It’s been a month since we played at Hutt Park. A tough away encounter at Wests, a Chatham Cup game in the polar wind tunnel at Wakefield Park against Island Bay and then another night game in freezing conditions against Lower Hutt at Fraser. Well it’s nice to be home and playing during the daytime — on grass! Season two back in Central League has seen an improved start to the campaign. In fact our last home defeat was close to a year ago on the 13th June 2015 against you guessed it — Napier City Rovers. This season has seen a host of yellows and reds being handed out—something like 8 reds in all games we’ve been involved in already! And that seems to be consistent with our Central and Capital Premier colleagues with a host of games being impacted in this way.

It’s been an interesting season and a lot has changed since our first round match against Wainuiomata. On that day at Richard Prouse we never got out of first gear and Wanuiomata “wanted the game” more and their 2-0 victory was seen as a major upset. Well since that lesson on the 20th April we’ve remained unbeaten in the league. Today the team needs no motivation to improve on their first round performance. Wainuiomata sit in 9th spot but as already proven on their day can match it with any side. Playing at Hutt Park however suits our expansive style and we’ve fashioned an impressive record this season. Injuries are also crucial to any side and we’re travelling quite well in that regard. Steve Gulley is close to full fitness and apart from a few niggles we’re fit for the season run-in.

Still at the club from that day and in the first team mix are Jason Tipping, Brandon Tai, Matt Clarke, Damon Fussell and Alistair Yates. Plus the goal scorers that day Steven Gulley and Martin Packer who should be out on the park today which reinforces our club ethos of player loyalty. Nice to see but sadly not common around local footballing circles. Whilst some things remain constant quite a lot has changed since that day. The obvious one is that we’re now back in Central League and sitting comfortably in 5th place.

It’s a warm Hutt Park welcome to Palmerston North Marist. The last time we met was in the Central League playoffs at the end of the 2013 season. Hutt Park was deemed unplayable and our home match was played on the artificial pitch at Memorial Park. Marist were successful in that series with a home win and a draw at Petone. Well that was then and a season on we finally got the job done and have returned to Central League after our playoff series victory against Wanganui Athletic. It’s been a satisfactory start in Central League with 2 wins, 6 points and the side sitting in 5th spot. But with some strong performances there just may have been a few extra points that may have come our way.

After being relegated from Central League last year it hasn’t stopped Diamonds from ‘getting back on the horse’ and pushing for an immediate return to the top flight. There has been some talk around the football scene that the Central League should become a 12 team competition similar to what the Northern League is moving to across its top three divisions For many seasons the top 3 or 4 teams in Capital Premier have been a class above the rest and Wellington United, Stop Out, Waterside and Island Bay would cope admirably in Central League. And you’d also get away from playing against reserve teams in the Capital Premier League! And maybe with two relegation spots it would keep the lower Central League clubs on their toes.
