  • ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. The female audience will be exposed to a more accurate portrayal of women to which they can relate and be inspired. Copyright © 2014 by Miranda B. Leddy All rights reserved TABLE OF CONTENTS Tables

  • Theology of Supernatural
religions Article Theology of Supernatural Pavel Nosachev School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies, HSE University, 101000 Moscow, Russia; [email protected] Received: 15 October 2020; Accepted: 1 December 2020; Published: 4 December 2020 Abstract: The main research issues of the article are the determination of the genesis of theology created in Supernatural and the understanding of ways in which this show transforms a traditional Christian theological narrative. The methodological framework of the article, on the one hand, is the theory of the occulture (C. Partridge), and on the other, the narrative theory proposed in U. Eco’s semiotic model. C. Partridge successfully described modern religious popular culture as a coexistence of abstract Eastern good (the idea of the transcendent Absolute, self-spirituality) and Western personified evil. The ideal confirmation of this thesis is Supernatural, since it was the bricolage game with images of Christian evil that became the cornerstone of its popularity. In the 15 seasons of its existence, Supernatural, conceived as a story of two evil-hunting brothers wrapped in a collection of urban legends, has turned into a global panorama of world demonology while touching on the nature of evil, the world order, theodicy, the image of God, etc. In fact, this show creates a new demonology, angelology, and eschatology. The article states that the narrative topics of Supernatural are based on two themes, i.e., the theology of the spiritual war of the third wave of charismatic Protestantism and the occult outlooks derived from Emmanuel Swedenborg’s system. The main topic of this article is the role of monotheistic mythology in Supernatural.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by SHAREOK repository “Let’s Go Gank Ourselves a Paris Hilton”: A Textual Analysis of the Dialogue of Supernatural (the First 10 Years) Liorah Golomb It may seem counterintuitive to examine an audiovisual medium through its dialogue alone, but some linguists have been doing just that. Using a freeware concordance toolkit and other computer programs, I analyzed the dialogue of the first 10 seasons of the American television program Supernatural (2005-present) through several facets in an attempt to demonstrate originality, variety, and how language contributes to character individuation.1 Using fan-made transcripts, I created three main corpora for the study: the SPN Corpus, which includes all dialogue from the first 218 episodes, and the DEAN and SAM Corpora, comprised of all of the dialogue of each of the two main characters. The SUBTLEXUS corpus of American film and television dialogue was used as a reference corpus. A sampling of Supernatural episodes was also compared to that of other contemporary genre shows. Background: Why Supernatural “Supernatural has everything. Life. Death. Resurrection. Redemption. But above all, family.” (Calliope, Supernatural episode 10.05, “Fan Fiction”) To give the barest of summaries, Supernatural is an American television show about two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester (played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, respectively), who were raised as hunters of supernatural beings. Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural has 1 Generally, episodes referenced in this paper are identified only by season and episode number within the season, so 5.22 refers to the twenty-second episode of the fifth season.

  • Supernatural' As a Masculine Narrative
NO CHICK FLICK MOMENTS: 'SUPERNATURAL' AS A MASCULINE NARRATIVE April R. Boggs A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2009 Committee: Esther Clinton, Advisor Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor ii ABSTRACT Esther Clinton, Advisor This thesis examines the CW Network series Supernatural (hereafter SPN) as a revitalized masculine text. SPN as a masculine narrative is representative of 21st century conceptions of gender. Part of why it succeeds on the CW (a network aimed at 18 to 34-year-old women) is because it does not adhere to stringent binary thinking on gender. The show has only two main characters, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, both of whom are meant to be all- American blue collar heroes. Though they are based in this traditional masculine image what sets the brothers apart is the way SPN has updated this very image to apply to contemporary mores. The first chapter examines the brothers’ roots in traditional heroic masculinity, applying a structuralist method of analysis to determine the heroic and narrative forms being used. Axel Olrik’s Epic Laws of Folk Narrative establish the dual-hero narrative tradition from which SPN is derived. Next, I dissect each brother’s individual narrative, utilizing Jan de Vries’ classical hero pattern for Sam and my own traits of the “new American folk hero” for Dean. Continuing in my effort to link the brothers to their traditional roots, I use examples from both folk and popular culture to show the progression of the two hero types in American culture.

  • Supernatural
“Why Would Anyone Want to Watch Our Lives?”: Dean as Fanboy and the Metatextual Mediation of Fan Desire in Supernatural During the 2012 ―Salute to Supernatural‖ convention in Dallas, TX, actor Jensen Ackles (who plays Dean Winchester on the series) answered a fan‘s light-hearted question by turning it back on her, asking her ―What would you do for a Klondike bar?‖ Her response was immediate: ―You.‖ Instead of responding verbally, Ackles shook his head, dropped his face into his hands, and left the stage for a moment, while the audience of roughly 1,000 people, mostly female, howled in laughter. This particular incident illustrates an issue that is, while not unique to Supernatural, particularly pertinent to the series—a show in which, as Lynn Zubernis and Katherine Larsen note, ―fan practices are incorporated into the show itself and canon and ‗fanon‘ live side by side‖ (3). Supernatural has an exceptionally active fan base—one which the series often acknowledges by engaging in metatextual conversations with fans. With episode titles like ―Slash Fiction‖ and episodes that involve brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester meeting the ―author‖ of their lives—a ―prophet‖ who makes his living writing and selling the visions he has of the brothers‘ adventures in monster hunting—the show‘s writers overtly acknowledge fan-produced literature (like Sam/Dean ―Wincest‖ slash fiction or less sexually charged spin-off novels). Zubernis and Larsen note that ―much of the focus of fan studies has been on what happens when fans appropriate the role of producer, taking media properties and using them to create fan The Phoenix Papers, Vol.

P a g e | 155 http://jrmdc.com “You’re My True Vessel”1 Knowledge and Digital Fan Culture Discussed on the Basis of Mediumship and Possession in Supernatural’s Narrative and Fandom2 Lisa Kienzl University of Graz Abstract Portrayals of mediumship in modern Western television narratives need to be seen as part of a broader phenomenon of the presence of religious elements in Western media, a phenomenon I argue expresses a longing for grand narratives in contemporary Western society. The portrayal and mediatization of religious elements in television narratives as well as their discussion in digital fan culture are part of what I would call a transformation process of knowledge and in particular knowledge of religious phenomena. More specifically, digital fan culture allows for an engagement with discursive transformation processes of knowledge and thus influences what is perceived as knowledge in society. Therefore, religious studies needs to pay closer attention to television narratives and the way fans interact with these narratives to create knowledge about religious practices. This article focuses on how the elements of “possession” and “mediumship” are being transformed by the US American TV series Supernatural and its fan culture. I argue that we can see at least two transformation processes here: the transformation and transplantation of religious concepts and practices (in the case of this article the idea of the human body as spirit medium) into a television context, and the transformation of these concepts and practices through digital fan culture. In its discussion of fan culture, the article looks at and analyzes fan based websites and how they present, discuss and imagine the body-medium.

I adopt an interdisciplinary approach, applying theoretical and methodological concepts from both film studies and audience studies, in order to develop a new model through which to study media texts and fans. I apply this model to an analysis of female characters in the television program Supernatural and to self-identified female fans of Supernatural . Throughout the paper, I contend that such an interdisciplinary model is necessary for understanding media texts and audiences, and I conclude that media fans act as academics in their reading and interpretation of media texts.
