5th Grade Students Vs Staff PICTURE RETAKE Basketball game NOVEMBER 15, 2016 Friday at 6:30pm at Aldercreek! November 2016 Page 2 of 6 Notes from the Music Room My name is Dave Noyes, I am the music specialist for Linwood Elementary. I am so excited to get to spend another year working with your amazing students on singing, playing instruments, movement, music literacy, and so much more!

Instrument Fund: We are working on building a set of Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels) that are used in every grade; primary students learn basic beat skills and mallet technique, while intermediate students will use these instruments to play melody lines as well as accompaniments to songs. Through a combination of grant writing, fundraising, and Linwood PTA support, we have acquired almost 30 instruments in the last four years. We still have a few more instruments to purchase before we meet the requirements for a standard music classroom (about $2,000 worth needed). If you would like to donate directly to our instrument fund, Laura Gumbert our student funds secretary can accept your donations in the Linwood office.

Student Performances: Every Linwood student will have the opportunity to perform at least one time during this school year. Here is what we have planned.

K-2 Winter Concert: Students in Estes, Carrera, Shanks, Nelson, Slyter, and McGraw’s classes. Thursday Dec. 8th – 1PM and 5:30PM (we perform twice) During our daytime performance, all students will sit with their classes. During our evening concert, KG students will sit with their parents after they get off stage. 1st and 2nd grade students will sit on the floor with their classes.

Audience Behavior: As a courtesy to all, we would like to remind the audience to please stay seated during the concert and stay out of the performance area. Cell phones should be silenced. Crying babies should be taken to the hallway. Please do not talk during the performance. Thank you in advance for making our concert enjoyable to all!

Concert and Event Parking: Parking at Linwood is very limited. Additional parking will be available at the Ukrainian Church (west of Linwood, behind our lot and field). Please consider carpooling. DO NOT BLOCK DRIVEWAYS AND PARK IN LEGAL SPACES ONLY.

5th Grade Mid-Year Concert: Thursday January 26th - 6:00PM 3rd Grade Musical Cooperation Concert: Friday March 6th – 8AM (during all-school assembly) Family Fun Dance Night: all Linwood students - Thursday April 9th – 4:30 (food), 5:30 (dance) 4th Grade Recorder Karate Concert: Thursday May 16th - 6:00PM 5th Grade Concert: Thursday June 8th – 6:00PM

Recorders: Students in the following classes will be working with recorders this year: DuVal, McGean, Hosman, Senger, Eguren, Miller, and Paschall. Every student in these classes needs to have their own recorder so they can rehearse at home. I am asking for five minutes of practice per day. Recorders are available through Linwood for $5. If your family cannot afford a recorder, please contact me so I can provide one for your student. Your family could also choose to purchase a recorder through a musical instrument store. Please do not purchase instruments from Dollar Tree, Fred Meyer, or similar retailers – these are toys, which are difficult to play well and tend to break easily.

Counselors Corner with Mr. W The leaves are turning, the weather is getting cold and wet, my Miami Dolphins are already out of the playoff hunt….it must be fall.

Welcome back to school everybody, (I did not have an article in the first newsletter so I’ll welcome you back now). This is the time of the year when I am working with all of our Kindy, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders on solving problems.

We are learning a program called Kelso Choices, which teaches our kids the difference between BIG problems that you need an adult to solve and small problems that we can solve on our own. Our kids learn about solutions to small problems, with the goal being that they can start to solve problems on their own, without tattling or arguing with others. Take some time and ask your kiddos about what we are doing and hopefully they can teach you some Kelso solutions!

I’m so looking forward to another great year with all of your amazing kids! November 2016 Page 5 of 6 Nurses Notes The school nurses would like to make all families aware that there are students in our school district with serious health conditions that cause them to have a compromised immune system. These are NOT contagious diseases, but ones that prevent these children from receiving all of their immunizations on time, making them more vulnerable to illnesses than the rest of our students. In addition, any illness or communicable disease they may contract can be much more serious for them.

You can help these students and our entire student body to stay healthy by keeping your child home when ill, and by contacting the school office right away if your child contracts any communicable diseases. This includes diseases such as Chicken Pox, Shingles, Measles, Fifth Disease, Whooping Cough and Mononucleosis.

Knowing about possible exposure to these diseases as soon as possible allows the families of children with compromised immune systems to seek immediate medical treatment for their child.

With your help, we can keep the school as healthy as possible. If you are ever unsure about keeping your child home, feel free to call the office for advice or check the North Clackamas School District Nurse’s website for our district’s policy about when to keep your child home. To access the Nurse’s website, please go to Departments, click on Nurses, then Notes from Nurses: When to Keep Your Child at Home.

Thanks for your understanding. Please call your school nurse if you have any questions or concerns.

ALL TREATMENT STEPS MUST BE DONE ON THE SAME DAY.

HOUSE TREATMENT:

1. Vacuum all carpets, floors, mattresses, furniture and the car. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag in the outside trash when finished. 2. Wash ALL clothing and bed linens in HOT water. 3. NON-WASHABLE items should be either: dry cleaned, placed in a HOT clothes dryer for 20 minutes (pillows, stuffed toys, etc.), placed in freezer for 48 hours, or sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days. 4. Treat ALL brushes and combs by boiling for 10 minutes OR soaking in lice shampoo for 10 minutes.

HAIR TREATMENT:

1. If using commercial lice hair products, treat all affected household members at the SAME TIME. Before application, wash hair with a basic perfume and conditioner free shampoo. 2. Comb hair thoroughly with a clean comb or brush. 3. Remove ALL NITS with a nit comb, fingernails, or tweezers to prevent REINFESTATION by any nits not killed by the medications. 4. Notify all people who have recently been in contact with the exposed household member. 5. Contact your physician, health department, or school nurse for further directions or advice.

SCHOOL NOTIFICATION:

PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU TREAT YOUR CHILD FOR HEAD LICE. This information is kept CONFIDENTIAL, but is important in tracking classroom cases to prevent further spread of head lice.
