The Parkes Institute for the study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations Annual Review 2015 - 2016 In summer 2016, Kathrin Pieren and Tony Kushner organised the first Parkes International Workshop on 1 Jewish Heritage, generously supported by the Rothschild Foundation Europe (Hanadiv). See page 13 for the full report. Here, the value of the hand-in-hand of museum work and academic research was illustrated by the excellent talk by Dr Alla Sokolova, Curator at the State Museum of the History Religions in St Petersburg and Lecturer at the European University of St Petersburg. She presented the results of a field study related to an exhibition of Jewish family heirlooms that she organised a few years ago. The exhibits, many of them everyday items such as photographs or pieces of clothing, were charged with meaning by the lenders, Jewish individuals, some of whom are shown in the pictures on this page. 3 3 4 7 2 1. A Jewish-German Alliance for Europe’s Future Rabbi Julia Neuberger When my mother was dying, five years ago, she kept talking about going home. "Mummy, you are home..." I said, as she lay dying in her apartment in London. "Ach, no", she said, "I mean home, I mean Heilbronn." She may have left Heilbronn am Neckar sixty-four years earlier, and returned only once since the war, but it was still home. And as her school friends came one by one in her last years to see her from Heilbronn, and as she recalled the great kindnesses done for her parents after they had left, she felt homesick. For, quite unlike the norm, all her father"s friends – who had been with him in prisoner-of-war camp in France in the first world war – had gone into their apartment, packed everything up, and sent it to England. After my grandparents had settled in temporary accommodation in London, they were surprised to receive, even after the start of the war, packages and large containers of furniture sent by grandfather"s old friends and drinking companions. These men were no Nazis, but old friends who were appalled by the turn of events, and remained friends of my grandparents until the end of their lives. -

Rabbinic Statement on the Mosque Burning in Israel כי ביתי בית תפילה יקרא לכל העמים My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples As religious leaders and representatives of Jewish houses of worship around the world, we wish to express our deep sadness and outrage at the desecration of a mosque in the Bedouin village of Tuba-Zangariya in the north of Israel. We condemn this act as an affront to G-d and to the values of our Torah. We extend a hand in friendship and solidarity to the leaders and residents of the town, a prayer for their safety and peace in the days to come, and a hope that those who perpetrated this despicable act will be brought to justice. We condemn those in Israel who exacerbate conflict and strife, and who insist that only one people or religion belongs to this land. We thank the Israeli leadership – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, the Chief Rabbis of Israel and others – who have spoken out forcefully against this incident. They have demonstrated the Jewish values woven into the very fabric of the State of Israel, whose Declaration of Independence guarantees that Israel will “safeguard the sanctity and inviolability of the shrines and Holy Places of all religions”. We are grateful for the actions of the many organizations and individuals in Israel who have already raised their voices on behalf of Israel’s highest and truest values. We urge them to continue to take a public stand for the values of pluralism and mutual respect, and against violence, exclusion and racism. -

Faith Leaders' Open Letter to the Prime Minister
http://interfaithrefugeeinitiative.org/ We are leaders from Britain’s major faiths: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian. All our faiths compel us to affirm the dignity of all human beings and to offer help to anyone in need. As people of faith, we call on your Government urgently to revise its policy towards refugees. The best of this country is represented by the generosity, kindness, solidarity and decency that Britain has at many times shown those fleeing persecution, even at times of far greater deprivation and difficulty than the present day. We rejoice in the mosaic of different faiths and British communities that we now represent. We are proud that in May 2016, in a survey by Amnesty International, 83% of Britons said they would welcome refugees into their neighbourhoods and households. In the face of the unfolding human catastrophe, there are immediate and viable steps that the Government can take to offer sanctuary to more refugees. We call on you to create safe, legal routes of travel, for example by adopting fair and humane family reunion policies for refugees. Under the present immigration rules, a British doctor of Syrian origin could not bring her parents from a refugee camp in Lebanon – even though they were refugees and she could support and house them. A Syrian child who arrived alone in the UK could not bring his parents from a refugee camp in Jordan – even if the child were recognised a refugee and even though his parents were themselves refugees. Families in these situations can currently be reunited only by resorting to desperately unsafe irregular journeys, sometimes ending in avoidable tragedies. -

‘TO GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE’ Kol Nidrey: there is no other moment that compares to the enveloping enchantment of this sacred service. From the first minutes of silence, accompanied only by the faint tinkling of the bells of the rimonim that adorn the Torah scrolls, through the haunting inflections of Kol Nidrey and the other special Yom Kippur melodies, to the rousing rendition of Avinu Malkeinu in front of the open Ark a few moments ago. Our gathering this evening, pulses with the accumulated heartbeats of all the generations, who went before us on our people’s annual sacred pilgrimage towards Atonement. And yet, we have not stepped back in time. The Hebrew date may be the same as the date first mentioned in the Torah: the 10th day of the seventh month,1 but the other calendar that regulates our lives tells us that today is the October 11, 2016. Of course, every generation of Jews throughout millennia has observed this sacred moment in the context of their own particular time and place. And so, like the generations before us, we have brought with us this evening, our experiences of the past year, and our memories of everything that has happened since we last gathered together on Kol Nidrey; the special moments and challenges, milestones and losses we have experienced and witnessed in our own personal lives, within our congregation, and our other communities, and in the wider society. So, how do we negotiate our lives as Jews in Britain in the 21st century for the sake of a Jewish future in this nexus between the complex legacies of the past we carry with us and the challenges of the present that confront us? As we ponder this question, let me take you back to a particular time in living memory and share with you the sermon delivered by Rabbi Dr Leo Baeck, the leader of German Jewry, on Kol Nidrey in Germany in 1935:2 In this hour all Israel stands before God, the judge and the forgiver. -
