Follow Us! facebook.com/redlandsbowl • Twitter: @redlandsbowl • Instagram: redlandsbowl On December 4th, 1956 music history was made. This date found Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley together at Sun Record’s studio in Memphis, TN. A jam session ensued which seems to have happened by pure chance. Perkins, who by this time had already met success with "Blue Suede Shoes", had come into the studio that day, accompanied by his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland, to cut some new material, including a revamped version of an old blues song,"Matchbox". Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, who wished to try to fatten this sparse rockabilly instrumentation, had brought in his latest acquisition, singer and piano man extraordinaire Jerry Lee Lewis, still unknown outside Memphis, to play piano on the Perkins session. Sometime in the early afternoon, Elvis Presley, a former Sun artist himself but now at RCA, dropped in to pay a casual visit. He was, at the time, the biggest name in show business, having hit the top of the singles charts five times, and topping the album charts twice in the preceding 12-month period. Less than four months earlier, he had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, pulling an unheard of 83% of the television audience, which was estimated at 55 million, the largest in history up to that time. After chatting with Philips in the control room, Presley listened to the playback of Perkins’ session, which he pronounced to be good. Then he went out into the studio and sometime later the jam session began. At some point during the session, Sun artist Johnny Cash, who had recently enjoyed a few hits on the country charts, popped in. Cowboy Jack Clement was engi - neering that day and remembers saying to himself "I think I'd be remiss not to record this" and so he did and the night became rock and roll music history. Many famous artists such as Bob Dylan recall listening to these recordings and being tremendously inspired by. “One Night in Memphis” was created in 2012 by John Mueller, well known for his long running and successful number one tribute, “Winter Dance Party, tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.” For more info, visit www.onenightinmemphis.com or www.wdpproductions.com Alex Swindle as Elvis Presley Alex Swindle is a 23 year old singer and mu - sician and a National Grand Champion and 2015 Ultimate Elvis Top Ten World Finalist from Alabama. With ten years of performing as an Elvis Tribute Artist, Alex brings to the stage the thrill and charged atmosphere reminiscent of the young Elvis in his Sun Record days of 1954. A genuine Southern gentleman, Alex presents to his audience a raw talent and compelling charm much like Elvis at the beginning of his career. Neil Morrow as Johnny Cash Born and raised in Anaheim California, Neil Morrow always had a unique taste in music. At an early age, Neil was not drawn to the current styles of music but the music that was coined by DJ Alan Freed as "Rock and Roll." Morrow soon began to take up the piano and guitar and learned the styles of his favorites such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. But it wasn't Morrow's instrument skills that got the attention of oth - ers, it was his voice. His singing style has a familiar tone and range to everyone from Johnny Cash to Roy Orbison. After performing in many talent competitions, Neil decided to form a band and pay tribute to his favorite music of the 50's. It was sometime after Neil was approached to play piano for the nationally touring show “Buddy, Roy and Elvis.” It was soon after that Neil was brought to the front of the stage as Roy Orbison. A natural entertainer, Neil has since 2012 been featured as Johnny Cash with “One Night in Memphis” and always looks forward to the show. John Mueller as Carl Perkins John has had a successful professional acting and music career including guest roles on E! Entertainment, Ellen, Lois and Clark, Brisco County Jr. and the film Bloodline which also features two of John’s original songs but his real passion has remained with Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins and rock and roll from the 1950’s. Well known for his very successful show “Winter Dance Party,” the official and estate endorsed tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper, he created “One Night in Memphis,” also known as “A Night to Remember” back in 2012 and it is another smash hit. John is proud to have performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with John Mellencamp, Marshall Crenshaw, Nanci Griffith, and Joe Ely to name a few. Other highlights include a live TV appearance with over 2 million viewers na - tionwide on the Jerry Lewis Telethon and also performing a live sing-a-long ver - sion of "Peggy Sue" with over 48,000 fans at Texas Tech University's halftime show. Blair Carman as Jerry Lee Lewis Blair Carman hails from Cincinnati and has been playing piano since he was twelve years old. He grew interested in 1950's rock and roll by listening to his parents old 45's. A high in demand act know both nationally and internationally, Blair plays with his own band the Belle - view Boys the hits of Jerry Lee, Elvis, Hank Williams and all the greats. Blair was the only Jerry Lee Lewis performer personally invited to play at Jerry Lee Lewis's 75th birthday party at the Killer's home in Louisiana. Blair has been rocking and rolling with "One Night in Memphis" since 2012 and thanks everyone for coming out to the show. Jazz It Up, with Music Technology! 10 Tom Atkinson Central Missouri State University As the song goes , “Don’t know much about His -to-ry, don’t know much about Tech-no-lo-gy!” But what we do know is that music technology now plays a crucial role in most schools. Fully integrating this technology requires much greater awareness. From Mozart to Madonna, technology has forever changed the field of music. Although accessing music through the Web and through digital storage devices has been remarkably significant, perhaps to an even greater extent, music synthesizers and editing software have dramatically changed the very nature of music. Technology provides powerful aids to composing, notating, editing, and performing music that even elementary school students can learn to use. Cakewalk Sonar (Image 1) represents affordable state-of-the-art digital recording software that compares to expensive studio facilities. There's a lot of flexibility built into Sonar to achieve a variety of musical forms including recording audio, creating MIDI files, looping and sequencing, and adding effects. Any style of music can be created using Sonar's MIDI and audio systems and there are also DX instruments and automated effects. Band-in-a-Box (Image 2), described as an intelligent accompaniment software, is a powerful and creative music composition tool for exploring and developing musical ideas with near-instantaneous feedback. It contains features to display notation, enter lyrics, create melodies, add harmonization, and program a variety of musical styles. The Soloist generates professional quality solos over any chord progression. The Melodist creates songs from scratch with chords, melodies, intros, solos, and even a title.

