The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small.

Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr. Charu C Mishra Assoc. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times.

This colorism is reflected in matrimonial advertisements, commercial advertising and media, especially the 500 million dollar skin lightening product industry, and Bollywood, the cinematic opium of the masses. I hypothesize that this cultural mindset arises from the history of the subcontinent, namely the numerous invasions and imperial conquests that have occurred, where an imbalance of power has been created along the lines of light skin and dark skin. This power dynamic leads to a difference in socioeconomic status that over time became correlated with India’s caste system, and remains deeply entrenched in Indian society, even after the legalized prohibition of caste-based discrimination. For this paper, I have examined matrimonial advertisements, commercial advertisements for fairness creams, and the role of color in determining beauty standards reflected in Hindi cinema.

An Unfinished Letter (Iti Mrinalini): Movie Review hollywoodreporter.com/review/an-unfinished-letter-iti-mrinalini-179447 The Bottom Line An addicting shot of melodrama from and about the Bengali film industry. Director Aparna Sen Screenwriters/story Aparna Sen, Ranjan Ghosh Cast Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rajat Kapoor, Priyanshu Chatterjee The frame of reference for western cineastes to the sensibilities of the Bengali film An Unfinished Letter (Iti Mrinalini) would be a deep dive into the lush melodrama of Douglas Sirk along with a dramatic examination of the transitory nature of romantic passions found in Max Ophüls, all set in the world of Bengali intellectuals and the region’s film industry. In other words, it’s not a movie for the Bollywood crowd, despite its movie world setting. It’s heavy-duty melodrama with a fatalistic impulse that ties every tragedy into larger events within the subcontinent while exploiting the presence of two lovely icons of India’s film world. Those would be the film’s star, director and co-writer, Aparna Sen, and Konkona Sen Sharma, her real- life daughter. Boasting the facial beauty for which Bengali women are renowned and more than resembling one another, they credibly play a famous film actress at two different stages of her life. The theatrical options outside of Bengal for this film, which played at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, would seem to be limited to festival exposure and lovers of sophisticated Indian regional cinema. The movie first introduces us to Mrinalini (Seth) on what she intends to be her final night on earth.
