PH: My name is Paul Henry, I am City Archivist for the City of Ottawa. OZ: Why was it important for the City of Ottawa Archives to acquire Barbara Ann Scott’s collection? PH: Uh, well the mandate of the City of Ottawa Archives is to document the corporation of the City of Ottawa as well as serve as a repository for records that would otherwise be lost to history; records that in particular tell the story of the individual contributions of notable citizens, organizations, businesses, community organizations, that have contributed to the fabric of Ottawa and which tell, essentially, the story of the gap between what the City does and what our known history of an area is. So, the private records really flush out and make interesting a story of Ottawa beyond its role as a nation‟s capital. The Barbara Ann Scott collection fulfills that in many ways. Barbara is our most decorated citizen, our most decorated Olympic athlete, and if you think back to those days in „47 and „48 when we had, and gave Barbara the key to the city and had events and parades in her honour. The number of people that came out in those days to celebrate her accomplishments was certainly something, and in many ways, the city, in some way belongs to Barbara.

    Andrée Grau: Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Andrée Grau Roehampton University, [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I address a number of topics relevant to anthropology generally and to the anthropology of dance specifically. I consider issues of classification and taxonomies; of interculturalism and transnationalism; of representation, exoticisation and internalised racism. I examine dance, hierarchies and discrimination, and discuss boundaries between dance and non-dance. For example, dance scholars, with a few exceptions, rarely write about figure skating, although it is cognate to Western theatre dance genres, especially ballet. Figure skating is sport, even in its ice dancing incarnation, whilst dance is art even in its ballet competition incarnations. I use as a case study the Russian skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who choreographed an ‘Australian Aboriginal Dance’ for their original routine for the 2010 European skating championships and Olympics. This offended Aboriginal elders who made a complaint to the Russian ambassador. I examine the controversy around the routine, how it was reported in the press and how the audience responded in Internet forums, focusing especially on the way Australian Aborigines con- tinue to be portrayed as stone age in popular media.     Stars and Stardom, the Liv Ulmann Conference Trondheim, December 10 – 11, 2008 Presentation by Mona Pedersen, Hedmark University College Sonja Henie, Norwegian Star in Hollywood The title “Norwegian star in Hollywood” indicates what I’d like to enlighten in my presentation; Henie as a Hollywood made Star; which elements constructs her star persona? I will also elaborate if or how national identity is portrayed in her films, and the Norwegian response to this. But first I will give you a short outline of Henie’s career. Sonja Henie was born in Oslo in 1912 and she died of leukaemia in 1969 – only 57 years old. According to the latest biography (Stenseth 2002) she had three careers in her relatively short life; first as a sports athlete from 1924 to 1936, second as a film star and entertainer from 1936 to 1960, and third as an art collector and keen lover of modern art the last nine years of her life. In 1936, Sonja Henie won her third Olympic Gold Medal and her tenth World Championship in a row in figure skating. She was 24 and world famous. Henie decided it was time to give up her sports career and pursue a career as a film actress. The strategy behind this change was put together with the help of her father Wilhelm who until his death in 1937 was his daughter’s manager.