Geoffrey Brown 3 This thesis is dedicated to Agnès Calatayud, an inspirational teacher, who reconnected me to French cinema after a long carence, and who, crucially, first introduced me to the films of Claire Denis. 4 Abstract This thesis argues that the interest which the films of Claire Denis display in the ever-shifting modes of relations between people is illustrated through analysis of how music is used throughout her corpus of feature films. Denis draws on an extremely eclectic palette of musical styles, and the thesis proposes that these varying musical modalities are central to her treatment of relational issues, as are the ways in which she deploys her chosen musical selections.

  • Hht Tribute Salutes Buddy Holly and Legends of Rock N Roll
PRESS RELEASE – October 7, 2019 Susan Carrier (951) 551-5363 [email protected] HHT TRIBUTE SALUTES BUDDY HOLLY AND LEGENDS OF ROCK N ROLL Before his untimely death at the age of 22, Buddy Holly was a rising star and a central figure in the evolution of Rock and Roll. In his seven year career, Holly recorded only three albums, but his impact on future artists was so significant that he was among the very first singers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he remains near the top of Rolling Stone's list of the greatest artists of all time. In 1959, Holly was killed in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. In his iconic hit "American Pie" Don McLean memorialized the date as "The Day the Music Died." On Saturday October 26th, "Not Fade Away" will bring to the Historic Hemet Theatre their high energy tribute to Buddy Holly and the Legends of Rock n Roll. The band members (straight outta NYC) have performed in off-Broadway shows and dazzled audiences nationally in productions of The Buddy Holly Story, Ring of Fire, and Million Dollar Quartet. Together they have created a special tribute to the iconic music of Holly, Valens, The Big Bopper and other iconic Rock and Roll stars. Come watch as they dance, jump up on their instruments, play a solo behind their heads, and jump through ropes -- all to powerful renditions of the classic hit songs like "That'll Be The Day," "Peggy Sue," "Summertime Blues," "La Bamba," "Chantilly Lace," and "Twist and Shout." You've never seen a Buddy Holly show quite like this! This show will be the fifth in Season Three of the "Tribute Mania" Concert Series.

November has been praised for years by musicians, publishers and engravers as one of the finest and most vivid fonts ever designed for music notation programs. For use in programs such as Finale, Dorico, Sibelius or LilyPond, November 2 now includes a astonishing variety of symbols, from usual shapes such as noteheads, clefs and rests to rarer characters like microtonal accidentals, special instrument techniques, early clefs or orna- ments, ranging from the Renaissance1 to today’s avant-garde music. Based on the principle that each detail means as much as the whole, crafted with ultimate care, November 2 is a font of unequalled coherence. While in tune with the most recent technologies, its inspiration comes from the art of tradi- tional music engraving.

Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 By Elizabeth Sallinger M.M., Duquesne University, 2010 B.A., Pennsylvania State University, 2008 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Musicology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Paul R. Laird Roberta Freund Schwartz Bryan Kip Haaheim Colin Roust Leslie Bennett Date Defended: 5 December 2016 ii The dissertation committee for Elizabeth Sallinger certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 Chair: Paul R. Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores.
