All Hail the Crown was very good, but Malfunkshun was sorely lacking. Kevin Wood has a tentency to go off on anthem-esque guitar solos Offline that don't really fit (think Jack Joined: 2010-04-16 Black from School of Rock) and, the lead singer they had blew BALLS (didn't know the words to 90% of the songs). Maybe my expectations were too high but I was quite disappointed in the show. The Malfunkshun documentry they played before the show, on the other hand, was GREAT and I got to meet Momma Love Rock (Kevin and Andrew's mom). __________________ I've got an idea of something we can do with a Top gun. I really dig it. the end is a little meh (the cover of "Man of Golden Words" is great) and I do agree some of the guitar solos are over the top, but the songs pretty well rock. and you can't beat the andy wood lyrics.     The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I complessi più amati dai ragazzi americani in quegli anni sono veloci, aggressive ed arrabbiate hardcore punk band come i Black Flag, i Minor Threat o i Dead Kennedys. Quella stessa sera, ad aprire il loro concerto c’è una band locale composta da musicisti che dopo pochi anni diventeranno personaggi chiave del sound di Seattle. Si tratta dei Green River. Fanno parte dei Green River: il cantante Mark Arm, il chitarrista Steve Turner, il batterista Alex Vincent, il bassista Jeff Ament e l’altro chitarrista, Stone Gossard. Il futuro chitarrista ritmico dei Pearl Jam nasce il 20 Luglio 1966 a Seattle. Da ragazzo vive sempre a Seattle insieme ai genitori, due avvocati di successo, e alle due sorelle, Shelley e Star. I suoi genitori, democratici convinti, lo mandano ad una scuola superiore alternativa e multiculturale, la Northwest School, dove le lezioni di storia includono discussioni prolungate sul coinvolgimento degli Stati Uniti negli assassinii politici.

Many of these bands were on either the C/Z or Sub Pop record labels. Jack Endino, the so-called “Godfather of Grunge” recorded Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, Nirvana and Blood Circus between 1984 and 1989.
