Sexo, Amor Y Cine Por Salvador Sainz Introducción

From the cell to the pixel, explore how we understand ourselves in the modern world. CONTRIBUTOR VIET THANH NGUYEN Associate Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction puts him in the illustrious company of such doyens of American literature as John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Saul Bellow and Toni Morrison — all previous recipients. Nguyen won for his first novel, The Sympathizer (Grove Press, 2015), which explores the Vietnam War from multiple perspectives through the lens of his conflicted protagonist, an American-educated spy for the Viet Cong. “I went into this novel wanting to write without compromise, without worry- ing about what other people would think. The novel is meant to be provocative and critical of all sides in- volved in this war, so there is something here for ev- eryone to dislike,” Nguyen said. “It’s also meant to be as honest, truthful and painful a novel as I could write, and there was no way I could do that if I had to worry about what an audi- ence would think.” Nguyen said winning the Pulitzer felt like a victory. “I think this award marks the necessity in American literature for paying atten- tion to diverse voices that will illuminate American his- tory in important and chal- lenging ways for American audiences.” Nguyen hopes readers reflect on the idea that nurturing a single-sided viewpoint is what draws us into conflict and war. -
Appendix 1: Selected Films
Appendix 1: Selected Films The very random selection of films in this appendix may appear to be arbitrary, but it is an attempt to suggest, from a varied collection of titles not otherwise fully covered in this volume, that approaches to the treatment of sex in the cinema can represent a broad church indeed. Not all the films listed below are accomplished – and some are frankly maladroit – but they all have areas of interest in the ways in which they utilise some form of erotic expression. Barbarella (1968, directed by Roger Vadim) This French/Italian adaptation of the witty and transgressive science fiction comic strip embraces its own trash ethos with gusto, and creates an eccentric, utterly arti- ficial world for its foolhardy female astronaut, who Jane Fonda plays as basically a female Candide in space. The film is full of off- kilter sexuality, such as the evil Black Queen played by Anita Pallenberg as a predatory lesbian, while the opening scene features a space- suited figure stripping in zero gravity under the credits to reveal a naked Jane Fonda. Her peekaboo outfits in the film are cleverly designed, but belong firmly to the actress’s pre- feminist persona – although it might be argued that Barbarella herself, rather than being the sexual plaything for men one might imagine, in fact uses men to grant herself sexual gratification. The Blood Rose/La Rose Écorchée (aka Ravaged, 1970, directed by Claude Mulot) The delirious The Blood Rose was trumpeted as ‘The First Sex Horror Film Ever Made’. In its uncut European version, Claude Mulot’s film begins very much like an arthouse movie of the kind made by such directors as Alain Resnais: unortho- dox editing and tricks with time and the film’s chronology are used to destabilise the viewer. -

Set against the backdrop of Naples, Italy, in 1950, this romantic drama tells the story of Angela, (played by Sophia Loren), a woman in the twilight of her years who rides the emotional roller coaster of her last telephone conversation with the man she loves as he is leaving her for another woman. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: The legendary theatrical piece “La Voix Humaine” by Jean Cocteau, on which the film is inspired, has been performed for decades by the greatest actresses of their generation. It is the holy grail of acting, intimidating most actors for its demanding emotional range and separating the wheat from the chaff. It is now the turn of film legend Sophia Loren to take on the challenge, fulfilling a forty year old dream to inhabit that role. Director Edoardo Ponti helms the film. He teams up once again with world renowned and best selling Neapolitan writer Erri De Luca for the screen adaptation of the Cocteau piece, right on the heels of last year’s award winning film “The Nightshift belongs to the stars”, short listed for the 2013 Oscars and winner of the 2013 Best Live Action short at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. -

Now, on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and her father’s disappearance, Heather discovers she is not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deep into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever. SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D is based on Konami’s acclaimed survival horror video game franchise, but the film takes us beyond a mere adaptation with a storyline ideal for the big screen. Although it is a sequel to the first film (SILENT HILL, directed by Christophe Gans in 2006), this new installment stands on its own for new audiences. It will not only provoke shivers but will undoubtedly strike a deep personal chord with many viewers, including those familiar with the SILENT HILL world and those just discovering it. Samuel Hadida produced the film as well as the first SILENT HILL film. -

Silent Hill Production Notes
SILENT HILL PRODUCTION NOTES A child’s mysterious ailment. A desperate mother. An eerie, deserted city shrouded in mist, plagued by secrets. The mysteries are only beginning to deepen. When young mother Rose (Radha Mitchell) -- desperate to find a cure for her daughter Sharon’s bizarre illness -- refuses to accept a medical recommendation of psychiatric institutionalization, she flees with Sharon and heads for SILENT HILL, the town that her daughter continuously names in her sleep. Although her husband Christopher (Sean Bean) adamantly opposes, Rose is convinced the mysterious town will hold all the answers. But as her car approaches the deserted city’s limits, a mysterious figure appears in the road, forcing Rose to swerve and crash. When she comes to, Sharon is gone, and suddenly Rose – accompanied by a determined police officer (Laurie Holden) from a nearby town -- is on a desperate quest in Silent Hill to find her child. It’s immediately clear that her destination – left alone since devastating coal fires ravaged Silent Hill -- is unlike any place she's ever been: smothered by fog, inhabited by a variety of strange, haunted beings, and periodically overcome by a living Darkness that literally transforms everything it touches. As Rose searches for her daughter, she begins to learn the history of Silent Hill – its violent, puritanical past and the origins of its accursed state -- and realizes that her daughter is just part of a larger, more terrifying destiny. Silent Hill stars Radha Mitchell (Melinda and Melinda, Finding Neverland, Man on Fire), Sean Bean (North Country, National Treasure, Lord of the Rings), Laurie Holden (Fantastic Four, The Majestic), Deborah Kara Unger (White Noise, The Game, Crash), Kim Coates (Assault on Precinct 13, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down), Tanya Allen (Starhunter), with Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, Reign of Fire) and Jodelle Ferland (Tideland). -

LIVES of the SAINTS Synopsis
LIVES OF THE SAINTS Synopsis “Where pride is, the snake goes,” Italian proverb Adultery, the evil eye, and a snakebite are the circumstances that shape the childhood of Vittorio Innocente in the small village of Valle De Sole in a society dominated by religion and superstition. LIVES OF THE SAINTS begins in an Italy almost unchanged since the beginning of the last century—moving across time from the horrors of wartime Italy to the swinging counterculture that dominated Toronto in the late 60’s. This “intimate epic” travels from the sun-drenched Mediterranean to the frozen Arctic, to the flatlands of rural Ontario and finally back to the isolated hilltop village of Valle del Sole, Italy (Valley of the Sun), 20 years later in a story suffused with mystery, and betrayal. Who will pay for the sins and secrets of the family past? Vittorio’s turbulent childhood revolves around his love for his mother, Cristina, (whose husband Mario, has emigrated to Canada) but is informed by his Aunt Teresa (Sophia Loren). Also the village schoolteacher, she is his disciplinarian and his moral guide. To enhance his lessons, she uses stories from a religious picture book Lives of the Saints which she gives him 1 as a gift when he leaves Valle De Sole with his mother for the hope of a new and better life in Canada. A widow, Teresa is the glue that holds the family together while Cristina (Sabrina Ferilli), an independent spirit, is strong-willed and fiery. The village is full of whispers when Cristina is bitten in the barn by a poisonous snake. -
