In the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Mt. 20:1- 16), Jesus shows how one man went out to seek for the unemployed and gave them jobs to do. The Bible enjoins us to “do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Gal. 6:10) It is therefore important that those among us who have the ability to create jobs do so and favour the unemployed among us. iii. Advocacy: In one of the early lessons of this edition of WBL, (Week 45 104 EXPOSITION The city has always acted as a magnet to attract people. All manner of people flock into the cities. The social checks and balances which are often present in the closely knit communities in the villages or rural areas are lost in the urban areas, because not many understand each other.

2. Shattered Hopes in the City a. The Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11-32): The parable of the prodigal son as told by Jesus shows how one’s hope for success in the city can be dashed. Jesus said, “…the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living”. For this young man, probably a Jew, to have “longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating…” could be described as the worst thing that could happen to a Jew. But even that could not be made available to him. His hopes for successful living had been dashed in the city. b. The Story of Naomi and her family (Ru 1:1-7): Naomi’s family travelled from Bethlehem, “to live for a while in the country of Moab.” They ran away from the famine in Judah, hoping for a more prosperous life in a foreign country. INTRODUCTION Paul, in his first letter to the Thessalonians, urged them to shun idleness: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody” (1Thessalonians 4:11, 12). Apparently, they did not adhere to his admonition. So Paul devoted some part of his second letter to this problem.

Some solve this problem by migrating with its attendant ill effects. Lack of skills contributes to unemployment. This week our focus is on how to apply the adage “necessity is the mother of invention” to our lives. Our discussion will be centered on how to avoid giving excuses and be creative or innovative in the face of the hardship, poverty and other related problems that confront us.

EXPOSITION The creative ability of God is expressed in the Bible as follows: “By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew” (Proverbs 3:19-20). God has put this creative ability in man as expressed in the following passage: “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures” (Pr 24:3-4).
