Parker Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute, University of Northern British Columbia, 3333 University Way, Prince George, British Columbia, Canada V2N 4Z9, email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Elk (Cervus elaphus) populations are increasing in the Besa-Prophet area of northern British Columbia, coinciding with the use of prescribed burns to increase quality of habitat for ungu- lates. Moose (Alces alces) and elk are now the 2 large-biomass species in this multi-ungulate, multi- predator system. Using global positioning satellite (GPS) collars on 14 female moose and 13 female elk, remote-sensing imagery of vegetation, and assessments of predation risk for wolves (Canis lupus) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), we examined habitat use and selection. Seasonal ranges were typi- cally smallest for moose during calving and for elk during winter and late winter. Both species used largest ranges in summer. Moose and elk moved to lower elevations from winter to late winter, but subsequent calving strategies differed. During calving, moose moved to lowest elevations of the year, whereas elk moved back to higher elevations. Moose generally selected for mid-elevations and against steep slopes; for Stunted spruce habitat in late winter; for Pine-spruce in summer; and for Subalpine during fall and winter. Most recorded moose locations were in Pine-spruce during late winter, calv- ing, and summer, and in Subalpine during fall and winter. -

LOCATION 2 GAME MANAGEMENT UNIT: 18 (41,159 mi ) GEOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION: Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta BACKGROUND NUNIVAK ISLAND Muskoxen were once widely distributed in northern and western Alaska but were extirpated by the middle or late 1800s. In 1929, with the support of the Alaska Territorial Legislature, the US Congress initiated a program to reintroduce muskoxen in Alaska. Thirty-one muskoxen were introduced from Greenland to Nunivak Island in Unit 18 during 1935–1936, as a first step toward reintroducing this species to Alaska. The Nunivak Island population grew slowly until approximately 1958 and then began a period of rapid growth. The first hunting season was opened in 1975, and the population has since fluctuated between 400 and 750 animals, exhibiting considerable reproductive potential, even under heavy harvest regimes. -

ARCTIC VOL. 43, NO. 3 (SEPTEMBER 1990) P. 231-238 Growth and Dispersal of an Erupting Large Herbivore Population in Northern Canada: The Mackenzie Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae) C.C. GATES' and N.C. LARTER' (Received 6 September 1989; accepted in revised form Il January 1990) ABSTRACT. In 1963,18 wood bison (Bison bison athabuscue)were introduced to the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary. Thepopulation has grown at a mean exponential rate of r = 0.215 f 0.007, reaching 1718 bison 2 10 months of age by April 1987. Analysis of annual population growth revealed a maximum exponential rateof r = 0.267 in 1975, followed by a declining rate, reaching a low value of r = 0.103 in 1987. Selective predation on calves was proposed as a mechanism to explain the declining rate of population growth. The area occupiedby the population increased at an exponential rate of0.228 f 0.017 km2.year". The dispersal ofmature males followed a pattern described as an innate process, while dispersal of females and juveniles exhibited characteristicsof pressure-threshold dispersal. Carpal bones of these animals are generally recovered in excellent condition but are rarely identified beyond the classification 1/small-sized artiodactyl." This guide, based on the analysis of over thirty modem specimens, is intended as an aid in the identifi cation of these remains for archaeological and biogeographical studies. RESUMEN.-Se han encontrado restos de antilopes, ciervos, cabras de las montanas rocosas, y de carneros cimarrones en sitios arqueol6gicos del oeste de Norte America. Huesos carpianos de estos animales se recuperan, por 10 general, en excelentes condiciones pero raramente son identificados mas alIa de la clasifi cacion "artiodactilos pequeno." A full-gro\-.'11 bull stands 5 to 6 feet at the shnul.1 r, is 9 to 9 1/2 feet long and can weigh more than 2,000 pounds. Full-grown cows are smaller, but have been known to weigh over 1 300 pounds. A bison's head and forequarters are so massive that they s~c~ out of proportion to their smaller hind parts. Bison have a hump formed by a gradual lengthening of the back, or dorsal vertebrae, begin ning just ahead of the hips and reaching its maximum height above the front shoulder. -

IRAFFE Pronghorn G TAG Why exhibit pronghorns? • Celebrate our local biodiversity by displaying the last surviving species of the Antilocapridae, a mammalian family endemic to North America. • Participate in a recovery program close to home: AZA maintains a priority insurance population of the critically endangered peninsular pronghorn. • Engage guests with these “antelope” from the familiar song “Home on the Range” (even though pronghorns aren’t true “antelope” at all!). • Let visitors get hands-on with the unusual horn sheaths of pronghorns - they are keratinous like horns, but are shed annually like antlers! • Seek partnerships with local running groups: pronghorn are the fastest land animals in North America, able to cover 6 miles in 9 minutes! • TAG Recommendation: Contact the SSP for guidance regarding which pronghorn program is best suited to your facility’s climate. Harem groups with a single male are typical. Bachelor groups may be successful in the absence of females. Mixed species: Pronghorn are frequently exhibited with bison. They have also been housed with camels, deer, cranes, and waterfowl. Housing: Peninsular pronghorn are heat tolerant and do well in windy conditions, but heated shelters recommended where temperatures fall below 40ºF for extended periods.
