  • Woody Loves Ingmar
1 Woody loves Ingmar Now that, with Blue Jasmine , Woody Allen has come out … … perhaps it’s time to dissect all his previous virtuoso creative adapting. I’m not going to write about the relationship between Vicky Christina Barcelona and Jules et Jim . ————— Somewhere near the start of Annie Hall , Diane Keaton turns up late for a date at the cinema with Woody Allen, and they miss the credits. He says that, being anal, he has to see a film right through from the very start to the final finish, so it’s no go for that movie – why don’t they go see The Sorrow and the Pity down the road? She objects that the credits would be in Swedish and therefore incomprehensible, but he remains obdurate, so off they go, even though The Sorrow and the Pity is, at over four hours, twice the length of the film they would have seen. 2 The film they would have seen is Ingmar Bergman’s Face to Face , with Liv Ullmann as the mentally-disturbed psychiatrist – you see the poster behind them as they argue. The whole scene is a gesture. Your attention is being drawn to an influence even while that influence is being denied: for, though I don’t believe Bergman has seen too much Allen, Allen has watched all the Bergman there is, several times over. As an example: you don’t often hear Allen’s early comedy Bananas being referred to as Bergman-influenced: but not only does its deranged Fidel Castro-figure proclaim that from now on the official language of the revolutionised country will be Swedish, but in the first reel there’s a straight Bergman parody.

  • 5 Small Time Crooks
Episode 5 - SMALL TIME CROOKS (2000) MUSIC: With Plenty Of Money And You, by Hal Kemp and His Orchestra. Introduction SMALL TIME CROOKS is the 30th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 2000. Woody Allen stars as Ray, a small time crook with a big time plan to rob a bank, digging through from the shop next door. His wife Frenchy, played by TRACEY ULLMAN, sells cookies in the store as a cover. But then the cookies start to sell… SMALL TIME CROOKS was a pure and silly comedy after a run of bitter and dark films. It’s not the deepest, and not one of his best. But it’s an easy film to love, held down by some loveable losers. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast, from me, the creator of the Woody Allen Pages website. This week, episode five, we look at 2000’s SMALL TIME CROOKS. We’ll look at how the film came to be, what I loved and didn’t love and plenty of fun facts and trivia. Of course, spoilers are everywhere, so watch the film first. Conception and story By the late 90s, Allen was making some of his most challenging and bitter work. Some of it was great but 1997’s DECONSTRUCTING HARRY was angry and rude, 1998’s CELEBRITY was bleak and without hope and 1999’s SWEET AND LOWDOWN was a downbeat portrait of a self destructive man. So it was with some relief to actually have a bit of fun when SMALL TIME CROOKS came along.

  • 4 Bullets Over Broadway
Episode 4 - BULLETS OVER BROADWAY (1994) MUSIC: Toot Toot Tootsie - Al Jolson Introduction BULLETS OVER BROADWAY is the 23rd film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 1994. JOHN CUSACK stars as David Shayne, a struggling playwright who agrees to take some mob money to put on his latest play. The catch - he has to cast a mobster’s girl, and face off with her bodyguard - in more ways than one. BULLETS OVER BROADWAY is one of Woody Allen’s very best films, and it mixes so many elements that makes Allen great. The jazz era setting, the excellent costumes, the memorable characters, the big statement on the nature of art and so much more. It swept the awards season and audiences loved it too. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast, from me, the creator of the Woody Allen Pages website. This week, episode four, we look at 1994’s BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. As usual we look at how the film was made, the good and the bad, and lots of fun facts. Of course, spoilers are everywhere. Conception and story BULLETS OVER BROADWAY is the first and only writing collaboration between Woody Allen and DOUGLAS MCGRATH. McGrath was a friend and writer, and Allen has said that every so often he liked to collaborate with someone and not have the process be so lonely. He wrote with MICKEY ROSE in the 60s and 70s. He wrote with MARSHALL BRICKMAN in the 70s and on 1993’s MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY, the Woody Allen film that preceded this one.

Frédérique Brisset 1 Woody Allen does not belong to the Hollywood studio system, and his success relies much more on European than American markets. This involves a great deal of attention focused on strategies that facilitate positive reception of his films by foreign audiences, among them the French, and choosing his titles for export has become a major step in the process. Among his latest films, Cassandra's Dream (2007) made less than $1m in the US, but more than $21m abroad, including $3.5m in France.1 For a mere $5m in the US, Whatever Works (2009) grossed almost $30m overseas, $7m of which in France. And the domestic-international ratio for You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010) stands at one to ten –$3m in the US, $31m abroad, with $7.4 m in France.
