If the public in Russia, Europe and America of Music (1938), predicted that Rachmaninoff’s Third recognised his gifts in all three branches of the profession, Symphony would ‘prove as popular as Tchaikovsky’s Fifth’. he himself always regarded himself as a composer first If that has never really been the case, Wood’s further and foremost. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE “Sound Come-Unity”: Post-9/11 Brown and the Politics of Intercultural Improvisation A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music by Dhirendra Mikhail Panikker September 2019 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Deborah Wong, Chairperson Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley Dr. René T.A. Lysloff Dr. Liz Przybylski Copyright by Dhirendra Mikhail Panikker 2019 The Dissertation of Dhirendra Mikhail Panikker is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgments Writing can feel like a solitary pursuit. It is a form of intellectual labor that demands individual willpower and sheer mental grit. But like improvisation, it is also a fundamentally social act. Writing this dissertation has been a collaborative process emerging through countless interactions across musical, academic, and familial circles. This work exceeds my role as individual author. It is the creative product of many voices. First and foremost, I want to thank my advisor, Professor Deborah Wong. I can’t possibly express how much she has done for me. Deborah has helped deepen my critical and ethnographic chops through thoughtful guidance and collaborative study. She models the kind of engaged and political work we all should be doing as scholars. But it all of the unseen moments of selfless labor that defines her commitment as a mentor: countless letters of recommendations, conference paper coachings, last minute grant reminders. Deborah’s voice can be found across every page. I am indebted to the musicians without whom my dissertation would not be possible. Priya Gopal, Vijay Iyer, Amir ElSaffar, and Hafez Modirzadeh gave so much of their time and energy to this project.

FEBRUARY 19, 2020 CONTACT: STUART WOLFERMAN [email protected] 718-938-7679 Composer Robert Paterson celebrates 50th birthday with premieres and a new album The Four Seasons – Out April 24 This spring, the composer enjoys three Carnegie Hall performances, including two world premieres, and the culmination of his 20-year-long “Four Seasons” project. Spring 2020 marks a particularly busy and celebratory period for composer Robert Paterson. Called a “modern day master” by the New York Times, Paterson’s String Quartet No. 3 will be premiered at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall on March 5 by the Indianapolis String Quartet. On April 17, he celebrates his 50th birthday and the release of his 21-song Four Seasons project (out April 24 on Paterson’s American Modern Recordings). On May 6, the Oratorio Society of New York, under Kent Tritle, will perform Paterson’s Whitman’s America. Paterson’s ability to set text has been widely praised, with Gramophone stating that he “could probably set a telephone book to music and create something that captivates.” In The Four Seasons the composer has set the poems of Ann Stanford, Sharan Strange, Wallace Stevens, keep reading Dorothea Tanning, to name a few. The world premiere recording consists of four song-cycles (21 songs), written over the last 20 years, for four voice types (each representing a different season). The four singers on the album are soprano Marnie Breckenridge, mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert, tenor Alok Kumar, and bass-baritone David Neal. In 2014, the six Winter Songs were released as part of a broader collection.

  • St Luke Passion Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Netherlands Radio Choir National Youth Choir
World premiere JAMES MACMILLAN St Luke Passion Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Netherlands Radio Choir National Youth Choir Markus Stenz conductor Peter Dicke organ 1 JAMES MACMILLAN St Luke Passion Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Netherlands Radio Choir National Youth Choir Markus Stenz conductor Peter Dicke organ JAMES MACMILLLAN (B. 1959) A Passion by James MacMillan [1] Prelude 8:27 Following his sensational St John Passion (2007), the St Luke Passion is the [2] Chapter 22 32:45 second passion to be completed by the Scottish composer James MacMillan. [3] Chapter 23 25:30 MacMillan’s attachment to the story of the Passion stems directly from his [4] Postlude 6:17 deep-rooted Roman Catholic faith. The list of his works contains a range of vocal compositions that deal with the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ: from his music theatre work Visitatio Sepulchri for choir and chamber ensemble total time 73:03 (1993) and the cantata Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993) to the Tenebrae Responsories (2006) for eight-part a cappella choir. He regularly draws inspiration from the story of the Passion, even in his purely instrumental works. In the Fourteen Little Pictures for piano trio (1997), the composer’s starting point is the fourteen Stations of the Cross of Jesus. And the first two parts of his orchestral triptych Triduum, The World’s Ransoming and the Cello Concerto (1996), contain melodic material derived from the Gregorian liturgy for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. This catalogue backs up MacMillan’s comment in The Times newspaper to the effect that he regards the Crucifixion and Resurrection as ‘the most important days in the history of the world’.
