Collis All rights reserved ABSTRACT Anxious Records: Race, Imperial Belonging, and the Black Literary Imagination, 1900 – 1946 Victoria J. Collis This dissertation excavates the print and archive culture of diasporic and continental Africans who forged a community in Cape Town between 1900 and 1946. Although the writers I consider write after the Victorian era, I use the term “black Victorian” to preserve their own political investments in a late nineteenth-century understanding of liberal empire. With the abolition of slavery in 1834 across the British Empire and the Cape Colony’s qualified nonracial franchise of 1853, Cape Town, and District Six in particular, took on new significance in black radicalism. By writing periodicals, pamphlets and autobiographies, black Victorians hoped to write themselves into the culture of empire. These recovered texts read uncannily, unsettling the construction of official archives as well as contemporary canons of South African, African and diasporic African literatures. By turning to the traffic of ideas between Africa and its diaspora in Cape Town, this dissertation recovers a vision of (black) modernity that had not yet succumbed to the formulations of anti-imperial nationalisms. In many ways this dissertation began over two decades as I watched Nelson Rolihlala Mandela freed from prison in apartheid South Africa. Glued to the television screen when Trinidad and Tobago still had only one television station, my family and I rejoiced at what felt like our uncle’s release. In another six months, two more stations would join the fold, with cable and satellite TV following quickly on their heels. Perhaps because he was freed before Trinidad and Tobago jumped off the precipice of multimedia communication, but something about Mandela, and the dream of black liberation in South Africa has always animated my intellectual curiousity. My generation of Trinidadians still remembers where we were when the Chaka Zulu miniseries aired. South Africa here denoted whether or not you had access to a TV. It represented a reconnection with our ancestral African ‘roots’ as a nation. At coolers and standpipes, during recess and lunch, we whiled away our time mulling over the scenes of that week’s installment. (Who saw how Chaka betrayed his mother?) Those born that year and several thereafter carry our investment in that South Africa with their names. It is not uncommon to meet Trinidadian boys and men by the name of Shaka, or girls and women called Nandi. In what might elsewhere be a v problematic attachment to national sentiment, I thank my nation for being what it was in my youth. And hope you will be that kind of nation again. I thank my parents for letting me stay up to watch both events and pushing me to discuss them as though I were already a scholar-in-residence. You remain my best teachers and mentors. Thank you for life; thank you for nursing us through this degree. Thank you for unpaid hours of childcare. This dissertation is more yours than it is mine. All words seem to diminish what you’ve given me. To my grandparents, I thank you for the lessons learned at your feet and the struggles you faced. Its humble origins and spread is at- tributed to several people based on their experiences over time. Among some of the advocates were Henry Sylvester Williams, Marcus Garvey and George Padmore of the diaspora and Peter Abrahams, Jomo Kenyatta, Sekou Toure, Julius Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah of South Africa, Kenya, Guinea, Tanza- nia and Ghana respectively. The different pan-African views on the African continent notwithstanding, Kwame Nkrumah is arguably in a class of his own and perhaps comparable only to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. Pan-Africanism became the cornerstone of his struggle for the independence of Ghana, other African countries and the political unity of the continent. To transform this vision into reality, Nkrumah mobilised the Ghanaian masses through a pop- ular appeal. Apart from his eloquent speeches, he also engaged in persuasive writings. These writings have survived him and are as appealing today as they were in the past. Kwame Nkrumah ceased every opportunity to persuasively articulate for a Union Government for all of Africa. Due to his unswerving vision for a Union Government for Africa, the visionary Kwame Nkrumah created a microcosm of African Union through the Ghana-Guinea and then Ghana-Guinea-Mali Union.

    Economic Ascendance is/as Moral Rightness: The New Religious Political Right in Post-apartheid South Africa Part One: The Political Introduction If one were to go by the paucity of academic scholarship on the broad New Right in the post-apartheid South African context, one would not be remiss for thinking that the country is immune from this global phenomenon. I say broad because there is some academic scholarship that deals only with the existence of right wing organisations at the end of the apartheid era (du Toit 1991, Grobbelaar et al. 1989, Schönteich 2004, Schönteich and Boshoff 2003, van Rooyen 1994, Visser 2007, Welsh 1988, 1989,1995, Zille 1988). In this older context, this work focuses on a number of white Right organisations, including their ideas of nationalism, the role of Christianity in their ideologies, as well as their opposition to reform in South Africa, especially the significance of the idea of partition in these organisations. Helen Zille’s list, for example, includes the Herstigte Nasionale Party, Conservative Party, Afrikaner People’s Guard, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs (SABRA), Society of Orange Workers, Forum for the Future, Stallard Foundation, Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), and the White Liberation Movement (BBB). There is also literature that deals with New Right ideology and its impact on South African education in the transition era by drawing on the broader literature on how the New Right was using education as a primary battleground globally (Fataar 1997, Kallaway 1989). Moreover, another narrow and newer literature exists that continues the focus on primarily extreme right organisations in South Africa that have found resonance in the global context of the rise of the so-called Alternative Right that rejects mainstream conservatism.

