M. Keith Booker, PhD Dissertation Director Yajaira M. Padilla, PhD Frank Scheide, PhD Committee Member Committee Member Abstract This project analyzes adaptation in the Hindi film industry and how the concepts of gender and identity have changed from the original text to the contemporary adaptation. The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films. -

Research Scholar ISSN 2320 – 6101 www.researchscholar.co.in An International Refereed e-Journal of Literary Explorations Impact Factor 0.793 (IIFS) THE CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY OF PUBLIC SPACE IN DEEPA MEHTA’S ELEMENTS TRILOGY Abhilash Dey M.Phil Scholar Department of English University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India Abstract The following article takes up the representation of heterotopic public places and lived spaces in the visual story arcs of (celebrated Indian- Canadian filmmaker) Deepa Mehta for a closer probe. She has made her mark in the map of world cinema with her outstanding and thought- provoking feminist movies such as Water, Fire and Earth. A spokesperson of Indian women's plight, she leaves no stone unturned in portraying the telling helplessness of Indian women, in times past and times present. This paper also travels across the theories propounded by Foucault, Marc Augé and Ray Oldenburg and frequently seeks its sustenance from the matchless erudition of film-critic, Roger Ebert. The lived experiences of the pivotal protagonists involved in the sad-glad process of lives and times take place more in the public space than in the home space, and therein lies the crux of this proposed investigation. The spatiality of the relationship dynamic that attains fruition in the home space actually finds its fountainhead in the public space abroad. Deepa Mehta's visual rhetoric adduces support to the points driven home in this article. This is the epoch of space, the epoch of simultaneity and juxtaposition—to reiterate Foucault from his 1967-published treatise on discursive other space, “Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias”. -
Ifu Aur Main
IRRFAN AND I Written by Vishal BhardwajTimes Delhi INT. MY HOME - DAY SUPER: 29TH APRIL 2020 It’s lockdown in Mumbai. I have been working from home for the past one month. The phone rings. It flashes M.P’s name on the screen. It gives me tremors. M.P is supposed to be my informer in Irrfan’s agency. I let the phone ring for a while and then take the call fearing the worst. A beat. M.P. He has started improving. Man, this guy is a hell of a fighter. Doctors are hopeful that he will bounce back. I take a deep breath and cut the line. LITTLE LATER I argue with Rekha for serving me less PANEER in last night’s dinner. I complain to her of being biased when it comes to choosing between me and Aasmaan. My phone beeps. I check my WhatsApp messenger (still bickering with Rekha). It’s a message from a friend from America. It reads - ‘Saddened to hear about Irrfan Khan’. I check my Twitter (Still squabbling fiercely with Rekha) to verify the authenticity of it. No news. I rule out the possibility. Times I bring myself to hear what Rekha is saying with tears in her eyes. REKHA What kind of pettiness is this? The phone rings again. It’s M.P once more. I pick it up hurriedly this time. There are sobs on the other side. A bomb explodesDelhi in my heart. CUT TO: EXT. ROAD TO GRAVEYARD - DAY Face masked with a N95 mask and hands covered with a pair of surgical gloves, I travel in my car on the deserted road leading to the Muslim cemetery. -

THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small. -

Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr
Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr. Charu C Mishra Assoc. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times. -
