But during that summer, she learned an invaluable lesson about women travelling solo. She had been staying in what she called a “cheap hotel in Izmir,” when, she says, “I was awakened by a phone call in the middle of the night, some man saying ‘Sexy, let me in.’” She hung up immediately, but the next thing she knew, she heard a key turning in the door. irst, Marvel and Netflix joined forces for Daredevil, the action- based, superhero origin series that helped groundF and refocus the exploding comic book chaos of The Avengers. Set on the street corners of New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, it lent an air of reality to a blind vigilante. Then came Jessica Jones, a modern noir series that delivered a female protagonist who was a multi-layered anti-superhero struggling with her own personal recovery. Now, it’s Luke Cage’s turn. Actor Mike Colter made his debut as the barkeep with superhuman strength, unbreakable skin and an affinity for tipsy private detectives on Jessica Jones. But in his new Marvel series, Colter will be at the top of the call sheet. He is Marvel’s first African American lead in a title series or movie since the comic book company rebooted its Hollywood franchise master plan in 2008. It’s a big deal for fans, who’ve been waiting a long time to see this classic character translated for modern times since the comic book debut back in 1972. So what does Colter have in store for Cage? What lies beyond his role as love interest on Jessica Jones? We spoke with the actor during his lunch break from the set of Luke Cage and peppered the actor with questions. Will there be flashbacks? Will there be yellow boots?

Daredevil is a bit of a dark action series, Jessica Jones has a noir feel. What direction will the Luke Cage series take? Luke Cage is going to have soul, it’s going to have intensity, it’s going to have dark parts to it. I think what’s going to make it unique is also the musicality of it.
