The show will feature an extensive group of the artist’s sculptural wall reliefs and works on paper from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s in what will be the first significant presentation of the artist’s work in America in over a decade. Regarded as one of the most important Dutch artists of the late twentieth century, Schoonhoven is recognized for his innovative and systematic investigations into light, form, and volume. Despite spending the majority of his life in Delft, the Netherlands, where he worked from 1946 to 1979 as a civil servant for the Dutch Postal Service, Schoonhoven rose to artistic prominence as an active and influential member of the international avant garde. Beginning in the 1950s, he played a central role in the Nederlandse Informele Groep (Netherlandish Informal Group) and the Nul-groep (Nul Group)—which were affiliated with the European Informel movement and the ZERO Group respectively. Rejecting illusionism and subjective expression, these artists shared a collective interest in exploring the essential, objective forms and properties of art. Schoonhoven in particular developed a highly unique body of work that centered on a sustained investigation of serial abstraction, the monochrome, and the grid.

Niet door overal hetzelfde te doen, maar door aan te sluiten op de kernkwaliteiten die de kern uniek en bijzonder maakt. Halverwege 2015 heeft het College van burgemeester en wethouders het startschot gegeven voor het ontwikkelen van een breed gedragen visie op de kernen en daarop te baseren Kernenbeleid. Vanaf dat moment is een zeer inspirerend proces gaan lopen. In alle kernen hebben zinvolle bijeenkomsten met veel betrokken inwoners en onder- nemers plaatsgevonden. Wij hebben in alle bezochte kernen de vraag vanuit verschillende invalshoeken besproken: wat maakt deze kern uniek? En zijn op zoek gegaan naar de kracht van de totale gemeenschap in de Krimpenerwaard; ‘wat bindt ons nu als Krimpenerwaard’? Er is zo in 2015 en 2016 door velen bijgedragen aan een gezamenlijke visie op de toekomst van de kernen in de Krimpenerwaard.

Utilizing a range of source material from American libraries, archives and his personal library, he has found that, with the maturing of the internet, much beneficial information relevant to New Netherland settlers is becoming available online to researchers through European archives. He lives in Kansas City, Missouri, where he works for a computer software company and is an avid researcher of New Netherland families and their European origins. Firth Haring Fabend, Ph. D., a historian specializing in the Dutch in New York and New Jersey, is the author of the prize-winning books A Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies, 1660-1800, and Zion on the Hudson: Dutch New York and New Jersey in the Age of Revivals, both published by Rutgers University Press, and many shorter works. Her most recent book is Land So Fair, a historical novel and family saga set in New York and New Jersey in the eighteenth century with flashbacks to New Netherland. Harry Macy Jr., edited The NYG&B Record from 1987 to 2006 and was also founding co-editor of The NYG&B Newsletter.     The Union of Utrecht: its Genesis and Consequences J.C. BOOGMAN In the hall where we are now assembled, the former chapter-hall of the cathedral, which has been serving for a long time now as auditorium for the University of Utrecht, the Union of Utrecht was founded on 23rd January 1579. Our congress on federalism has been organized, as you know, within the context of the com- memoration of the establishment of the Union four hundred years ago. It therefore seemed to me desirable, at the outset, to devote some attention to the origin of the league that was formed in this particular hall 'for all eternity'. Next, in the second part of my lecture, the functioning of the federal system of the Republic of the United Netherlands will be discussed. It seems to me all the more justified to devote some attention to the formation of the Union as it constituted the foundation of the federal incorporation of the seven provinces into the Repu­ blic of the United Netherlands. The young Pieter Paulus, who in the years 1775- 77 published a commentary on the Union which has since become famous, described it as the Bulwark of our Liberty, the joyous Mother of so many blessings, the Cultivator of the prestige of this Republic at the principal courts of Europe , and as base of that Pyramid, to which eminent men have compared this State.1 I The event which took place in this hall on 23rd January 1579 provides, however, despite the forceful chiming of the cathedral bells, a considerably less impressive picture (a picture which was otherwise in perfect harmony with the most salient feature of the revolt: the civil war aspect).
