Parks in Slovenia MOP-GB 7/7/05 7:58 Page 1 “Owing to its exceptional natural diversity and natural values, Slovenia is no doubt a true jewel of Europe and one of the most remarkable countries in the world, which may already in the very near future become one of its most valuable resources.” (Narcis MR[I^: Biotic Diversity in Slovenia: Slovenia - the “hot spot” of Europe) 2004 PARKS IN SLOVENIA Slovenia is one of the countries with the highest biodiversity in the European Union. About 11% of the territory of Slovenia is protected under various protective regimes. Protection of areas of exceptional value has been known for centuries and has remained the most commonly used measure in nature conservation practice to date. Owing to their traditional role in the system of integral nature protection, parks are becoming increasingly important for the conservation of biotic and landscape diversity. In 1924, when National park was established in the Triglav Lakes Valley, Slovenia became the fifth country in Europe to have a national park. At present, there are 44 parks in Slovenia: one national park, three regional parks and 40 landscape parks. Prehistoric settlements were built on marshland, a Roman town was built on the first river terrace of the Ljubljanica River, and in the Middle Ages a town was built in a strategic position between the Lju- bljanica River and Castle Hill. The modern city absorbed all usable space between the nearby hills. This paper reviews some relief features in Ljubljana, their influence on the city’s spatial development, and urban geoheritage. The results indicate new possibilities for urban geoheritage tourism in the Slovenian capital and its surroundings. Fotografi ja: France Stele ACTA TRIGLAVENSIA ZNANSTVENO IZOBRAŽEVALNI CˇASOPIS LETO VI DECEMBER 2018 6 2 3 6 ACTA TRIGLAVENSIA Uvodnik ARHEOLOGIJA VISOKO V GORAH Osrednja tema nove številke znanstveno izobraževalnega časopisa Acta triglavensia je arheologija, ki predstavlja dokaj skrit, vendar pomemben del kulturne in zgodovinske dediščine Triglavskega narodnega parka. • The British, Kugy, and Western Slovenia
182 The British, Kugy, and Western Slovenia Ksenija Rozman Plates 69-72 The Julian Alps, the Sava valley, the surroundings of the lakes at Bled and Bohin;, Lake Cerknica, the city of Ljubljana and the Postojna caves are areas which the British have been visiting for centuries-fust as scientists, later also as travellers and mountaineers, and today mainly as tourists. All these areas are readily accessible by organized motor co'ach tours which start from Bled, Bohinj and Kran;ska gora. This territory, once part of the multi-national Austrian empire, now is the western part of the republic of Slovenia, one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia. The highest mountain in Yugoslavia, Triglav (2863m), lies in Slovenia. Dr Julius Kugy once asked France Avein, the Slovenian moun taineer, climber and professor of electrical engineering, what part of the Julian Alps he liked the best. Avein decided on the western Julian Alps, but Kugy demurred; 'That's all right, my dear Avein, it's beautiful! But the eastern part has the Triglav. The Triglav is not a mountain, the Triglav is a realm.'l Forests, mountains, mountain flora, meadows, rivers and lakes are all naturally constituent parts of the globe-but so many prominent Britons have wri~ten so much in praise of Slovenia and its people that even the best educated European could hardly fail to take heed and to be flattered. Sir Humphry Davy, and after him Josiah Gilbert and GC Churchill thought that the valley of the Sava river was the most beautiful valley in Europe.

UNIVERZA V LJUBLJANI FAKULTETA ZA DRUŽBENE VEDE Urša Tekavec Cerkniško jezero skozi čas Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2010 UNIVERZA V LJUBLJANI FAKULTETA ZA DRUŽBENE VEDE Urša Tekavec Mentor: doc. dr. Pavel Gantar Cerkniško jezero skozi čas Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2010 ZAHVALA Najlepša hvala mami in očetu, ki sta mi omogočila študij in mi ves čas stala ob strani. Lake Cerknica through time The intermittent Lake Cerknica is undoubtedly one of the most interesting karst phenomena that has always attracted the interest of many visitors and researchers.

At the same time, a growing appreciation of regional issues has raised interest in regional differences in each of these countries. This volume of the “Portrait of the Regions” series responds to this need and follows on in a tradition which has seen four volumes devoted to the current Member States, a fifth to Hungary, a sixth volume dedicated to the Czech Republic and Poland, a seventh to the Slovak Republic and the most recent volume covering the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Examining the 12 statistical regions of Slovenia, this ninth volume in the series has an almost identical structure to Volume 8, itself very similar to earlier publications.
