Philippine Species of Mesocyclops (Crustacea: Copepoda) as a Biological Control Agent of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) Cecilia Mejica Panogadia-Reyes*#, Estrella Irlandez Cruz** and Soledad Lopez Bautista*** *Department of Biology, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Ermita, Manila, MM, Philippines **Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Alabang, Muntinlupa, MM, Philippines ***Department of Medical Technology, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Ermita, Manila, MM, Philippines Abstract The predatory capacity of two local populations of Mesocyclops aspericornis (Daday) and Mesocyclops ogunnus species were evaluated, for the first time in the Philippines, as a biological control agent for Aedes aegypti (L) mosquitoes. Under laboratory conditions, Mesocyclops attacked the mosquito first instar larvae by the tail, side and head. The mean of first instar larvae consumed by M. aspericornis and M. ogunnus were 23.96 and 15.00, respectively. An analysis of the variance showed that there was a highly significant difference between the mean number of first instar mosquito larvae consumed by M. aspericornis and by M. ogunnus, which indicated that the former is a more efficient predator of dengue mosquito larvae. The results of the small-scale field trials showed that the mean number of surviving larvae in experimental drums was 63.10 and in control drums was 202.95. The Student t-test of means indicated that there was a significant difference between the mean number of surviving larvae in the drums with and without M. aspericornis. The findings indicated that M. aspericornis females were good biological control agents, for they destroyed/consumed about two-thirds of the wild dengue mosquito larvae population. THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE Vol. 62 MARCH, 1962 No. 2 THE EVOLUTION OF CRAYFISHES OF THE GENUS ORCONECTES SECTION LIMOSUS (CRUSTACEA: DECOPODA) RENDELL RHOADES Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 The earliest described crayfish species now included in the Section limosus of the Genus Orconectes was described by Samuel Constantine Rafinesque (1817: 42). He reported the species, which he named Astacus limosus, "in the muddy banks of the Delaware, near Philadelphia." How ironical it now seems, that when Rafinesque located at Transylvania three years later and traveled to Henderson, Kentucky, to visit a fellow naturalist, John J. Audubon, he could have collected from the streams of western Kentucky a crayfish that he might have identified as the species he had described from the Delaware. We now know that these streams of the knobstone and pennyroyal uplands are the home of parent stock of this group. Moreover, this parental population on the Cumberland Plateau is now separated from Rafinesque's Orconectes limosus of the Atlantic drainage by more than 500 miles of mountainous terrain. Even Rafinesque, with his flair for accuracy and vivid imagination, would have been taxed to explain this wide separation had he known it. A decade after the death of Rafinesque, Dr. W. T. Craige received a blind crayfish from Mammoth Cave. An announcement of the new crayfish, identi- fied as "Astacus bartonii (?)" appeared in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Science of Philadelphia (1842: 174-175). Within two years the impact of Dr. Craige's announcement was evidenced by numerous popular articles both here and abroad. -

Lodge, Director Graduate Program in Biological Sciences Notre Dame, Indiana August 2009 HUMAN-MEDIATED DISPERSAL OF AQUATIC NONINDIGENOUS SPECIES: IMPACTS AND INTERVENTIONS Abstract by John D. Rothlisberger The introduction and establishment of species beyond the boundaries of their native ranges is an environmental issue of increasing scope and seriousness. This dissertation examines the consequences of the establishment of aquatic nonindigenous species (NIS) in the Laurentian Great Lakes (GL) region and also investigates alternatives for reducing anthropogenic spread of nuisance aquatic NIS. I first investigate the pathways by which aquatic NIS are introduced to the GL to learn if introduction pathway is related to where species originate and how likely they are to have spread beyond the GL basin. My analysis shows that ballast water release is highly likely to introduce new aquatic NIS to North America, whereas unauthorized release of organisms in trade tends to introduce to the GL aquatic NIS already established in North America. Moreover, it appears that it is primarily a matter of time before novel NIS that become established in the GL appear in other North American waterways. I also consider the relationship between introduction pathway and species impacts, finding that John D. Rothlisberger there is an apparent relationship, but that further study of species-specific impacts is needed to verify this finding. Given the importance of ballast water release in bringing novel species to the GL, I use a novel technique to estimate the economic impacts in the region of ecological changes caused by populations of aquatic NIS introduced by this pathway. -

The results showed 148 spe- cies in the Neotropics, where 83 species were recorded in the northern region (above upon Equator) and 110 species in the southern region (below the Equator). Species richness and endemism are related more to the number of specialists than to environmental complexity. New researcher should be made on to the Copepod taxonomy and the and new skills utilized to solve the main questions on the true distributions and Cyclopoida diversity patterns in the Neotropics. A riqueza de espécies e o endemismo estiveram relacionados mais com o número de especialistas do que com a complexidade ambiental. Novos especialistas devem ser formados em taxo- nomia de Copepoda e utilizar novas ferramentas para resolver as questões sobre a real distribuição e os padrões de diversidade dos Copepoda Cyclopoida nos Neotrópicos. -

Zoological Studies 49(1): 28-38. Morphological changes associated with form alternations in the male spiny-cheek crayfish Orconectes limosus are described with new findings and explanations of existing equivocalness. Males were observed for 10 mo (from Feb. to Nov. 2008). Most males (84.4%) underwent 2 molts, with a 1 mo interval between molts. A small proportion (8.9%) (with a higher initial size than those that molted twice) molted once, without a form alternation. A smaller proportion (6.7%) (with a higher initial size than those that molted either once or twice) did not molt at all. Molting began after water temperatures were at least 16°C for 2 mo. Form I gonopods were longer, wider, and more robust than form II gonopods, which were similar to those of juveniles, in addition to possessing wider protopodites and shorter endopodites. Chelae of form I males were longer and wider than those in form II males. Juveniles had shorter and narrower chelae. The chelae and abdomen of form I males were more robust than those of form II males and juveniles, which did not differ. -
