Nick: And I'm Nick. Emily: In the early days of aviation flying was expensive and dangerous. And even if you could come up with the money, there were often establishment barriers like racism and sexism in the way. Matt: In Chicago, a group of Black aviators who called themselves the Challenger Air Pilots Association, created a club and a community that has since helped thousands of Black pilots learn to fly. Nick: And when the government started to invest in civilian and military pilot training programs, the Challenger Club was instrumental in lobbying to include Black aviators in those programs. Emily: We're looking back to the 1930s in the skies above Chicago today on AirSpace. Theme music up and out Emily: So the story of what becomes the Challenger Air Pilots Association starts off with two auto mechanics, and a broken down car in Detroit, Michigan. Nick: If we were making a movie out of this, this would be a really fun scene in the first act. This would be where it all starts to come together. So we've got these two mechanics, Cornelius Coffey, and John C. Robinson. And before this moment, they've got sort of similar paths to each other, but also to what we normally hear as the genesis of a great aviator or pilot later on. They either rode in an airplane at an early age, or they saw a barnstormer at an early age, and they're both interested in this. -

January 2021 Mean That We Have Been Idle
CAF RISE ABOVE® Inspiring young people to RISE ABOVE adversity using the lessons and stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). I think all of us are happy to see 2020 in the rear-view mirror and we have high hopes that 2021 will bring us back to whatever the new normal in our lives will be. But no New Year celebration is complete without some look back at the last. By any measure, 2020 was tough. Nearly everyone has lost a friend or acquaintance to this terrible virus. But like the Tuskegee Airmen and the WASP, it is adversity that makes us stronger and we at the RISE ABOVE Squadron took that same approach. It was our hope that 2020 would be the full-scale launch of the addition of the WASP Photo courtesy Max Haynes program to our traveling exhibit, but just as our tour was starting, it ended. Celebrating Legends, Icons & Trailblazers National African American History Month A Century of Black Life, History and Culture February 2021 FREEDOM’S JOURNAL (1827-1829) POSTED ON JANUARY 4, 2011 BY CONTRIBUTED BY: ELLIOT PARTIN Freedom's Journal, Vol. 1 No. 1, March 16, 1827 Courtesy Library of Congress (sn83030455) Freedom’s Journal was the first African American owned and operated newspaper in the United States. A weekly four column publication printed every Friday, Freedom’s Journal was founded by free born African Americans John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish on March 16, 1827 in New York City, New York. The newspaper contained both foreign and domestic news, editorials, biographies, births and deaths in the local African American community, and advertisements. Editorials deriding slavery, racial discrimination, and other injustices against African Americans were aimed at providing a counterweight to many of the white newspapers of the time period which openly supported slavery and racial bias. Freedom’s Journal was not born solely out of the perceived need to defend African Americans as much as a desire within the black community to create a forum that would express their views and advocate for their causes. Russwurm and Cornish placed great value on the need for reading and writing as keys to empowerment for the black population and they hoped a black newspaper would encourage literacy and intellectual development among African Americans. Relatedly the newspaper sought to broaden its readers’ awareness of world events and developments while simultaneously strengthening ties among black communities across the Northern United States. Subscriptions were $3 per year and Freedom’s Journal at its peak circulated in eleven states, the District of Columbia, Haiti, Europe, and Canada. -

Alice Allison Dunnigan (1906–1983) in 1948 Became the First Black Woman News Correspondent to Receive White House Credentials
CountHerhistory Barbara Joan Zeitz, M.A. September 2018 White House/Black Reporter: Alice Allison Dunnigan (1906–1983) in 1948 became the first black woman news correspondent to receive White House credentials. As a member of the Senate and House of Representatives press galleries, she covered presidential press conferences, reported on Congress, the State Department, the Supreme Court and received news generally kept from most reporters, the public, especially women and African Americans. Ms. Dunnigan was the first black woman journalist to travel with a president when she accompanied Harry S. Truman’s 1948 whistle-stop tour, for which she paid her own way to cover it. That year, she was the first black woman elected to the Women's National Press Club. Her association with this organization allowed her to travel extensively in the United States, to Canada, Israel, South America, Africa, Mexico, and the Caribbean. She was honored by Haitian President François Duvalier for her articles on Haiti. Amid her many credentials, she served as chief of the Washington bureau of the Associated Negro Press for fourteen years. Still, at formal White House functions, she often was mistaken for the wife of a visiting dignitary; no one could imagine a black woman attending such an event on her own repute. At the time, during the 1940s and 50s, white-male congressional legislators were legislating gender disparate and racially discriminating laws enacted during Reconstruction, and were bolstered by the Supreme Court 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson confirming “separate but equal” Jim Crow laws in education, labor, housing, incarceration, the GI Bill, and more. -

History Bowl 2014 -2015 Study Guide Questions can address: events that occurred in Kentucky, people from Kentucky and their lives , national and international events that involved Kentuckians, landmarks of Kentucky, geography, sports, politics and politicians, education, art, etc. Below is a list of possib le categories and their topics. Topics are subject to change. Clubs can have more than one team, but each team must be made up of no more than 4 people with 1 alternate. Please note that categories and time frames may not align exactly with textbooks. Each history bowl team will have five categories to choose questions from, including a miscellaneous category that can include questions from any time period in Kentucky history. 2015 National History Day Theme “Leadership and Legacy in History ” It is time to start thinking about National History Day in Kentucky (NHDKy) 2015. By competing in NHDKy you are becoming a better student. The skills you will develop by reading, researching, writing, analyzing and presenting a topic that you choose will translate to all of your academic subjects. This year’s theme for the elementary (4 th -5th grade), junior (6 th -8th grade), and senior (9 th -12 th grade) divisions is “Leadership and Legacy in History .” As always National History Day has selected a theme that is broad enough to explore almost any topic, whether it is local, state, national or world histor y. Of course, Kentucky connections to this year’s theme are virtually limitless. To understand the historical importanc e of your topic , you must ask questions about time and place, cause and effect, change over time, and impact and significance. You s hould ask questions about why events happened and what impact the events had. Regardless of the topic selected, you must do more than describe what happened. You must draw conclusions, basing your opinion on evidenc e, about how the topic affected individu als, communities, nations and the world. Studies should include an investigation into available primary and secondary sources, analysis of the evidence, and a clear explanation of the relationship of the topic to the theme.
