Joseph A. Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

  • BOB SEDERGREEN: the INTERVIEW by Adrian Jackson*
BOB SEDERGREEN: THE INTERVIEW by Adrian Jackson* _______________________________________________________ [This interview appeared in the December 1981 edition of Jazz Magazine] ver the last decade, I have had the pleasure of hearing pianist Bob Sedergreen play on many occasions: with vibist Alan Lee, with a succession of bands led O by Brian Brown, as the focal point of the Ted Vining Trio, with Onaje, as the wild card in Peter Gaudion’s Blues Express, providing fairly heroic support to visiting stars Jimmy Witherspoon, Phil Woods, Richie Cole and Milt Jackson, even solo. I have always enjoyed and admired his playing for its unflagging swing and qualities of joy, resourcefulness and commitment, and his determination to take chances at all times in search of inspiration, which he seems to find more frequently than most. He has long impressed me as a jazz musician who often plays ‘above himself’ because he has the courage to do just that. Bob Sedergreen: the sum total of his music is pure Sedergreen… In the last few years, he has continued to increase the scope and depth of his playing, and his confidence in it, to the point where he is obviously one of the best musicians in Australia. We have too few others who can so consistently be so exciting, original, inventive, surprising and enjoyable. __________________________________________________________ *In 1981 when this was published, Adrian Jackson was a freelance writer, who had been jazz critic with the Melbourne Age since 1978. 1 I won’t try to describe his playing. As with any really good jazz artist, his playing is a reflection of his listening and playing experiences, and his own personality.

  • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography
ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the finest singer/songwriters of our generation. The statuesque performer dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. Her talents have made her equally at home in jazz and pop as well as on stage, in the recording studio, on TV and in film. She is best known for starring in the hit Broadway musical "SWING!" and for writing and singing the theme to the internationally successful TV series,” THE NANNY". Ann is a devoted keeper-of-the-flame of the great American songbook. She brings fresh and original interpretations to these timeless classics and works to uphold the canon by writing songs with Cole Porter, Carole King, Barbara Carroll and others. Her spontaneity, intelligence, and soulful charisma have won her a diverse fan-base including notables as Barbra Streisand, Clive Davis, Carly Simon and Wynton Marsalis. The New York Times writes, “For sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway.” Ann attributes her voice and love of music to her mother, Shirley, who throughout her childhood sang and played torch songs, Gershwin and German lieder at the piano. Of the uniquely musical household she says, “I didn’t know it at the time, but we were sort of the Von Trapp family of Chicago.” After a music teacher discovered her unusually mature soprano voice, Ann was encouraged to study classically, honing the pitch-perfect control and expressive three octave range she is known for. While her voice teachers suggested she could have a career in opera, Ann eventually realized that she would be happier singing the music she most loved.

  • Jazz Police - Rene Marie, Karrin Allyson Highlight Jazz in July
Jazz Police - Rene Marie, Karrin Allyson Highlight Jazz in July ... http://www.jazzpolice.com/index2.php?option=com_content&t... Rene Marie, Karrin Allyson Highlight Jazz in July at the Dakota Written by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor Wednesday, 29 June 2011 Nachito Herrera©Andrea Canter Two leaders of American vocal jazz, each with a recent acclaimed recording, come to the Dakota in July, headed up a jazz calendar that also features Cuban pianist Nachito Herrera, former Twin Citian/stellar vocalist Bruce Henry, contemporary legends Ronnie Laws and The Rippingtons, and the second annual “Dakota Street Fest.” Also on the music calendar--- return visits from Brian McKnight and the Steeles. All That Jazz July 8-9, Nachito Herrera (8 pm). Since he emigrated from Cuba nearly ten years ago, Nachito Herrera has burrowed his way into the hearts of Twin Cities’ jazz fans with his monster technique, bottomless energy, and infectious enthusiasm for his homeland and its eclectic rhythms. Even fans of trad and polka now tap their Sorrel boots to montuno and clavé. As a child prodigy, Nachito studied classical music in Havana with Cuban masters Rubén González, Jorge Gomez Labraña, and Frank Fernández. He went on to serve as music director for several bands before leading Cubanismo! His travels to the US caught the eye of potential sponsors, including the Dakota’s Lowell Pickett, and with some wrangling with state department redtape, this amazing musician found himself in Minnesota. Over the past few years, Nachito’s nearly monthly performances at the Dakota have saluted the music of Earth, Wind and Fire and Duke Ellington, as well as the folk traditions of his homeland.
