Lock #2: Decipher the Semaphore Code Flag semaphore originated in 1866 as a handheld version of the optical telegraph system. Flag semaphore provided an easy method of communicating ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore when the distances were not too great. Page 2 Semaphore signaling was practiced extensively by Girl Guides in the 1940s, so they would be ready to signal emergency messages to their community in time of war. You could get a badge for semaphore. To earn the badge, you had to be able to signal twelve words a minute! The Guides of the 1940s would practice to waltz music. If you can hum the Blue Danube Waltz, imagine having to change letters on every downbeat. That would take a lot of practice! Click on the lock #2 at the bottom of the back to start the activity. Make sure to download the semaphore legend underneath the lock as well. If a printer is available, you can print the Semaphore Decoder Activity and complete it using a pencil to fill in the letters. If not, you can just as easily complete the activity in your browser window. There are small blue boxes underneath each flag signal. By click these, you can type the corresponding letter or number. Every different flag position corresponds to a letter, number, or command. Use the legend as your guide to determine the Ontario Council themed word or phrase spelled out by each set of flags.
