A Social History of Private Members’ Clubs in Colonial Kenya This thesis explores the institutional legacy of colonialism through the history of private members clubs in Kenya. In this colony, clubs developed as institutions which were crucial in assimilating Europeans to a race-based, ruling community. Funded and managed by a settler elite of British aristocrats and officers, clubs institutionalized European unity. This was fostered by the rivalry of Asian migrants, whose claims for respectability and equal rights accelerated settlers' cohesion along both political and cultural lines. Thanks to a very bureaucratic apparatus, clubs smoothed European class differences; they fostered a peculiar style of sociability, unique to the colonial context. Clubs were seen by Europeans as institutions which epitomized the virtues of British civilization against native customs. In the mid-1940s, a group of European liberals thought that opening a multi-racial club in Nairobi would expose educated Africans to the refinements of such sociability. -

Arcus-Gruppen acquires Aalborg and other Nordic spirits brands Arcus-Gruppen has signed an agreement to acquire the brands Aalborg, Brøndums, Gammel Dansk and Malteser from Pernod Ricard. The purchase price (enterprise value) amounts to EUR 103m. The acquisition is subject to approval from the relevant authorities. Arcus-Gruppen is Norway’s leading spirits company and the largest wine supplier in the Nordic region through Vingruppen, Vinordia, Excellars and Arcus Wine Brands. The group’s brands include Braastad Cognac, Linie Aquavit, Løiten and Vikingfjord Vodka. Production and bottling take place in Gjelleråsen, just outside Oslo, and the company has 470 employees. Arcus-Gruppen’s sales in 2011 totalled NOK 1,789m and operating profit (EBITA) amounted to NOK 126m. Ratos’s CEO, Susanna Campbell, comments: “Arcus-Gruppen has achieved strong growth in the wine segment in Sweden and Norway in recent years and is today the largest wine supplier in the Nordic region. We are now taking the next step and strengthening the portfolio of spirits brands as well. This is a strategically significant acquisition which will considerably increase Arcus-Gruppen’s size and market presence within the spirits segment.” The acquired operations comprise the brands Aalborg, Brøndums, Gammel Dansk and Malteser as well as a production facility in Aalborg, Denmark. -
MSC Napoli Report
Explosive Separation of MSC NAPOLI MSC Napoli is a UK flagged container ship built in 1991. Some 275 metres in length, with a beam of 37 metres, she weighs 53,409 gross tonnes. On Thursday 18 January 2007 she suffered flooding to the engine room during force 8 gales, whilst 40 miles south of Cornwall. The 26 crew abandoned ship and were safely rescued from their lifeboat by helicopter, whilst the vessel grounded off the south coast of England. Working in challenging conditions, SMIT salvage removed over 2000 shipping containers and pumped out the majority of the 4 000 tonnes of bunker oil on board in an attempt to salvage the vessel. On the morning of 9 July 2007 SMIT Salvage re-floated the MSC Napoli, and brought her to deeper water, where she was dewatered and inspected. Once re-floated however, it became apparent that the damage she had sustained would prevent her from being towed. After being continuously pounded by bad weather, cracks on both sides of the ship worsened and the stern of the ship gradually started settling lower in the water. With the risk of the vessel sinking, the Secretary of States Representative (SOSREP) for Marine Salvage, made the decision to ground her again. The stern section was grounded and ballasted down with 30 tonnes of sand, east of Sidmouth to minimize any environmental impact or risk to other vessels. At this stage it was decided to separate the stern and bows section of the vessel, at the vessels shear point, immediately forward of the superstructure. -

Not least among these is David Mackenzie, a dedicated researcher and member of our committee, for whom an obituary can be found elsewhere in this issue. His understanding of archives and the information that could be gleaned from them and online to aid the restoration of a proper Newhaven Museum to the area was utterly invaluable in the last year, and he will be sorely missed. A further loss is my Vice-Chair, the redoubtable Heather Yang. As well as a ‘chairship’, we have some things in common: most bizarrely, Heather and I have both worked in Kunming in Yunnan Province, China. -
