For instance, setting the over- whelming popularity of both writers during their lifetimes in contrast with the scant—though steadily growing—critical recognition accorded to Haywood in our time provides a succinct and vivid illustration of the vagaries of the literary canon. As can be guessed, the snakes and ladders in Defoe and Haywood’s game of fame had mostly to do with their gender, as well as with the genre of their most cele- brated productions. Ironically, however, for good or evil, their contemporaries tended to put both writers together in the same basket. While professional critics belittled their talents in public—and perhaps envied them in private—the reading public seemed to have an insatiable appetite for their fictions. In short, Haywood and Defoe were fully-fledged popular novelists, with all the positive and negative con- notations attached to this label. A key to gauging their place in the history of the novel lies, then, in the type of readers for whom they vied. -

Chapter 2: Daniel Defoe [extract] Like the novelist and ex-convict Jeffrey Archer, Daniel Defoe’s career spanned both debt and high politics, authorship and imprisonment. Chronologically speaking, art followed life in Defoe’s career, since he began writing most of his works as an activist. In another sense, however, his life imitated his art, since it was a career quite sensationalist enough for one of his own novels. He was at various times a hosiery, wine and tobacco merchant, brick factory owner, political turncoat, underground political informant, secret government agent and spin doctor or state propagandist. He took part in an armed rebellion against James II, travelled extensively in Europe, and played a key role in the historic negotiations by which the kingdoms of England and Scotland were politically united. Defoe was bankrupted more than once, imprisoned for debt, and sentenced to stand in the pillory on a charge of sedition for publishing a satirical pamphlet. He later wrote a ‘Hymn to the Pillory’, as well as publishing a ‘Hymn to the Mob’ in which, scandalously, he praised the mob for its soundness of judgement. -

However, not every English-speaking person can provide the name of the creator of this famous character, although Daniel Defoe is a name most of them have heard at one time or another. Though not so well-known to the average citizen of the twentieth century, Daniel Defoe was one of the most prolific writers of his own century. His works make up "perhaps the most voluminous body of writing by an English author. Hitherto, The Cambridge Bibliography 2l English Literature (II, 496) has given the count of Defoe's writings, including periodicals, at 'over 400."'* William Lee, in his biography of Defoe in 1869, gave the author credit for 250 works, although he admits that "no one would be so insane as to read all of Defoe's two hundred and fifty odd works. -

The heroine herself seems to enjoy rather than regrets the many drawbacks and misdeeds she indulges in by describing them at great length and with great gusto. This article studies the default lines of Roxana’s confession beyond the Puritan perspective by exploring the manner in which Roxana’s ambiguous re-telling hovers between qualification and pleasure. Introduction Daniel Defoe is well-known for his Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719—we are celebrating in 2019 the 300th anniversary of its publication—but he was an extremely prolific writer. In addition to a number of novels, which include Roxana, he also wrote poems, essays, pamphlets, and journal articles, and he edited a number of newspapers. His total output is so huge that some of the works which are attributed to him are still a matter of debate among scholars today. -
