ABSTRACT This paper reports on insect species not previously associated with cantharidin, the terpeooid defense mechanism of blister beetles (MeJoidae). Species from the following tau were obserYed and collected: Miridae (Hemiptera); Endomychidae, Pyrochroidae, .-\nthiLidae I Coleoptera); Ceratopogonidae, Sciaridae (Diptera); and Braconidae (Hymen optera;. In addition to listing the associations, a discussion of cantharidin orientation is presented along with preliminary hypotheses to explain these intriguing examples of coevolution . .-\ recent re,'jew (Young 1984) attempted to draw together all published associations between insect5 and cantharidin or the me10id beetles which are known to produce the compound. Plants of The Week » *Annual - Petunia (Petunia spp.) Many people are not fond of petunias because they are high maintenance - deadheading being the number 1 necessary task. Today's petunias are not your grandma's petunias. In fact, there have been such great strides in breeding that these petunias might just convince even the most die-hard, anti-petunia person to come back to the pro-petunia side! There are so many wonderful varieties on the market today that don't require deadheading and look fantastic all season, thriving until a hard frost. Field trials such as those at the Gateway Learning Gardens (OSU Extension office in Clark County), on OSU main campus, and at the Cincinnati Zoo all show top ratings for most petunia varieties. Some of the top performing varieties include: Surfinia, Supertunia, Wave, Cascadia, Madness, and many more. In fact, there are so many more that it becomes overwhelming when trying to select the best varieties. Check out field trial sites in order to see these plants and their growth habits and performance during the season. Once one sees these new varieties and how great they look with very little maintenance, they may become convinced that petunias are good. -

Literature citations are summarized for each of these taxa using current nomencla.tun: and indicating the nature of the association. \\rule re'.ie....ing literature pertinent to research on the systematics and bionomics of the genus Pedilu..s IColeoptera: Pyrochroidae), an intriguing association with a blister beetle I.\feloidael came to my attention. Most canthariphilous insects are found within the hetero meran beetle family Anthicidae with 190 species in the three subfamilies Anthicinae (184), Lemodiinae (1) and Tomoderinae (5). Further cantharidin baited species are known from the beetle families Endomychidae (5), Cleridae (4), Chrysomelidae (3), and Staphylinidae (1). In the beetle family Pyrochroidae 23 species from the subfamily Pedilinae and 6 species of the Pyrochroinae are canthariphilous. The insect order Diptera is represented by the families Anthomyiidae (3), Cecidomyidae (2), Ceratopogonidae (22) Chloro- pidae (1), Platystomatidae (1) and Sciaridae (5). Many species from the heteropteran family Miridae (29) are known to be attracted by cantharidin, also one species from the families Lygaeidae and Tingidae respectively. Parasites of the hymenopteran family Braconidae (6) show a positive reaction to cantharidin as well as species from the subfamily Diapriinae of the family Diapriidae. Chemical analyses of a fulgorid and a cicadid species revealed that also species of Homoptera may contain cantharidin. -

It is a timely book. In helping us combat our insect enemies it helps us produce more food, feed, fiber, and wood, all of which we need more than ever before. It is also a disturbing book—and that, to me, is one of its virtues. Although the science of entomology has made great progress in the past two decades, the problems caused by insects seem to be bigger than ever. We have more insect pests, although we have better insecticides to use against them and better ways to fight them. Effective though our quarantines are against for- eign pests, some of them are slipping through and require vigorous attention. Many aspects need to be considered in the control of insects. -

Most canthariphilous insects are found within the hetero- meran beetle family Anthicidae with 190 species in the three subfamilies Anthicinae (184), Lemodiinae (1) and Tomoderinae (5). Die meisten Cantharidin-abhängigen Insekten sind in der Käferfamilie Anthicidae mit 190 Arten in den drei Unterfamilien Anthicinae (184), Lemodiinae (1) und Tomoderinae (5) gefunden worden. Weitere Cantharidin-abhängige Arten sind bekannt aus den Käferfamilien Endomychidae (5), Cleridae (4), Chrysomelidae (3) und Staphylinidae (1). In der Familie Pyrochroidae sind 23 Arten aus der Unterfamilie Pedilinae und 6 Arten aus den Pyrochroinae Cantharidin-beeinflußt.
