  • New Configuration of Borders – New Division Of
NEW CONFIGURATION OF BORDERS – NEW DIVISION OF EUROPE? MEDIA REPRESENTATION OF SLOVENIA'S ACCESSION TO THE SCHENGEN REGIME Karmen ERJAVEC, Melita POLER KOVAČIČ Faculty of Social Sciences, Ljubljana UDK: 070.44(497.4)"200":341.222(497.5:497.4) Izvorni znanstveni rad Primljeno: 10. 4. 2008. The article's goal is to present media representation of the new regime of the Slovenian borders, introduced in December 2007. Critical discourse analysis of news items, published by all major Slovenian media between the beginning of December 2007 and the end of January 2008, reveals that there was no single homogeneous representation of the border included by all the media. Instead, there are four discourses: discourse of borderlessness, discourse of the Iron Curtain, discourse of the Schengen fortress, and discourse of everyday life problems. All discourses are fragmented, neglecting political and social contexts, but only the last one, which appeared in the regional media only, critically represented the new regime on the Schengen border. The elite Slovenian media also have thoroughly changed the dominant representation of the Slovenian borders. What used to be "an Iron Curtain" was reconfigured into "borderlessness", and what used to be "borderlessness" was reconfigured into "a fortress" and "a problematic border". They also reproduced a clear division, with Europe/Europeans and Slovenia/Slovenians on one side and the region and people behind the southern Schengen border on the other. Keywords: border, media representation, European Union, Schengen regime, Slovenia Karmen Erjavec, University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, Kardeljeva ploščad 5, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia. 957 E-mail: karmen.erjavec @fdv.uni-lj.si INTRODUCTION On 21 December 2007, Slovenia became part of the "Schengen Europe", as Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša said at the celebration of "the abolition of the European borders".

  • Projekt: Napolnimo Stožice
PROJEKT: NAPOLNIMO STOŽICE KAKŠNA SO DEJSTVA? Mestna občina Ljubljana bo v juliju 2010 dokončala izgradnjo nogometnega stadiona in športne dvorane v Stožicah.

  • Article by Barbara Verdnik, Replaced Director of Primorske Novice
Media Watch Journal, No. 28, May 2007, English Supplement (published by the Peace Institute, see also http://mediawatch.mirovni-institut.si) Primorske novice Newspaper – A Prey to Political and Economic Interests By Barbara Verdnik, former director of Primorske novice, a regional daily in Slovenia Last year’s events at the Primorske novice newspaper are an example or a prototype of a media takeover stemming from an amalgam of political and economic interests. Although the recipe is not a Mediterranean one, the ingredients and procedures are very similar to those in numerous other cases we have been witnessing in the ‘reshaping’ of the economy and controlling the media in the last couple of years: first the ownership structure of companies is rearranged, then Supervisory Board members are replaced, then Directors or Management Boards are dismissed, or they resign citing ‘personal reasons’ (this has been one of the most abused phrases of the recent period), and finally another cadre is appointed. The case of Primorske novice is even more prominent, firstly because the newspaper was in the midst of realizing its project of becoming a daily and had no significant financial reserves, but especially because of the unprofessional – one could even say careless – attitude of the owners. By interfering in the operation of the company and by replacing certain individuals, they did not only interrupt the development but also caused a staffing and financial crisis in the company. In addition, they also chose to turn a blind eye to the public interest, i.e. the population of the Primorska region. In their annual reports, the companies Luka Koper, Intereuropa Koper, Hit Nova Gorica, Primorje Ajdovščina and Banka Koper emphasize their commitment to social responsibility; however, being owners of Primorske novice, they clearly demonstrated that other interests were more important.

The European Commission support for the production of this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the contents which reflects the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsi•ble for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. Introduction In recent years, we have seen the rise of the anti-liberal democracy politics in Eastern European EU member states. In the meantime, those trends are becoming visible in some Western European Countries but also USA. The situation in Poland and Hungary is maybe the best example of such politics where citizens are giving support to political parties whose political objectives are against the EU rule of law principles and against some fundamental human rights. Recent refugee crisis has also deepen those concerns. This is a clear sign that the citizens of Eastern European EU member states are willing to give up of some of the fundamental human rights values such as freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, free media, civil society or independent judiciary. Those trends are seriously harming EU rule of law principles but also are derogating human rights and democratic standards.

  • Russia and Norway
his is the third issue of the annual European Islamophobia Report (EIR) consisting of an overall evaluation of Islamophobia in Europe in the year 2017, as well as 33 country reports which include almost all EU member states and additional Tcountries such as Russia and Norway. This year’s EIR represents the work of 40 promi- EUROPEAN nent scholars and civil society activists from various European countries. The denial of the very existence of Islamophobia/anti-Muslim racism/anti-Muslim hate crime in Europe by many demonstrates the need for an appropriate effort and political ISLAMOPHOBIA will to tackle this normalized racism and its manifestations that are deeply entrenched in European societies, institutions, and states. This denial is not only the case for extremist groups on the political fringe of the soci- ety, but rather far-right discourses have moved to the center of political power. Conse- REPORT quently, it is not only right-wing extremist groups that rely on the means of Islamophobic propaganda and discourse - social democrats, liberals, leftists or conservatives are not immune to this form of racism. 2017 As a survey published by the FRA reveals 76% of Muslim respondents feel strongly at- tached to the country they live in, while 31% of those seeking work have been discrimi- nated against in the last five years. At the same time, only 12% of Muslims say they have reported cases of discrimination. Hence, we can say with certainty that the extent of ENES BAYRAKLI • FARID HAFEZ (Eds) discrimination Muslims face in Europe is much greater than the numbers revealed in any report on Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate crime in Europe.
