The following students worked happily during the day decorating Nick McLoughlin, Jey Rawlinson, Donna Smith, Zoe Nairne, Cassie Constable, Aggie Fedor, Kristen Hunt, Leanne Hobday and Jared Austin. The students who worked tirelessly on the evening gave up the opportunity to attend as guests and are to be congratulated on the wonderful job they did. Donna Smith, Sofya Hoole, Zoe Nairne, Connie Constable and Leanne Hobday are pictured above just before the evening began. Well done girls.

Special mention must also go to Liam Cronin (Year 7) who helped set up the P A system for the evening. Thank you Liam.

If this support and effort is an example of the spirit among the class of 2011 then Year 12 will be a successful year. On behalf of the Year 11 students I would like to thank those parents who helped with the decorating Kylie Austin, Cassie Constable and Di Inder and the parents who helped on the night, Kylie & Glen Austin, Anne Marie & Warwick Nairne, Cassie Constable and Carol McLoughlin. It is geared at helping support rural youth achieve their goals with respect to tertiary education. That education can involve TAFE, University or on the job training and the Foundation is there to provide financial support but also community support for the youth of Terri-anne McLoughin, Emily Wightman Kirsty our district. Currently only 16% of rural youth Inder and Jocellin Jansson (Executive Director access tertiary education whereas 27% of of Country Education Foundation) attending the youth in urban areas access tertiary training. Merriwa District Education Foundation luncheon This inequality is not justified and needs to be rectified if rural communities are to remain sustainable.

Any money donated to the Merriwa District Education Foundation is matched by the Country Education Foundation so we are able to make $1 into $2 and use the money to help students from our district achieve their tertiary goals. In turn some tertiary institutions match the grants given to students by their local foundations which helps to ease the financial pressures facing rural students who have to move away for tertiary study. It was Merriwa District Education Committee and some interesting to note that the success rate for of the 2010 grant recipients. We are currently helping five students in 2010 and have a number of applications for local students who wish to access tertiary education in 2011. If you would like to help please contact one of the committee members.

I would also like to thank Peter and Libbie Walker for holding the luncheon at their home and Cassie Porter for her wonderful catering efforts on the day.

At the risk of labouring the point I intend to write one or two further articles on the subject of carbon and the environment since, if the fears of so many are correct, and if we do nothing, it will prove the greatest crisis and calamity mankind has faced for many thousands of years, perhaps since the last great ice age, and including both world wars. Therefore the possible alternative carbon free, or partially carbon free, energy generation possibilities should be considered. We must accept that all these alternatives will be costly, and will be opposed by some, for reasons good and bad, including the NIMBYs ( a term now so well known it does not need explanation). Also, that the further we generate such power away from our main centres of population the more we will need massive and expensive power lines stretching across Australia to get the energy to where it is needed, and that many oppose, and have opposed in the past, such power lines.
