Editorial Amina Mama The launch of Feminist Africa marks a critical moment in the continental history of gender politics. Three decades after the development industry first began to respond to the international resurgence of women's movements, African gender politics have become increasingly complex and contradictory. Feminism, as a movement that is both global and local, leaves little untouched. In post-colonial contexts it presents a praxis that directly opposes the hegemonic interests of multinational corporations, international financial and development agencies and nation-states, as well as the persisting male domination of disparate traditional structures, civil society formations and social movements. In African contexts, feminism has emerged out of women's deep engagement with and commitment to national liberation, so it is hardly surprising that African women's movements today feature in the disparate struggles and social movements characterising post-colonial life. African women are mobilising at local, regional and international levels, and deploying various strategies and forms. Little wonder that they display gender politics ranging from the radically subversive to the unashamedly conservative. Gender politics in post-colonial Africa are deeply contested, within and beyond the minority who might name themselves as feminists. Today's women activists are as likely to be engaging the World Bank over the deleterious impact of structural adjustment on African women as they are to be lobbying the national governments over the marginalisation of women in the corridors of political power, or challenging traditional and community-based organisations. Since independence, the persistence of patriarchal hegemony across the African region has stimulated a visible proliferation of feminist scholarship and strategy, yet this is only rarely brought together for collective reflection and analysis. -

ANNUALANNUAL REPORTREPORT Amref Health Africa in the USA 2017 WE ARE AN AFRICAN-LED ORGANIZATION TRANSFORMING AFRICAN HEALTH FROM WITHIN AFRICA We strengthen health systems and train African health workers to respond to the continent’s health challenges: maternal and child health, non-com- municable and infectious diseases, access to clean water and sanitation, and surgical and clinical out- reach. Our approach is community-based and makes the people we reach partners, rather than just beneficiaries. Amref Health Africa ANNUAL REPORT 2017 2 WELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL REPORT 2017 was a landmark year for Amref Health Africa as we celebrated our 60th anniversary. Six decades of equipping African communities with the knowledge and tools to build sustainable and effective health systems. Thanks en- tirely to our donors. We hope you are proud to call yourselves a part of the Amref Health Africa family. In 2017 alone, we reached 9.6 million people with health services and trained 125,000 health workers thanks to your support. This achieve- ment should not be downplayed, especially within the context of the US Government drastically reducing their budget to foreign humanitarian aid, with the greatest cut to family planning programs. The people hardest hit by these cuts are women and children, the population that we primarily serve. We met this challenge head on and boosted our work in raising awareness of what we do in Africa and reaching more supporters. Our second annual ArtBall was bigger on all fronts and allowed us to engage with a vibrant com- munity of artists, art lovers, and musicians. -

Date: June 12, 2020 Name: Lillian Chioma Nwosu CEU eTD Collection Signature: ii Abstract This thesis examines the impact of colonialism and military regimes on the development of political philosophy and government in postcolonial African countries, using Nigeria as a case study. Particularly, it interrogates the nature of the social contract in precolonial times, colonial times, and precolonial times. Using the Women’s War of 1929, it draws a contrast between the nature of the social contract in precolonial and colonial times. This thesis finds that while colonialism eroded the political systems and philosophies of the peoples of precolonial Nigeria, both colonialism and military rule heavily contributed to a strong culture of state authoritarianism, and the social contract was severely weakened by both events. -

