Blood Money in Sudan and Beyond: Restorative Justice Or Face-Saving Measure?
BLOOD MONEY IN SUDAN AND BEYOND: RESTORATIVE JUSTICE OR FACE-SAVING MEASURE? A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of The School of Continuing Studies and of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Liberal Studies By Jacqueline H. Wilson, M.S. Georgetown University Washington, D. C. March 25, 2014 Copyright © 2014 by Jacqueline H. Wilson All Rights Reserved ii BLOOD MONEY IN SUDAN AND BEYOND: RESTORATIVE JUSTICE OR FACE-SAVING MEASURE? Jacqueline H. Wilson, M.S. Mentor/Chair John O. Voll, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This thesis assesses the restorative justice aspects of blood money processes used around the world but focuses primarily on Sudan and South Sudan. It examines sulha, judiya (Darfur), galad (eastern Sudan) and other processes using a mixed methods approach and a multi-site ethnography methodology. The paper scrutinizes these processes from foundational agreements, information gathering and truth-telling, through selecting a third party, and examines truces, exile, women’s roles, compensation agreements, closing rituals, and implementation measures. The paper documents contemporary challenges facing these blood money processes such as collective responsibility, global trends like urbanization, widespread killing and retaliation that rises to a feud, situations where killer and killed are unknown to each other, and situations where blood money is paid by outsiders. I identify shortcomings within these processes relative to international legal norms and human values, as well as areas where they are consistent. Using a restorative justice analytical framework, I determine whether blood money processes are restorative and constitute justice, and ask whether these iii traditional mechanisms are sufficiently robust to stop the cycle of violence. -

Israel is a small nation. She occupies a mere 33,000 square miles, approximately one third the size of Great Britain. The nation of Israel contains less than six million inhabitants. Yet she is almost never out of the mainstream news. A word search on ‘Israel’ on the BBC site alone (in September 2002) yields over 9,000 ‘hits’, whereas a search for ‘Iraq’, arguably one of the most important nations in the Middle East for Britain, yields less than 7,000. Searches for Israel’s other nearest neighbours yield approximately 3,000 for ‘Egypt’, 6,000 for ‘Iran’, 2,000 for ‘Jordan’, 2,000 for ‘Kuwait’, 2,000 for Libya, 3,000 for ‘Saudi Arabia’, 2,000 for ‘Syria’ and 5,000 for Turkey. It is noteworthy that with the exception of Jordan and Libya, all these nations are more heavily populated than Israel, some of them several-fold. Yet given that the additional word ‘Palestinians’ yields almost 8,000 ‘hits’, Israel and her Palestinian problem individually far outstrip any of her neighbours with respect to western (or at least British) interest. -

Edward Irving
Edward Irving: Romantic Theology in Crisis Peter Elliott Edward Irving: Romantic theology in crisis Peter Elliott BA, BD, MTh(Hons.) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………… Peter Elliott Abstract In 1822 a young Church of Scotland minister named Edward Irving accepted a post in London and quickly attracted wide upper-class support. He numbered amongst his friends and admirers the political historian Thomas Carlyle and the Romantic poet-philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge. During the next decade, Irving developed views and practices that could be described as millenarian and proto- pentecostal; his interest in prophecy grew and his Christology became unorthodox. He was ejected from his church and hundreds followed him to begin a new group. Within a short period of time, he was relegated to a subordinate position within this group, which later became the Catholic Apostolic Church. He died in 1834 at the age of 42. This paper examines Irving’s underlying Romanticism and the influences on him, including his complex relationships with Carlyle and Coleridge, and then demonstrates how his Romanticism informed all of his key theological positions, often in tension with the more established Rationalism of the time. In ejecting Irving from his pastorate, the Church of Scotland officials were rejecting his idealistic and Romantic view of Christianity. It was this same idealism, with reference to the charismata, that alienated Irving from a senior role in the nascent Catholic Apostolic Church. -
The Emergence of a Catholic Identity and the Need For
THE EMERGENCE OF A CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND THE NEED FOR EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL PROVISION IN NINETEENTH CENTURY BRIGHTON SANDY KENNEDY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION DECEMBER 2013 MY DECLARATION PLUS WORD COUNT I hereby declare that, except where explicit attribution is made, the work presented in this thesis is entirely my own. Word Count: 84,109 ABSTRACT The 1829 Act of Emancipation was designed to return to Catholics the full rights of citizenship which had been denied them for over two hundred years. In practice, Protestant mistrust and Establishment fears of a revival of popery continued unabated. Yet thirty years earlier, in Regency Brighton, the Catholic community although small seemed to have enjoyed an unprecedented degree of tolerance and acceptance. This thesis questions this apparent anomaly and asks whether in the century that followed, Catholics managed to unite across class and nationality divides and establish their own identity, or if they too were subsumed into the culture of the time, subject to the strict social and hierarchical ethos of the Victorian age. It explores the inevitable tension between 'principle' and 'pragmatism' in a town so heavily dependent upon preserving an image of relaxed and welcoming populism. This is a study of the changing demography of Brighton as the Catholic population expanded and schools and churches were built to meet their needs, mirroring the situation in the country as a whole. It explains the responsibilities of Catholics to themselves and to the wider community. It offers an in-depth analysis of educational provision in terms of the structure, administration and curriculum in the schools, as provided both by the growing number of religious orders and lay teachers engaged in the care and education of both the wealthy and the poor. -
Mystery Babylon: Myths & Errors of Interpretation
Mystery Babylon: Myths & Errors of Interpretation By R.A. Coombes Author of: “America, The Babylon: Vols. 1, 2” http://www.americathebabylon.com Publisher of: The Alpha-Omega Report An Online Prophecy News & Studies Magazine http://www.aoreport.com © 2008 by R.A. Coombes Introduction: The subject of “Mystery Babylon” has fascinated many Bible Prophecy students in the past twenty years or so as questions arise as to the identity of Mystery Babylon. There are many different theories proposed as to the identification, all but two are fairly new. This recent upsurge of different theories has provoked many a debate within internet discussion forums whether they be Christian or secular forums. As a scholarly researcher on the subject since 1987, I have developed a vast treasure house of facts, data points if you will, on the subject of Mystery Babylon and all of its facets, not merely the identity issue. What I have noticed in various online discussion forums by posters making assertions on the subject of Mystery Babylon, is that a lot of myths and errors are stated and repeated over and over, again and again, creating tremendous confusion. In an effort to counter this problem, it seemed appropriate to me to present at least some of the factual inaccuracies and set the record straight What follows is an attempt to list some of the more egregious, factual errors on the subject and present the correct those errors for the record. Myth/Error #1. – The name of “Mystery Babylon” Many people refer to the prophetic passages of Revelation chapters 17 and 18 as referring to a “Mystery Babylon” as if “Mystery” was part of the title name. -

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier). -

The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop
Modern Babylon (Rev. 17:5) is the Roman Catholic Church Where did the practices and beliefs of Roman Catholicism come from? In this scholarly classic, first published over eighty years ago, Alexander Hislop reveals that many Roman Catholic teachings did not originate with Christ or the Bible, but were adopted from ancient pagan Babylonian religion, and given Christian names. Although difficult reading, this book accurately provides a fascinating historical in-depth examination of the shocking similarities between the practices of ancient Babylonian religion and those of today's Roman Catholic church. See how a religion that was started by Nimrod and his wife spread to various regions, taking on different names, but keeping the same pagan rituals and trappings. These same rituals embody the Catholic church of today.
