She asks that African feminists transform themselves and societies into a more equitable, democratic and tolerant one. With passion, with anger, with outrage or with justice, as you please. But get drunk. And if sometimes you should happen to awake, On the stairs of a palace, on the green grass of a ditch, in the dreary solitude of your own room, and find that your drunkenness is ebbingor has vanished, Ask the wind and the wave, ask star, bird, or clock, ask everythingthat flies, everythingthat moans, everythingthat flows, everythingthat sings, everythingthat speaks, Ask them the time; and the wind, the wave, the star, the bird and the clock will all reply: ‘It is Time to get drunk! With passion, with anger, with outrage or with justice, as you please.’ Speaking the F word This is a slightly modified version of the poem entitled,‘Be Drunk’ by the 19th century French Poet, Charles Baudelaire. I believe that feminists and women’s rights activists around the world need to be poetically drunk! The problem with the women’s move- ments today, particularly those in Africa, is that most of its activists are either teetotal and thus totally sober or only slightly tipsy.We need to be absolutely giddy, elated, exhi- larated and drunk on our cause, our objectives, our mission and our obligations. We need to fanthe flames of feminism. We need to change the way we‘do’ feminism. Abstract ‘Mainstream feminism’ in India remained substantially elitist in its concerns carrying the legacy of ‘western feminism’. As such it failed to appreciate, accommodate and represent the specific concerns of Dalit women. Consequently Dalit women are forced to lead a separate movement. It is the premise of this paper that the nascent Dalit Feminism, which could not derive any theoretical and representational sustenance from the Indian Feminism, can draw from the African American womanist/feminist experiences as it shares a similar socio-historical environment. Further, it argues in favor of Dalit feminism as a more inclusive kind of feminism that challenges oppression of any form for women in India or elsewhere. As much of Dalit women’s writing is produced in Indian vernaculars a few short stories from Telugu Dalit writing, translated into English are analyzed to reflect different perspectives of Dalit women’s discourse. There are various reasons for this distrust. Some (often those in disciplines that have proactively embraced decoloniality) hold that feminism is a western colonizing construct, which has been imposed on the country by imperialists. This response implicitly or explicitly accuses feminism of complicity with a colonizing agenda that desires the subordination of African epistemologies. Others equate a feminist political position with an uncritical anger and aggression towards men. They argue that, far from being antagonistic towards men, women need to make alliances with men in order to craft an inclusive and sustainable future for the African continent.

The scholarship of bell hooks submits that the control of Black women ideologically, economically, socially and politically functions perfectly to form a highly discriminative but effective system that is designed to keep them in a submissive and subordinate place. As a Ph.D. student, in a reflective journey with my research supervisor, I engage in a struggle to define my own feminist perspective in as I prepare to explore the oppression, disadvantage and discrimination experienced by Kenyan women living with vaginal fistulas.

    AMINA MAMA «Feminist Africa»: A Pan-African Feminist Publication for the 21st Century1 «Feminist Africa» («FA») was established in the rush of post- apartheid vision and energy with which Africa greeted the dawn of the 21st century, during which even Africa’s flagship universities were struggling to regenerate intellectual life and higher education systems after the so-called “Lost Decade” of the 1980’s. During the 1980’s African research life had suffered with the imposition of so-called structural “adjustment” packages that compounded the long-term structural dependency and decapitated higher education institutions, undermining and suppressing independent knowledge production within a few years of political independence. African knowledge came to rely on independent scholarly networks and small research institutes established in multiple efforts to attend to the vast research needs that confront all developing nations.2 Although we did not know it at the time, «FA» was the very first open-access digital scholarly publications specifically dedicated to promoting the feminist knowledge production and circulation of the 1 «Feminist Africa»’s existing archive of 22 Issues is available at the website http://www.agi.ac.za/agi/feminist-africa. 2 The Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA, formed in 1975), the Association of African Women for Research and Development (AAWORD AFARD, formed in 1977).
