Jeffrey Seller says, “The Bay Area has always been a special place for Hamilton after audiences embraced the launch of our first national tour. We are thrilled that Hamilton will reopen in San Francisco and play for four final weeks before continuing on as a west coast tour.” “There’s no clearer sign that San Francisco is coming back to life than seeing live performances returning to our stages. Everyone has sacrificed so much over the past year to keep each other safe, and that meant that we couldn’t enjoy the shows and events that make our city such a special place. Now, with case numbers low and our vaccination rate approaching 80%, we’re excited that Hamilton is coming back to the Orpheum Theatre for our residents and visitors to enjoy once again,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. Rainier Koeners, Managing Director of BroadwaySF says, “BroadwaySF is back, and we are thrilled that after a 17-month intermission, we’re not only reopening the Orpheum Theatre with Hamilton, but will also be the first Broadway Theatre in California to resume performances. Our plan is to open at 100% capacity, and we are working closely with the city of San Francisco to make sure our audience, actors, stagehands and ushers will safely return.” HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography. It has won Tony®, Grammy®, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. The HAMILTON creative team previously collaborated on the Tony Award®-Winning Best Musical In the Heights. • The Club Welcomed Broadway Producer Jeffrey Seller on Monday, May 7 for the 90Th Annual Dinner Meeting Celebrated at the Hilton Chicago Hotel
The Club welcomed Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller on Monday, May 7 for the 90th Annual Dinner Meeting celebrated at the Hilton Chicago Hotel. The evening started with retiring board member Jack Hartman presenting the Nominating Committee’s 2018-2019 slate of officers and directors of the Club, which members unanimously accepted. The program began with remarks from Mr. Seller – producer of Hamilton, Rent and Avenue Q, among many other shows– which detailed his career and the business of making musicals. Afterwards, Chair Mellody Hobson moderated a candid discussion that touched on topics including Mr. Seller’s path to Broadway, his process of creation, and future projects. The previous day, Mr. Seller and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the opening of Hamilton: The Exhibition, a traveling museum that will open in Chicago on Northerly Island in November. It will serve as an immersive exploration of the American Revolution through the perspective of Alexander Hamilton. In Mr. Seller’s eyes, Chicago is the ideal place to launch the museum. “Chicago embodies the intersection of civic stewardship, cultural engagement and capitalism that define American exceptionalism,” he said. “The Herculean efforts of the business and civic leaders that architects who dreamed up and built the Chicago’s World Fair in 1893 exemplified how a city can enrich the lives of citizens through entertainment, education and illumination. “ These kinds of strategic considerations are skills Mr. Seller honed over his 25-year storied career in theater. Given the role he plays in making artistic visions a reality, he emphasized two points. First, that commercial potential is impossible to predict, so he has only brought to stage art that he loves; and second, he is committed to expanding the demographics of Broadway.

  • AS YOU LIKE IT, the First Production of Our 50Th Anniversary Season, and the First Show in Our Shakespearean Act
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past.
