Some travel to get away from their daily lives, to relax and unwind. Some go in search of adventure, from mild to wild. Many, particularly mature travelers who make up the majority of our clientele, love to learn while they are traveling. It’s the moment when everything in your world aligns perfectly. At that moment, life feels perfect. You are looking at a spectacular monument to humanity or nature (think Crazy Horse), listening to an amazing speaker share experiences or just enjoying the moment so much you can’t imagine being in a better place. Those of us who strive to create those moments for you feel the same way you do when it happens. It can be as small as the feeling on the bus when it pulls through the entrance to Disneyland (yes, even older kids… wait especially older kids, really get excited and you can feel the excitement on the bus). We work really hard to create situations where those moments can happen, either for the group as described above, or for you personally. I’ve felt for many years that one of the quickest ways to a traveler’s heart is to recreate a piece of their childhood. Ship-breaking.com Information bulletins on ship demolition, # 8 - 11 from January 1, to December 31, 2007 Robin des Bois 2008 Press release January, 24th 2008 Global Statement 2007 of Shipping Vessels Sent to Demolition For the 2nd consecutive year, Robin des Bois has been studying in detail the reality of the ship breaking market. The mobilisation and the analysis of about thirty diverse and specialised bibliographical sources made it possible to establish an inventory of the vessels sent to be demolished in 2007. In 2006, Robin des Bois tallied 293 vessels sold for demolition. In 2007, we listed 288 of them. If this decline in demolished vessels is modest (-2%), it is a little more significant with regard to the total weight of recycled metals: 1.7 million ton in 2007 against 1.9 million in 2006 (-10%). The situation differs however according to the category of ships considered: the number of tankers (oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers) dismantled in 2007 increased by almost 30 % compared with 2006 whereas that of the bulk carriers and other general cargo ships decreased by almost 40 %; the average age of the tankers sent to demolition is 29 years, the average age for all the vessels is 31 years, the average age of bulk carriers 34 years. Of the 288 vessels, 95 (33 %) were under a European flag or belonged to ship-owners established in the European Union or members of the European Association of Free Exchange (EFTA) or members of the principalities like Monaco. Not one of the international exchanges linking these European ship-owners to non-European demolition sites were preceded by any asbestos removal.

The success of any U3A year, and the ‘gearing up’ process before the next one begins – the membership renewals process involves a great deal of work on the part of a team of office volunteers, and our Membership Secretary in particular – depend entirely on the willingness and commitment of the different teams of volunteers who make it all possible. So, it is appropriate for my open remark to be a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to all those of you who volunteer in any capacity and thereby keep our branch running.
