A corpus study shows that a particular riff-based version of compound AABA, with a specific style of buildup intro (Aas 2015) and other characteristic features, is normative in mainstream styles of the metal genre. Within this norm, individual artists have their own strategies (Meyer 1989) for manifesting compound AABA form. These strategies afford stylistic distinctions between bands, so that differences in form can be said to signify aesthetic posing or social positioning—a different kind of signification than the programmatic or semantic communication that has been the focus of most existing music theory research in areas like topic theory or musical semiotics. This article concludes with an exploration of how these different formal strategies embody different qualities of physical movement or feelings of motion, arguing that in making stylistic distinctions and identifying with a particular subgenre or style, we imagine that these distinct ways of moving correlate with (sub)genre rhetoric and the physical stances of imagined communities of fans (Anderson 1983, Hill 2016).     Jens Bogren i Fascination Street Studios 2017-08-29 07:45 CEST Världsberömd svensk studio fyller 15 år Jens Bogren är producenten som lockar många av världens största artister till sin studio Fascination Street Studios utanför Örebro. Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Adele, Elton John, Millencolin och många av världens största metalartister har spelats in eller mastrats av Jens Bogren och hans kollegor. Nu fyller studion 15 år. — Det känns väldigt roligt. Vägen har varit lång och stundtals gropig, men jag har lyckats varva hårt arbete med tur och lite talang. Och jag trivs fortfarande som fisken i vattnet, säger Fascination Street Studios grundare och ägare Jens Bogren. År 2002 flyttade Jens Bogren från Halmstad till Örebro för att ta över det som då hette Studio Kuling. I samband med detta bytte han studions namn och inriktning på dess arbete. Studion gick från att ha en ”kristen” musikinriktning, vars ägare flyttade till Knutby för att där gå med i en viss församling, till att främst producera hårdrock och metal. Sedan dess har många stora artister spelats in i studion och mixats av Jens och hans kollegor. Det stora genombrottet kom i samband med produktionen av Opeths album Ghost Reveries år 2005. — I början gjorde jag allt möjligt och hade egentligen inga särskilda ambitioner inom just metal. Jag spelade in gospelskivor, varvade med lite dansband, jobbade med Åsa Jinder och gjorde en skiva med Håkan Hagegård. Efter några lokala hårdrocksproduktioner hade jag turen att bli rekommenderad för Stockholmsbandet Katatonia, som i sin tur rekommenderade Opeth att jobba med mig. Efter det har jobben kommit i strid ström och jag har kunnat expandera verksamheten.

    Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers Dr Niall Thomas University of Winchester – [email protected] Dr Andrew King University of Hull – [email protected] Abstract The study of the recorded artefact from a musicological perspective continues to unfold through contemporary research. Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the production and the artistic nature of this endeavour is still developing. This article explores phenomenological aspects of producing Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within the genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. Technology enables even amateur music makers the opportunity to record music with relative ease. The democratisation of technology has meant that mobile devices can become pocket sized recording studios (Leyshon, 2009), whilst affordable solutions and emulations of prohibitively expensive computing and recording technology are readily available via the Internet. The technology associated with certain aspects of music making is now more widespread and enables a new sense of creative musical freedom; music producers command a limitless array of technological choices. Despite the benefits of the ever-increasing rate of technological development, the recording industry is changing dramatically, and with it, the production perspectives of record producers.
