Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction Ismat Chughtai, Sa'adat Hasan Manto
Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction I , Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Krishan Chandar, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majaz, Meeraji, and Khawaja Ahmed Abbas. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. In remembering Kaifi Azmi, Ranjit Hoskote says that the felicities of Urdu poetry and prose entered the consciousness of a vast, national audience through the medium of the popular Hindi cinema; for which masters of Urdu prose, such as Sadat [sic] Hasan Manto, wrote scripts, while many of the Progressives, Azmi included, provided lyrics. -
Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber
Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994). That the pleasures associated with film going have influenced consumption in India is also true; the impact of film on various fashion trends is recognized by scholars (Dwyer and Patel, 2002, pp. -

Reel Number 13
Reel Number 13 Gayathri Prabhu and Nikhil Govind (from Shadow Craft: Visual Aesthetics of Black and White Hindi Cinema, Bloomsbury Academic, 2021) Meena Kumari in Abrar Alvi’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) Source: National Film Archive of India The decision to write this book emerged from our artistic and academic trajectories intersecting over the question of how to develop a vocabulary to speak about the visual aesthetics of a cinema that had left an indelible imprint on the infancy of the nation. The same aesthetics made its presence felt in the terrain of our childhoods in the 1980s when these movies and film-makers continued to be celebrated in popular culture via reruns on television and cassettes played on VHS (Video Home Systems). Kamal Amrohi, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Nargis, Nutan and Abrar Alvi, came to represent a wistfully exhumed cinematic footprint. More recently, the iconic black-white- grey images from that time, stark to our colour-biased internet-weary eyes, reminded us that perhaps we had not given sufficient thought to what those assertive visual articulations represented to a collective consciousness that had shaped several decades of artists and viewers in India. The irony of this preoccupation with visual form, at a time when our engagement with the format was as far removed as possible from the original format of the cinema (35 mm), was not lost on us. Even though neither of us was born at the time of the films’ first theatrical release, our viewings were from television telecasts and cassettes played at home—for me it was the highlight of summer vacations in Mangalore (with gratitude to that archaic institution called the video rental library) and for Nikhil Govind these were viewings during school years in Burma (he wonders if the films were smuggled/pirated). -

Gender, Biasness and Indian Cinemas
JOURNAL OF CRITICAL REVIEWS ISSN- 2394-5125 VOL 7, ISSUE 09, 2020 Gender, Biasness and Indian Cinemas Sanchayita Khakholary Research Scholar, Gauhati University, Assam, India Indian cinema, a billion dollar entertainment institution, today earns the position of the largest film producing industry with worldwide audience. It produces about thousands of films each year and in comparison to other institutions, Indian cinemas have millions and millions of viewers, reaching to almost every part of the society. Since its very inception it have been playing the role of the most prominent source of entertainment to the people of India. Along with dramas, lots of dancing and singing, powerful contents it have successfully attracted massive interests. One can trace back the history of Indian cinemas to the year of 1896 when the first 6 silent films shot by Lumiere Brothers were shown at one of the hotels at Bombay( now Mumbai). Thus, marking the entry of cinematography in India (Hafeez, p. 62). In 1898, Hiralal seth had directed the Flower of Persia, a pioneer of short films. But it was not until 1913, that the first full length silent film was released. ‘Raja Harishchandra’, the movie directed, shot and produced by Dadasaheb phalke sets the base for the pre-Bollywood scenario in India. However, the term Bollywood is a misnomer to define ‘the whole of Indian cinemas’, since it stands for only the Hindi cinemas and in reality Indian cinemas represents films or movies of all genres and of all languages of India. After 1913, featured films gained acceleration in its production and by 1920s; Indian film industry started producing 27 featured films annually (Hafeez, p. -
