SUMMARY 248 LIST OF REFERENCES 251 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to reveal a director's pre-productional preparation work with, and an analytical and interpretative study of, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and to arrive at a directorial plan which would bring forth all the inherent dramatic values and significant points of the play in a truly epic presentation. In the chapters which follow, the director's exhaustive work with the play is presented. The work in­ cludes a study of the special world of the play and a full analysis and moment-to-moment interpretation of it. This is essential in determining a directorial plan for staging the play. Presented then is the plan, which is simply an outline of the methods by which the director's interpreta­ tion of the play can be best expressed to the spectators. Included also are a study of the sources of the play and how it came into being, a discussion of Brecht and his Epic Theater, and a study of Brecht's own produc­ tion of the play with the Berliner Ensemble. Such studies are helpful to the director in his complex task of staging the play. The thesis is terminated with a summary of results of the pre-productional preparation work with the play. viii CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION: BRECHT AND BRECHTIAN THEATER Seldom is the theater fortunate enough to have an artist who can provide fresh, new ideas. Rarer still is when the theater has an artist who creates a more success­ ful theater with his fresh, new ideas, a theater richer and more productive because of its guided purpose. Neverthe­ less, theater in the twentieth century was lucky enough to possess such an artist, to see such a phenomenon. The phenomenon was felt on 29 September, 1922 when people gathered to see the first performance of Drums in the Night in the Kammerspiele Theater in Munich. The play belonged to a young artist called Bertolt Brecht. This very first performance of a Brecht work was highly praised and marked what Brecht had decided to do. Having awarded Brecht the coveted Kleist Prize, Herbert Ihering, the highly influ­ ential theater critic of a major newspaper, wrote: The twenty-four-year-old writer Bert Brecht has changed overnight the poetic face of Germany. Bert Brecht has brought to our times a new tone, a new tune, a new vision. The signal of Brecht's genius is that his plays have ushered in a new artistic totality, with laws of its own, a dramaturgy of its own. His plays, starting with Drums in the Night, 1 2 increasingly in Ball, and In the Jungle of the Cities, are new poetic planets. ... He is young and has already seen all the depths.* The young Brecht had felt the necessity for change, had begun establishing the foundation of the new laws of a new theater, and had become determined to spend his entire life battling against the misdoings of the rotten-to-the- core theater of his time. In 1920, Brecht wrote of the theater of the town of his birth thus: Even the most indulgent opportunists would not have the gall to claim that the Augsburg City Theater contributes to culture—not even at Augsburg's level.

Krouk Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian University of California, Berkeley Professor Mark Sandberg, Chair This study examines selections from the work of three modernist writers who also supported Norwegian fascism and the Nazi occupation of Norway: Knut Hamsun (1859- 1952), winner of the 1920 Nobel Prize; Rolf Jacobsen (1907-1994), Norway’s major modernist poet; and Åsmund Sveen (1910-1963), a fascinating but forgotten expressionist figure. In literary studies, the connection between fascism and modernism is often associated with writers such as Ezra Pound or Filippo Marinetti. I look to a new national context and some less familiar figures to think through this international issue. Employing critical models from both literary and historical scholarship in modernist and fascist studies, I examine the unique and troubling intersection of aesthetics and politics presented by each figure. After establishing a conceptual framework in the first chapter, “Unsettling Modernity,” I devote a separate chapter to each author. Analyzing both literary publications and lesser-known documents, I describe how Hamsun’s early modernist fiction carnivalizes literary realism and bourgeois liberalism; how Sveen’s mystical and queer erotic vitalism overlapped with aspects of fascist discourse; and how Jacobsen imagined fascism as way to overcome modernity’s culture of nihilism.

    REBOOTING BRECHT: REIMAGINING EPIC THEATRE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Andrea Rice A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2019 Committee: Edgar Landgraf, Advisor Kristie Foell Clayton Rosati ii ABSTRACT Edgar Landgraf, Advisor This thesis highlights the ways in which Bertolt Brecht’s concept of epic theatre pertains to video games, more particularly, visual novels. Digital drama and romance genres (aka “dating simulators”) are known for their “realism” for their ability to make the player feel as if they are interacting with real people. Yet, the deceptiveness is their apparent inability to replicate fully the kinds of social interactions a person can have. The plot structure oftentimes is also rather simplistic: the goal of these games is that the player gets the girl of their dreams, despite any hardships. The horror game Doki Doki Literature Club (2017) by game developer Dan Salvato challenges these genre shortcomings and aspire to make productive, I will argue, a Brechtian notion of epic theatre. Salvato had a love-hate relationship with visual novels. To him, visual novels were nothing more than “cute girls doing cute things” where any tragic backstory or character arc is just another objective the player must overcome to make the girl of their dreams fall in love with them. Like Brecht, Salvato wants to destroy the illusions created by visual novels and shock people into reflecting about such illusions. He created Doki Doki Literature Club, a horror game disguised as a dating simulator, which takes a critical look at issues such a mental health that visual novels often gloss over and treat as plot points in the story.

Hij begint bovendien de pseudo-Angèle te verleid en. Angèle's list met de grammofoonplaat en haar voorwendsel - wat eigenlijk amper een voorwendsel is - om met de Tsaar op de divan te kruipen wordt achterhaald door het nieuws dat de politie het komplot heeft ontdekt. De grammofoonopname van het Dobbri-Saxophoon­ Orkest werd onder supervisie van Weill gemaakt in 1927 in Berlijn en is tijdens alle produkties van de opera gebruikt. Kurt Weill, Alabama-Song De " Aiabama-Song" vormt een onderdeel van het "Mahagonny-Songspiel", dat op 18 juni 1927 in Baden-Baden in première ging, onder regie van o.a. Brecht en met Lotte Lenya als één van de vokalisten. De programmatoelichting zegt: Weill kondigt in dit stuk, zoals vele kunstenaars van deze tijd dat ieder op hun eigen wijze doen, het einde van de burgerlijke kunstvormen aan.

    HERITAGE AND MEMORY STUDIES 1 HERITAGE AND MEMORY STUDIES Did nations and nation states exist in the early modern period? In the Jensen (ed.) field of nationalism studies, this question has created a rift between the so-called ‘modernists’, who regard the nation as a quintessentially modern political phenomenon, and the ‘traditionalists’, who believe that nations already began to take shape before the advent of modernity. While the modernist paradigm has been dominant, it has been challenged in recent years by a growing number of case studies that situate the origins of nationalism and nationhood in earlier times. Furthermore, scholars from various disciplines, including anthropology, political history and literary studies, have tried to move beyond this historiographical dichotomy by introducing new approaches. The Roots of Nationalism: National Identity Formation in Early Modern Europe, 1600-1815 challenges current international scholarly views on the formation of national identities, by offering a wide range of contributions which deal with early modern national identity formation from various European perspectives – especially in its cultural manifestations. Whether it be as a symbol of proletarian solidarity in East German theater or as part of West German literary engagement with American Jewish culture, Yiddish shows up all over postwar German literature and performance. Building on scholarship from German Studies, Yiddish Studies, and cultural and political history, the following study connects the study of Yiddish in German literature after 1945 both to discourses from the early 20th century and to broader discussions on German identity and literary legacy in the postwar era. I am primarily interested in the reinvention of the folk tradition following the Nazi era and the creation of a usable literary past at a time in which the German political and geographic present was in flux. This dissertation explores these issues by looking at the ways in which German-language authors on both sides of the Berlin Wall, and those writing after its fall, relied on Yiddish to negotiate national literary identities.
