Prehistoric settlements were built on marshland, a Roman town was built on the first river terrace of the Ljubljanica River, and in the Middle Ages a town was built in a strategic position between the Lju- bljanica River and Castle Hill. The modern city absorbed all usable space between the nearby hills. This paper reviews some relief features in Ljubljana, their influence on the city’s spatial development, and urban geoheritage. The results indicate new possibilities for urban geoheritage tourism in the Slovenian capital and its surroundings. Two large-scale depositional Hudson Bay, releasing vast numbers of ice- systems resulting from this drainage, one mud dominated and the other sand bergs from the Hudson Strait ice stream in dominated, are juxtaposed. The mud-dominated system is associated with the short time spans. The repeat interval was meandering NAMOC, whereas the sand-dominated one forms a giant submarine on the order of 104 yr. These dramatic ice- braid plain, which onlaps the eastern NAMOC levee. This dichotomy is the result of rafting events, named Heinrich events grain-size separation on an enormous scale, induced by ice-margin sifting off the (Broecker et al., 1992), occurred through- Hudson Strait outlet. -

Fotografi ja: France Stele ACTA TRIGLAVENSIA ZNANSTVENO IZOBRAŽEVALNI CˇASOPIS LETO VI DECEMBER 2018 6 2 3 6 ACTA TRIGLAVENSIA Uvodnik ARHEOLOGIJA VISOKO V GORAH Osrednja tema nove številke znanstveno izobraževalnega časopisa Acta triglavensia je arheologija, ki predstavlja dokaj skrit, vendar pomemben del kulturne in zgodovinske dediščine Triglavskega narodnega parka. Avtor Janez Bizjak, ki je sam ali s prijatelji odkril veliko večino arheoloških najdišč v visokogorju, orje ledino novega področja raziskav. Čeprav arheološke najdbe kažejo navzočnost ljudi v visokogorju že od davnine, ostajajo nerešena številna temeljna vprašanja: kdo so bili ti ljudje, kje so se zadrževali in v katerem času, kako so bivali in, najpomembnejše, kaj jih je vodilo v gore. Naučili smo se poiskati točke, kjer so stala preprosta bivališča, ali pa so si popotniki zgolj poiskali zavetje. Po značilnih predmetih in analizah radioaktivnega oglja lahko določimo, iz katerega časa so osta nki. Mnogo teže pa je ugotoviti, kaj so ljudje počeli v gorah. Losovo okostje s Soriške planine iz tretjega do petega stoletja, ki ga je poškodovalo železno orožje, je sled lova. Dragoceni predmeti, skriti pod kamni, morda pričajo o zaobljubnih darovih silam narave. Začetke planšarskega gospodarstva je mogoče ugotavljati na podlagi kemičnih sledi mlečnih maščob na odlomkih lončenine. Sprašujemo se, kako razbrati sledi prvih rudarjev. Višine in strmine torej niso bile nikoli nepremagljive ovire, pa čeprav so jih prestopali zgolj izkušeni posamezniki ali manjše skupine. Based on magnetostratigraphy, 14C ages and 230Th-231Pa excess extinction ages in a series of sedimentary cores raised from the Mendeleev and Lomonosov ridges by the R/V Polarstern, Healy and MV Xue Long ice-breakers, with chronological complementary information from pre-2000 studies, we have been able to estimate sedimentation rates ranging from less than a few mm/ka to a few cm/ka along these ridges, with the highest accumulation rates eastward, near the ice-factories of the Russian shelf. -

HAMISH BROWN Climbing in the Atlas Mountains A Survey (Plates 24-27) magine a country with eighty per cent sunshine throughout the year, I grand mountain scenery, its rock climbing potential barely touched, all within easy reach, with no political hassles orcostly fees, and a lovely people. It may sound too good to be true but it all exists in Europe's nearest truly exotic foreign country: Morocco. The Atlas Mountains, which sweep across from north-east to south-west, separating 'the desert and the sown', offer a climber's paradise. Quite why the Atlas has suffered neglect by climbers from Britain is hard to understand. Perhaps the names are too difficult - there's no kudos in reporting unpronounceable climbs - or the information is hidden away in French publications. 1 Time the cat escaped from out of the bag. I spent a winter in the Atlas in 1965 and repeated this delight in 1966. Having gone there specifically to climb (Notes in AJ 1966) I ended simply hooked on the whole Atlas ambience and began to wander rather than be restricted to one area. The natural outcome of this was an end-to-end trek 2 in 1995 : 96 days, 900 miles and about 30 peaks bagged. Farfrom rounding off my knowledge, the trip introduced me to a score of new worthy areas to visit and I've had five Atlas months every year since. 3 The scope for climbing is vast. The country must have 50 limestone gorges, miles long and up to 2000 feet deep, each ofwhich would fill volumes ofclimbs if located in Europe, while on the mountains there are crests to be traversed and notable granite faces still virgin. -