She is a holder of a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for Foreign Scholars and a research assistant at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Graduate Institute. She holds an LL.M in Law and Politics of International Security from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Netherlands) and an LL.B from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). Her current research interests include legality, feminist epistemologies, and the production of knowledge. Carolina Oliveira Beghelli holds a master’s degree on Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Switzerland), having specialised in security systems’ reform from a gender perspective. She also holds an LL.B from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). Over the past years, Carolina has been working with civil society support in the Latin-American region, focused on women human rights defenders and protection strategies. 2 This working paper provides findings from a research conducted at the Graduate Institute’s Gender Centre with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Ndlovu-Gatsheni2 Archie Mafeje Research Institute University of South Africa Introduction It is a great honour to have been invited by the Vice-Chancellor and Rector Professor Jonathan Jansen and the Centre for African Studies at the University of the Free State (UFS) to deliver this lecture in memory of Professor Ali A. Mazrui. I have chosen to speak on Ali A. Mazrui on the Invention of Africa and Postcolonial Predicaments because it is a theme closely connected to Mazrui’s academic and intellectual work and constitute an important part of my own research on power, knowledge and identity in Africa. Remembering Ali A Mazrui It is said that when the journalist and reporter for the Christian Science Monitor Arthur Unger challenged and questioned Mazrui on some of the issues raised in his televised series entitled The Africans: A Triple Heritage (1986), he smiled and responded this way: ‘Good, [...]. Many people disagree with me. My life is one long debate’ (Family Obituary of Ali Mazrui 2014). The logical question is how do we remember Professor Ali A Mazrui who died on Sunday 12 October 2014 and who understood his life to be ‘one long debate’? More importantly how do we reflect fairly on Mazrui’s academic and intellectual life without falling into the traps of what the South Sudanese scholar Dustan M. Wai (1984) coined as Mazruiphilia (hagiographical pro-Mazruism) and Mazruiphobia (aggressive anti-Mazruism)? How do we pay tribute -

Conversation Living Feminist Politics - Amina Mama interviews Winnie Byanyima Winnie Byanyima is MP for Mbarara Municipality in Western Uganda. The daughter of two well-known politicians, she was a gifted scholar and won awards to pursue graduate studies in aeronautical engineering. However, she chose to join the National Resistance Movement under Museveni's leadership, and later became one of the first women to stand successfully for direct elections. Winnie is best known for her gender advocacy work with non- governmental organisations, her anti-corruption campaigns, and her opposition to Uganda's involvement in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She is currently affiliated to the African Gender Institute, where she is writing a memoir of three generations of women – her grandmother, her mother and her own life in politics. Here she is interviewed by Amina Mama on behalf of Feminist Africa. Amina Mama: Let's begin by talking about your early life, and some of the formative influences. Winnie Byanyima: I grew up pretty much my father's daughter. I admired him very much, and people said I was like him. I had a more difficult relationship with my mother. But in the last few years as I've tried to reflect on who I am and why I believe the things that I believe, I've found myself coming back to my mother and my grandmother, and having to face the fact that I take a lot from those women. It's tough, because it means that I must recognise all that I didn't take as important about my mother's struggles. -

Blackmon ABSTRACT The purpose of this research project has been to shed light on the experiences of Black women in Afrocentric groups—Nation of Gods and Earths, the Black Panther Party, and Rastafarians—that operated on the fringes of society during the 1960s through the early 2000s. This work articulates the gender dynamics between the men and women of the groups. In it, I trace the history of Black nationalism and identity in the United States in the late 19th century to the 20th century which set the framework for the formation of the Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE), the Black Panther Party(BPP), and Rastafarianism and its members to see themselves as a part of the Black nation or community and the women of these groups to see their identity tied in with the goals and desires of the group not as one set on individualistic ambitions. The Africana womanist did not see herself as an individual but rather a vital part of the entire Black community. -

Although Pereira remained head of the country’s major political party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC), he had been dismissed (along with the entire cabinet) by the president in August 2015 during a power struggle between the two men. -

24 | Feminist Africa 19 Promise and betrayal: Women fighters and national liberation in Guinea Bissau Aliou Ly Introduction Guinea Bissau presents an especially clear-cut case in which women’s mass participation in the independence struggle was not followed by sustained commitment to women’s equality in the post-colonial period. Amilcar Cabral of Guinea Bissau and his party, the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), realised that the national liberation war could not succeed without women’s participation, not only as political agents but also as fighters. Cabral also understood, and attempted to convince his male Party members, that a genuine national liberation meant liberation not only from colonialism but also from all the local traditional socio-cultural forces, both pre-colonial and imposed by the Portuguese rulers, that excluded women from decision-making structures at every level of society. Sadly, many of the former women fighters also say that male PAIGC members did not fulfil promises of socio-political, economic and gender equality that were crucial to genuine social transformation. Because women participated in bringing about independence in very dramatic ways, because the Party that came to power actually promised equality, and because the Party then had women return to their traditional subordinate roles, Guinea Bissau provides an especially clear case for exploring the relation in Africa between broken promises to women and the unhappiness reflected in the saying “Africa is growing but not developing”. In May 2013, Africa’s Heads of State celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity in a positive mood because of a rising GDP and positive view about African economies.
