Feature Films 2013-2015
feature films made in Luxembourg 2013-2015 MADE IN EUROPE The young, vibrant and vivacious film sector in Luxembourg is especially proud this year. The Oscar for “Mr Hublot” (best short animation) is the first Oscar ever for a Luxembourg production. This international acclaim is an acknowledgment of the know- how, competence and excellence of the entire Luxembourg production sector and is a boost for the industry. This majority Luxembourg co-production, produced by Luxembourg based Zeilt Productions, and directed by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares, was backed through the direct financial support mechanism provided by Film Fund Luxembourg, an official body under the supervision of the minister responsible for Communications and Culture. Luxembourg is a forerunner when it comes to co-productions. All of the 20 feature films (live action and animation) and documentaries that are annually produced in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg are mainly co-productions between a national producer and one or more international partner(s). With the support of local creative and technical talent, the 3 productions initiated, developed and created in the Grand-Duchy - as highlighted in this brochure - are all Films from the heart of Europe. Before the fi lms themselves, the guests, the programs thought out and implemented over the past months, there fi rst came to mind the people whose substantial contributions have ensured that the Festival fi nds itself where it is today. First and foremost Mark Peranson, Head of Programming, and Nadia Dresti, our International Head, and then Lorenzo Esposito, Sergio Fant and Aurélie Godet (“my” selection committee), Alessandro Marcionni (Pardi di domani), Carmen Werner and Olmo Giovannini (Programming Offi ce), Martina Malacrida and Ananda Scepka (Open Doors). -

In the era of Art Nouveau’s ascendancy, around the turn of the 20th century, the style (with its eroticism and whiplash curves) was often seen as troubling and unsettling, and words like “pernicious,” “perverse,” and “horrific” were attached to it in the press. It is this sense of Art Nouveau that contemporary horror film directors revive and evoke in creating their cinematic tableaux of terror. The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears. Choices concerning a film’s production design are made for numerous reasons. Most obvious is authenticity, by which the look of sets and props conforms to the era and culture in which the drama takes place. In movies of the 1930s, set amongst the wealthy leisured classes, for instance, production design was often marked by an Art Deco sensibility, one associated with modern chic and luxury. Alternately, decisions concerning art direction can be made on a largely aesthetic level in an attempt to create arresting screen beauty. This might be said of films like Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) or Zhang Yimou’s Curse of the Golden Flower (2006). -

Inside this year’s catalogue, all 318 selected films are featured, spanning five major programme sections that together celebrate the incredible diversity and unstoppable creativity of worldwide filmmaking culture. The Film Festival’s mission to make this culture easily accessible to a growing audience is led by the global reach of the Official Selection, which this year brings previews and premieres of 30 acclaimed new feature films to Leeds. In Retrospectives, classic films are revived in new settings and master filmmakers whose work is rarely screened are honoured in special seasons, with the focus this year on Masaki Kobayashi and Walerian Borowczyk. The home of world genre cinema at the Film Festival is Fanomenon and for 2013 there is an enormous feast of fantasy, horror, action, animation, sci-fi, family treats, cult classics, and the unclassifiable. The documentary section Cinema Versa gives voice to vital issues and marginalised figures, presents fascinating profiles of musicians, and supports unique collaborative events.
