• Small Time Crooks

  • TAKE the MONEY and RUN Woody Allen, 1969
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN Woody Allen, 1969 TRANSCRIPT NARRATOR On December 1st, 1935, Mrs. Williams Starkwell, the wife of a New Jersey handyman, gives birth to her first and only child. It is a boy, and they name it Virgil. He is an exceptionally cute baby, with a sweet disposition. Before he is 25 years old, he will be wanted by police in six states, for assault, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a wart. Growing up in a slum neighbourhood where the crime rate is amongst the highest in the nation is not easy. Particularly for Virgil, who is small and frail compared to the other children. Virgil Starkwell attends this school, where he scores well on an IQ test, although his behaviour disturbs the teachers. We interviewed Mrs. Dorothy Lowry, a school teacher who remembers Virgil. DOROTHY LOWRY I remember one time, he stole a fountain pen. I didn't want to embarrass him. You know teachers have ways of doing things. So I said to the class. We will all close our eyes, and will the one who took the pen, please return it. Well, while our eyes were closed, he returned the pen. But he took the opportunity of feeling all the girls! Can I say feel? NARRATOR Spending most of his time in the streets, Virgil takes to crime at an early age. He is an immediate failure. He barely manages to escape with a gumball machine stuck on his hand. With both parents working to make ends meet, Virgil becomes closest to his grandfather, a 60-year-old German immigrant who takes the boy to movies and baseball games.

  • Moral Luck in the Films of Woody Allen
Moral Luck in the Films of Woody Allen By Ewa Mazierska Fall 2011 Issue of KINEMA MORAL LUCK IN THE FILMS OF WOODY ALLEN We happened to have won the war. But if we didn’t win the war, then history would be created differently. (Judah’s aunt in Crimes and Misdemeanors) The purpose of this essay is to discuss how moral issues are represented in two films of Woody Allen: Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Match Point (2005). My principal tool of analysis is the concept of ’moral luck’, elaborated in an essay of the same title by Bernard Williams (1929-2003) (see Williams 1981a), widely cited as the most important British moral philosopher of his time. I am using this concept because these two Allen films can serve as a perfect illustration of its validity or, conversely, because the idea ofmoralluck supports the way the director deploys moral problems in his films. My discussion will consist of three parts. In the first I will summarise Williams’ concept of moral luck. Inthe second I will apply it to the situations represented in Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point. Finally, I will attempt to contextualise Allen’s ethics, linking it to the ideology dominating in the West. The concept of moral luck In arguably his most influential essay, ’Moral luck’, Bernard Williams presents his views on the character of morality by contrasting them to Kantianism and, in a smaller measure, to Utilitarianism. Hence, in order to understand Williams’ concepts, we should begin by reconstructing his views on these two doctrines.

Episode 2 - Magic in the Moonlight (2014) MUSIC - You Do Something To Me by Leo Reisman And His Orchestra Introduction MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT is the 44th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 2014. It’s the 1920s and magician Stanley Crawford is asked by an old friend to help with a task. A rich family in the south of France is being swindled by a young clairvoyant. Stanley goes to investigate, but not everything is as it seems. Beautifully shot in the south of France, MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT is one of Allen’s light comedies with a deep heart. It’s an easy watch with all the lovely costumes and gorgeous back drop and charismatic movie stars. But there’s also a deeply philosophical point at the heart of it. And - I love this film. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast, from me, the creator of the Woody Allen Pages website. This week, episode two, we look at 2014’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT. We’ll look at how this film came to be. What I loved and what I didn’t love. And then some fun trivia about the film. Of course, spoilers are everywhere. Conception and story Allen’s career is really on a roll in the early 2010s. He had some of his best reviewed and financially successful films in a decade or two with 2011’s MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and 2013’s BLUE JASMINE. It coincided with a decade- long period of Allen making films mainly in Europe, leaving his bubble of New York, and breathing new life into his work.
