Kessel • May 5, 1991 • • 1 Introduction On October 2 , 1 990 the artificial separa t ion of the Ge rman state, in place since 1945, officially c ame t o an end . The s y mboli c finale, of course , took place n ear l y a year earlier with the spontaneo11s breaching of the Berlin Wal l . The sudden p ro tests that b rought down the Berlin Wall and the Commu nist governments of Eastern Europe took the West by surprise, as did the speed of German reunification . The reunification of Germany, in addition t o the Soviet wi thdrawal from the rest of Eastern Europe has brought an e nd to the bipolar division of Europe t h at had been i n place si n ce 1945 .
