Acknowledgments This book discusses questions concerning gender conventions and feminisms in hip-hop in the city of Salvador, Bahia, through the prism of young female activists. My particular interest is to determine the possible existence of a feminist hip-hop in Salvador, with the broader intention of understanding feminism in its plurality as a social movement. To this end, I ponder the ways in which feminist rhetoric is appropriated, as well as to what extent my research’s female subjects represent the movement’s ideologies in their activism. I wish to stress the connection between social markers such as gender, sexuality, and race in the political practice under investigation. By adopting qualitative methodology, this ethnographic-based analysis employs semi- structured interviews carried out in partnership with female hip hoppers. Another research method is participatory observation following my own interaction with this group, guided by Gender and Feminist studies. I am grateful to have my master’s thesis, Feminist Hip-hop? Conventions of Gender and Feminisms in Salvador’s Hip-hop Movement, available in English as a publication of Edufba, who supported the idea through my own initia- tive and financial support. The English edition is now a reality as a result of collaboration between many individuals, including Professor Flávia Goulart Roza, Susane Barros, and Josias Almeida Jr. from Edufba. They were the key players who mobilized the publication of this book, and it simply would not have been possible without you all. The first edition of this book was approved for publication only in Portuguese in 2018 following the theses and dissertations contest hosted by the Federal University of Bahia’s (UFBA) Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos Interdisciplinares sobre Mulheres, Gênero e Feminismo (graduate program in interdisciplinary studies on women, gender, and feminisms - PPGNEIM) for Coleção Bahianas/Edufba. The timing was quite special since it coincided with PPGNEIM’s ten-year anniversary. That project was developed with resources from PROPG/UFBA (Pro-Consolidar 2012) as one of the ini- tiatives of the Projeto de Incentivo à Produção Acadêmica (incentive for academic production project) in the area of Feminist Studies. It was an opportunity to present young female researchers in Feminist and Gender Studies in the state of Bahia and throughout Brazil. To that end, I want to send a huge thank you to everyone from Coleção Bahianas, a paramount piece of the Núcleo de Estudos Interdisciplinares Sobre a Mulher (center for interdisciplinary studies on women - NEIM). I am chiefly grateful to critical partners. Whereas Adorno sees musical attempts at liberation as nullified by their subservience to the whims of government and market, the research and reflection here evidences the emancipatory nature of music. Brazilian Funk demonstrates our capacity to advance change through music, and thus calls upon us to build more efficacious systems for fostering and assimilating music of the world’s people. In refuting Adorno’s condemnation of jazz, I craft a narrative evidencing the pragmatic import of fostering musical outlets within communities while acknowledging the dangers of artistic proliferation in capitalist society. The case of the funk movement in Rio De Janeiro demonstrates art’s function both as a liberatory tool and fulcrum for exploitation. The data substantiating this thesis were compiled through myriad sources: the social and aesthetic theory of Adorno, his contemporaries, and predecessors; interviews with Brazilian funk musicians, musicologists, and enthusiasts; three months investigating the musical communities in Rio De Janeiro and São Paulo; relevant documentaries, ethnographic and historical research, news archives, musical releases, and other online media.

Maila Gutierrez Springfield is an instructor at Valdosta State University and a member of the Maharlika Trio, a group dedicated to commissioning and performing new works for saxophone, trombone and piano. She can be heard on saxophonist Joren Cain’s CD Voices of Dissent and on clarinetist Linda Cionitti’s CD Jag & Jersey. MusicWeb International selected Jag & Jersey as the recording of the month for February 2010 and noted that Maila “is superb in the taxing piano part with its striding bass lines and disjointed rhythms”. For Voices of Dissent, the American Record Guide describes Maila as “an excellent pianist, exhibiting solid technique and fine touch and pedal work." Twice- honored with the Excellence in Accompanying Award at Eastman School of Music, Maila has been staff accompanist for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, Georgia Southern University, the Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Academy and the Interlochen Arts Camp where she had the privilege of working with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. She has collaborated with members of major symphony orchestras, including those in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Jacksonville. Un repertorio hace pocos años casi desconocido ha encontrado el interés de los músi- cos y las empresas discográficas de tal manera que, para dar un ejemplo, una pequeña joya del repertorio virreinal peruano, el himno quechua Hanac Pachap que se encuentra en el Ritual Formulario e Institución de Curas (Lima 1631) del padre Juan Pérez Bocanegra, está disponible ahora en por lo menos una docena de diferentes grabaciones en CD. Esta popula- ridad de un repertorio no muy grande hace que no sólo los musicólogos sino también los intérpretes –que en el campo de la música antigua muchas veces también son investigado- res– estén buscando incansablemente nuevas piezas y nuevos elementos para demostrar la especificidad del repertorio americano. La producción de fuentes escritas sobre la música colonial y sus características queda un poco detrás de ese auge, aunque también se pueden notar grandes avances en la investigación que permiten un mejor entendimiento del contexto social e ideológico que dieron origen a esas obras. Año tras año se descubren nuevas obras, sabemos más de las biografías de los compositores –europeos y nativos– que trabajaban en las Américas. Y poco a poco se llega a dimensionar el aporte y el rol que las poblaciones indígenas (y negras) jugaron en ese contexto de la producción musical durante la colonia.

The three dances examined here represent different regimes, contrasting forms of subjectivity, and very different relations of the individual to society.
