  • Sculptural Serenity: an Open Air Extravaganza on Blackpool’S Promenade Introduction
SCULPTURAL SERENITY: AN OPEN AIR EXTRAVAGANZA ON BLACKPOOL’S PROMENADE INTRODUCTION When the opportunity to travel comes back into our lives in 2021, outdoor space, and the chance to explore new facets within it, are likely to be highly valued. The so-called ‘staycation’ is predicted to be the number one holiday trend this year and we may, for some time, need to do our own thing, keeping our distance from others, to keep everyone safe. If there is one thing Blackpool – and the rest of our Fylde coastline – has in abundance, it is open space. We are all said to have fallen in love with nature during lockdowns and our fabulous seafront offers every opportunity to explore its call, whether you listen to crashing waves, watch the sand change colour as the tide recedes, or pay attention to the cries of the herring gulls overhead. We reflect the colours of Blackpool within our luxury self- catering holiday apartments, using the ‘Left Coast Colour Palette’ within each one’s individual branding and interior. What we really want to do, of course, is get our visitors outdoors, exploring these for themselves and discovering new facets to Blackpool and its surrounding towns and villages. To help you do that whenever you can, whilst (for now) giving you something new to learn about Blackpool, we have put together our little guide to some stunning things, remarkable, unusual and poignant, which you can see, when you step outside our door. If you want to walk with added purpose, get carried away with your camera whilst trying to take artistic shots, or cycle and take in sea air, this guide will provide something for you to look out for, ponder, debate and discuss with the dog, perhaps, if he or she is also staying with us! We hope it will bring you some added pleasure, at a time when the outdoors and open spaces will have to continue to be our sanctuary.

  • Window Gazer Guide Pleasure Beach Heritage Tram Stop
Window Gazer guide Pleasure Beach Heritage Tram Stop As we leave the stop the loop takes us to join the main line, to our right as we go around the curve is South Shore, the tram tracks going to the southern terminus of Starr Gate and home to the modern fleet of Flexity trams. On the right now is Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which opened in 1896 and is still owned by the Thompson family today. The Big One – a fantastic roller coaster and highly recommended if you haven‟t already been on it – has held a firm presence on Blackpool‟s skyline since 1994. Looking back to the sea shore is a work of art, The High Tide Organ, one of ten pieces of art titled The Great Promenade Show between here and Starr Gate. The High Tide Organ is powered by the tide forcing air up through the pipes to produce a distinctive sound - some call it music. Next on the sea side is the Sandcastle Waterpark. Built in 1986 to replace the South Shore Baths. It is one of Europe‟s largest indoor water parks. South Shore Baths was an open- air swimming pool and, when it opened in 1923, it was the largest in the world! Across the road is the Velvet Coaster, which was the largest Wetherspoons pub in the UK when it opened in 2015. It was previously home to the Lucky Star amusement arcade. South Pier was the last of the three piers to be built, in 1893, which makes it older than the Tower! It is the shortest and widest of our three piers.

  • April Newsletter
the APRIL NEWSLETTER INTERVIEW WITH JANE YOWARD, our VICE CHAIRMAN. Hello Jane, are you an Emsworth resident of old, or where did you reside before? We moved to Emsworth the day the King died (6th February 1952 for those that don't know … or can’t remember) when I was just 4 months old. My parents were both pharmacists, having met on their first day at pharmacy college, and managed Mr. Williams' pharmacy at 22 North Street. We lived at 18a Victoria Road as the house came with the job before moving to Slipper Mill in 1970. It was strange at first, meeting in the Community Centre, as that had been my junior school and the parish hall was where we had lunch when I started school. I moved away in 1976 to the Thames Valley for my work but the pull of Emsworth was so strong that when I had a contract in Havant in 1987, I moved back. A lot of my friends did the same so they were around when I returned. All being well, you are to be our next u3a Chairman, how do you feel about this? Nervous but honoured that people have that much faith in me. I know I will have a lot of support. When did you join our u3a? I retired in September 2014 and thought I would spend the first few months sorting the house out ... it’s still waiting to be done! My father was a member of Ems Valley u3a and took me to the Christmas party as his guest.