    Afrocentric Education: What does it mean to Toronto’s Black parents? by Patrick Radebe M.Ed., University of Toronto, 2005 B.A. (Hons.), University of Toronto, 2000 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Educational Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2017 Patrick Radebe, 2017 Abstract The miseducation of Black students attending Toronto metropolitan secondary schools, as evinced by poor grades and high dropout rates among the highest in Canada, begs the question of whether responsibility for this phenomenon lies with a public school system informed by a Eurocentric ethos. Drawing on Afrocentric Theory, this critical qualitative study examines Black parents’ perceptions of the Toronto Africentric Alternative School and Afrocentric education. Snowball sampling and ethnographic interviews, i.e., semi-structured interviews, were used to generate data. A total of 12 Black parents, three men and nine women, were interviewed over a 5-month period and data analyzed. It was found that while a majority of the respondents supported the Toronto Africentric Alternative School and Afrocentric education, some were ambivalent and others viewed the school and the education it provides as divisive and unnecessary. The research findings show that the majority of the participants were enamored with Afrocentricity, believing it to be a positive influence on Black lives. While they supported TAAS and AE, the minority, on the other hand, opposed the school and its educational model. The findings also revealed a Black community, divided between a majority seeking to preserve whatever remained of (their) African identity and a determined minority that viewed assimilation to be in the best interests of Black students.

ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the apartheid debate from an international perspective. Positioned at the methodological intersection of intellectual and diplomatic history, it examines how, where, and why African nationalists, Afrikaner nationalists, and American liberals contested South Africa’s place in the global community in the 1960s. It uses this fight to explore the contradictions of international politics in the decade after second-wave decolonization. The apartheid debate was never at the center of global affairs in this period, but it rallied international opinions in ways that attached particular meanings to concepts of development, order, justice, and freedom. As such, the debate about South Africa provides a microcosm of the larger postcolonial moment, exposing the deep-seated differences between politicians and policymakers in the First and Third Worlds, as well as the paradoxical nature of change in the late twentieth century. This dissertation tells three interlocking stories. First, it charts the rise and fall of African nationalism. For a brief yet important moment in the early and mid-1960s, African nationalists felt genuinely that they could remake global norms in Africa’s image and abolish the ideology of white supremacy through U.N.

    Jerry Goodman (Chicago, Illinois, March 16, 1949) is an American violinist best known for playing electric violin in the bands The Flock and the jazz fusion Mahavishnu Orchestra. Goodman actually began his musical career as The Flock's roadie before joining the band on violin. Trained in the conservatory, both of his parents were in the string section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His uncle was the noted composer and jazz pianist Marty Rubenstein. After his 1970 appearance on John McLaughlin's album My Goal's Beyond, he became a member of McLaughlin's original Mahavishnu Orchestra lineup until the band broke up in 1973, and was viewed as a soloist of equal virtuosity to McLaughlin, keyboardist Jan Hammer and drummer Billy Cobham. In 1975, after Mahavishnu, Goodman recorded the album Like Children with Mahavishnu keyboard alumnus Jan Hammer. Starting in 1985 he recorded three solo albums for Private Music -- On the Future of Aviation, Ariel, and the live album It's Alive with luminaries such as Fred Simon and Jim Hines—and went on tour with his own band, as well as with Shadowfax and The Dixie Dregs. He scored Lily Tomlin's The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe and is the featured violinist on numerous film soundtracks, including Billy Crystal's Mr. Saturday Night and Steve Martin's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels . His violin can be heard on more than fifty albums from artists ranging from Toots Thielemans to Hall & Oates to Styx to Jordan Rudess to Choking Ghost to Derek Sherinian. Goodman has appeared on four of Sherinian's solo records - Inertia (2001), Black Utopia (2003), Mythology (2004), and Blood of the Snake (2006) In 1993, Goodman joined the American instrumental band, The Dixie Dregs, fronted by guitarist Steve Morse.

A finales de los años cuarenta y principios de los cincuenta, Roy Haynes tuvo la clase de aprendizaje que constituiría el sueño de cualquier músico actual: sentarse en el puesto de baterista y acompañar al gran Charlie Parker. Ahora, cincuenta años después, y tras haber tocado con todos los grandes del jazz: Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, o Bud Powell, todavía coloca sus grabaciones en la cima de las listas de las revistas especializadas en jazz. Este veterano baterista, comenzó su andadura profesional en las bigbands de Frankie Newton y Louis Russell (1945-1947) y el siguiente paso fue tocar entre 1947 y 1949 con el maestro el saxo tenor, Lester Young. Entre 1949 y 1952, formo parte del quinteto de Charlie Parker y desde ese privilegiado taburete vio pasar a las grandes figuras del bebop y aprender de ellas. Acompañó a la cantante Sarah Vaughan, por los circuitos del jazz en los Estados Unidos entre 1953 y 1958 y cuando finalizó su trabajo grabo con Thelonious Monk, George Shearing y Lennie Tristano entre otros y ocasionalmente sustituía a Elvin Jones en el cuarteto de John Coltrane. Participó en la dirección de la Banda Sonora Original de la película "Bird" dirigida por Clint Eastwood en 1988 y todavía hoy en activo, Roy Haynes, es una autentica bomba dentro de un escenario como pudimos personalmente comprobar en uno de sus últimos conciertos celebrados en España y mas concretamente en Sevilla en el año 2000. En 1994, Roy Haynes recibió el premio Danish Jazzpar, que se concede en Dinamarca.
