LEVINE HOLGER ALBRECHT A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Political Science in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2020 Copyright Allen Eric Rotter 2020 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Traditional theories of International Relations have long been used to describe the politics of space. The space security debate itself reflects the inter-paradigm debate of the 1970s and 1980s in which neorealist and neoliberal institutionalist scholars argued over the constitutive character of the anarchic international system. This disagreement is projected onto the space environment and thus contending theoretical assumptions are used to justify opposing propositions concerning the securitization of the domain. Neorealists assume that militarization is an effective method of securitization while neoliberals assume that subscription to international institutions is a more effective method. The extant literature on space security appeals to or extends from military doctrine and political psychology to make prospective space behaviors intelligible. In this dissertation, I apply the theoretical assumptions that undergird traditional schools of thought to the space security environment and operationalize them in a manner conducive to quantitative statistical analysis. I propose that the security status of space can be operationalized by the frequency of non-military payloads placed in orbit every year. This represents the perceived precarity of the domain among civilian and commercial industrial leaders.

    Supplemental Online Resources The following resource list was curated with the assistance of a community member. These resources are provided to assist you in finding supplemental resources to support our curriculum. This document includes lessons for teachers, activities for students and resources for parents. This is not an exhaustive list. Scholastic launched a Learn at Home website with daily lessons that combine videos, stories and prompts for drawing and writing activities. Grade levels include pre-K and kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, grades 3 to 5, and grades 6 and up. Khan Academy, a free online learning resource offering lessons, exercises and quizzes, has daily schedules for organizing at-home learning for students ages 4 to 18 years. On weekdays, Khan Academy is also offering daily livestreams on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to help parents and educators best utilize the website's tools and resources. Crash Course is a YouTube channel offering engaging educational videos suitable for high school students. The channel features a wide range of subjects, from anatomy to world history. ABCmouse.com is offering a free 30-day trial of its comprehensive early learning academy for children aged 2-8 and includes educational games and activities designed by teachers. In response to school closures, dozens of companies that produce educational materials have made their resources available as free subscriptions; you can find links on the Kids Activities website. Links to free K-12 educational resources such as audiobooks, e-books, videos, multimedia materials and more are also available on the Open Culture website. With almost 1,600 World Space Week events in 72 nations, the creativity and scale of events were an incredible feat. Each year we see new and more imaginative ways to celebrate and build on the excitement from the past year’s events.     The Space Arms Race: Global Trends and State Interests Zeev Shapira and Gil Baram Today space is an arena with a significant impact on the security, military, economy, and daily routines of many countries around the world and has attracted many stakeholders. As a result, global interest in the development of weapons for use in space—a process known as the “space arms race”—has increased. The purpose of this article is to present the current approaches to the weaponization of space and the activities of the primary and secondary states in this arena, and to propose a new categorization based on their technological standing. The article discusses the similarities and differences between states active in space and their position regarding its weaponization, in order to help understand the map of national and international interests in space at the current time.
