U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Southwest Region, Albuquerque, New Mexico. 65 pp. + 2 appendices. i Tobusch Fishhook Cactus Species Status Assessment - Final EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tobusch fishhook cactus is a small cactus, with curved “fishhook” spines, that is endemic to the Edwards Plateau of Texas. It was federally listed as endangered on November 7, 1979 (44 FR 64736) as Ancistrocactus tobuschii. At that time, fewer than 200 individuals had been documented from 4 sites. Tobusch fishhook cactus is now confirmed in 8 central Texas counties: Bandera, Edwards, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, Real, Uvalde, and Val Verde. In recent years, over 4,000 individuals have been documented in surveys and monitoring plots. Recent phylogenetic evidence supports classifying Tobusch fishhook cactus as Sclerocactus brevihamatus ssp. tobuschii. It is distinguished morphologically from its closest relative, S. brevihamatus ssp. brevihamatus, on the basis of yellow versus pink- or brown-tinged flowers, fewer radial spines, and fewer ribs. Additionally, subspecies tobuschii is endemic to limestone outcrops of the Edwards Plateau, while subspecies brevihamatus occurs in alluvial soils in the Tamaulipan Shrublands and Chihuahuan Desert. A recent investigation found genetic divergence between the two subspecies, although they may interact genetically in a narrow area where their ranges overlap. -

San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society Cactus of the Month June 2001 – Turbinicarpus Turbinicarpus is a small genus of small plants from Northeastern and Central Mexico. It is one of several closely related genera, Neolloydia, and Gymno-cactus, and Strombocactus being the ones most frequently mentioned. In many books, the plants listed below will appear as either Neolloydia or Gymnocactus. The exact relation of these genera is still being worked out. New species have been discovered and named in the past decade; seeds and plants of these are just becoming available. All of the Turbinicarpus species are worth growing. They are small, most full-sized in collections at an inch or two. A few will clump readily, and make impressive show specimens, but still remain manageable. A collection of all the species and varieties could easily fit on a table top. Figure Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus Turbinicarpus are fairly easy to grow, if attention is paid to their life cycle. They are dormant in winter, from November through mid-March. As they begin growth, watering has to start slowly. Cactus & Succulent Society of San Jose Annual Show Show Rules and Categories THE PURPOSES OF THE SHOW ARE 1. To introduce our hobby to the general public by showing as many outstanding plants as possible. 2. To give our members a forum in which to show their plants. 3. To compete in an informal and friendly atmosphere. EXHIBITOR CLASSIFICATIONS This is a local show and as such is limited to those members and exhibitors residing within a two hundred mile radius of San Jose. NOVICE: If you are under 18, have not won a total of 50 first place ribbons in previous CSSA affiliated shows, or have been competing for less than 5 years in CSSA-affiliated shows, you may exhibit in this class. ADVANCED: You must exhibit in this class if you no longer qualify for the above class. OPEN: If you possess or have possessed a nurseryman's license, or earn a substantial income from the sale of plants, you must exhibit in this class. These classes are lower limits - anyone may move up. If you feel you have been unfairly advanced you may appeal to the Board of Directors for classification in a lower category. Family members, except children under 18, must show in the same class. Classes apply to Divisions I to IV only. Divisions V and VI will be judged in a single open class. SHOW RULES 1. You must own the plants you exhibit for at least six months, except displays. 2. Vendors who sell at the show must exhibit at least 10 plants in the show. -

These phylogenies sample 666 plants representing 532 of the 1438 species recognized in the family. All four subfamilies, all nine tribes, and 69% of currently recognized genera of Cactaceae are sampled. We found strong support for three of the four currently recognized subfamilies, although
