A Victory Stupa stands tall in the temple premises bearing testimony to the success and valour of Indian Army in both the wars. It serves as a mark of remembrance for the glorious sacrifices made by our soldiers in line of duty. It salutes the brave hearts who feared nothing and laid down their lives while defending their motherland. SADHEWALA WAR MEMORIAL The heroic saga of the ‘Battle of Laungewala’ remains incomplete without the mention of the action at Sadhewala, a small hamlet in the midst of the Thar Desert. In memory of those who laid down their life for their motherland, this memorial was constructed by 3 GRENADIERS during their tenure in Jaipur . 2 | February 2018 In this Issue……. A soldier lives for the nation and dies for her dignity. Hence the training of a soldier is a bedrock of Indian Army. She was accompanied by GOC-in-C Northern Command, GOC 14 Corps and GOC 3 Infantry Div. She became the first RM to have visited Sub Sector North since Independence. She was briefed by Commander 81 Mountain Brigade followed by interaction with troops. DEFENCE SECRETARY VISITS KASHMIR The Defence Secretary Mr Sanjay Mitra visited Srinagar on 09 Feb 2018 and reviewed the overall security situation in the Valley. He was briefed by Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander about the Counter Infiltration and Counter Terrorism Grids functional in the Valley. Mr Mitra appreciated various measures instituted to strengthen the security posture and the good job being done by all the Security Forces. VCOAS VISITS NORTH KASHMIR Lieutenant General Sarath Chand, VCOAS visited Valley on 08 Feb 2018 to review the prevailing security situation and visited the Formations and Units in North Kashmir. During his interaction with the troops he emphasised on the need for undertaking relentless intelligence based operations to sustain pressure on the terrorist groups and maintain a high degree of vigil along the Line of Control to eliminate any infiltration bid. February 2018 | 5 SniPPetS As part of the Indian Army’s ongoing out reach programme to foster the spirit of National Integration across the entire country, 19 JAK RIF of Dao Division organised a tour for 24 Students and 3 teachers from Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh under operation SAMARITAN from 24 Dec 2017 to 06 Jan 2018. The participants interacted with the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind and Hon’ble Union Minister for Home Affairs, Mr. Kiran Rijiju who shared their experiences with the students and motivated them to work hard and contribute actively in Nation building process. A Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) Lecture cum Demonstration was conducted on 22 Feb 2018, under aegis of Central Command. Evacuation of people, containment measures, cordoning of affected area and treatment of people were the key highlights of the lecture-cum-demonstration. Critical CBRN equipment was also displayed & its use was shown to the participants. A ceremonial Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) Indo-France Joint Military Exercise was on the occasion of ‘Chinese Spring Festival’ was conducted at Mailly Le Camp (France) from 28 conducted on 13 Feb 2018 at Chinese BPM hut Jan 18 to 04 Feb 18. The aim of the Exercise was in Moldo Garrison of the PLA in Chushul Sector to acquaint both forces with their operating of Eastern Ladakh. procedures for counter insurgency & counter terrorism operations under UN mandate. 6 | February 2018 SniPPetS A high level joint Indian Army, JKP and CRPF meeting was held at Awantipur, J&K. The meeting was chaired by General Officer Commanding, Chinar Corps. IG Kashmir, IG CRPF, officers from IB and Special Bureau were in attendance. Apart from sharing of ideas and objectives, review of intelligence and operations were carried out which led to defining a joint future strategy to counter the designs of terrorists. A four member Indian Army Delegation visited Naypyidaw in Myanmar to impart training on UN Peacekeeping Operations to Myanmar Army. The training was conducted over two weeks from 05-16 Feb 2018. A delegation comprising 10 students, 02 teachers and 02 Army officers from various Army Schools of Bangladesh visited Kolkata from 05-09 Feb 2018 as part of Cultural Visit to foster Indo- Bangladesh Military ties. Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman A seminar on ‘North East Region of India-Bridging felicitated Punjab Regiment Contingent on 24 Gaps & Securing Borders’ was organised by HQ Feb 2018, who were adjudged Best Marching Integrated Defence Staff on 21 Feb 2018. The Contingent of the Republic Day Parade 2018. Chief of Army Staff attended the seminar. February 2018 | 7 SniPPetS Lieutenant General D Anbu, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, presented Gallantry Awards to the officers and other ranks in a solemn but impressive Investiture Ceremony at Udhampur on 14 Feb 18. Thirty nine Sena Medals (Gallantry) including two posthumous were awarded on the occasion. The Army Commander also presented Unit Citation to 26 units for their overall outstanding performance. Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command, awarded gallantry medals to Army personnel at Investiture Ceremony conducted in Albert Ekka Auditorium in Fort William Kolkata on 24 Feb 2018. Eight Sena Medals (Gallantry) were awarded on the occasion. Out of these, two jawans who made the supreme sacrifice during operations were awarded posthumously. On the occasion, 15 units were also awarded Unit Citations for distinguished service. Southern Command Investiture Ceremony was conducted at Pune on 10 February 2018. Lieutenant General D R Soni, General Officer Commanding- in-Chief Southern Command, felicitated two officers and four other ranks with Sena Medal (Gallantry). The Army Commander also bestowed Unit Citations to 14 Units of Southern Command for their meritorious and outstanding performance. 8 | February 2018 makinG oF a Soldier “The Mauryan soldier……..He is the very basis and silent, barely visible cornerstone of our fame, culture, physical well-being and prosperity; in short, of the entire nation building activity.” Aim Aim of training is to groom the soldiers in conformity with the historical and cultural values of Indian Army and Nation and provide the Nation, soldiers of the highest professional, physical and moral caliber. T ypes of Training Training can be broadly classified into two groups, regular and advance (special) training. After selecting recruits from rallies conducted in various parts of India, they are sent to respective centres for training.
